Newbie collaboration knife?

I am not sure if it will help but I have access to a nice surface grinder.
Flood irrigated grinds down to .00005 per pass. If the billets need it, or the blanks prior to grinding. I'd be more than happy to do that also

I thought it would be nice to list all the members of the "Newbie Collaboration Knife Team". Team members (in no particular order) are:

  • Dustin Golat
  • Joe Mandt
  • Tom Megow
  • Tom Kernan
  • Nick Larson
  • Michael Cantrell
  • Michael Bennett
  • Jared Stenoien
  • Ron Petley
  • Erik Boese
  • Eric Fleming
  • Scott Ickes
  • Matt Doyle
  • Deker
  • Jacob McDonald

I don't know Dekers' full name, or I would have put it on here.

How about a mosaic pin inlayed in each corner to match the mosaic pins on the knives, with matching silver wire inlay in the "comet pattern coming off of the mosaic pins just like it looks on the handles. There would still be plenty of room for everyone's name.

Scott,
I really like this idea. If it's up for vote I'm a yes. I'm ready to do the HT! :D Where the EFF are the blades! What the heck is taking so long? You guys are sooo slow!:D
Matt

That's what I'm sayin'!!!! Guards are already finished up. I hope the tangs are exactly .186" X .637".... I guess I can always file a little off of that if need be :)

But my name is "Deker"! Even my business cards (for my REAL job) just say "Deker"....the next batch will even have a title more appropriate than the current "Senior Principal Engineer".....the new ones will say:

Deker
Swiss Army Knife

You guys are in the queue..I'm working on a commission right now (Sorry guys, $$ comes first) and have another after that, but third in line is the newbie billet!

Forging moves VERY slowly right now because of the heat. I can't go spend 4 or 6 hours working on a billet on a weekend. It's all 2 hour chunks in the early AM. I *MAY* be getting to a friend's place where there's a press soon hough, and if I do I'll see if we can't get the heavy work done there.

The "Master Task List" has been updated.

  • We still need a volunteer to make the decorative cap on the hawk.
  • We still need a volunteer to do the sharpening.
  • We have a change in grinding. Eric Fleming will still be grinding the hunter and camp/bowie. However, he will not be grinding the hawk. I need a volunteer to grind the hawk. Don't be shy! It doesn't matter how much you're already doing, we need someone that has the confidence to grind this very important piece. Come on guys, someone step up!

Attached is the updated task list.

I'm still waiting on contact information from many of you (you know who you are). It's important that we have shipping address information from all of you, so that we can get the knives to and from each maker. Email your contact information to me at scott.ickes@timken.com. Your information will be kept confidential and will only be given to those individuals that need your shipping information to get the pieces to you.

I could probably do the hawk cap at the same time as the bolsters. Don't know if we ever decided on the design, but I may be able to come up with something in NS to match the style of the guards on the other knives to tie them all together...

I sent an email with contact info, too, and I volunteered for sharpening. I see I'm down for etching, which I can do, but I think Deker might have claimed it back in post #168?

It's yours! Congratulations!

Sharpening is yours. Thanks.

Deker is doing the damascus etch. I have you down for putting on the makers marks later in the process.

Yay!!! Just out of curiosity, am I just rough finishing until they go on to the handle fitting and such? And by rough, I mean 220 or 400 grit but fully shaped...

OK...I didn't read your post closely enough, so I've edited this reply. Well, actually completely changed it would be more accurate. We have Mr. Megow doing the finish sanding on the handles, so I think 220 grit is plenty.
