Newbie collaboration knife?

...and we have steel ladies and gentleman!

DSCN0070.JPG

It was a little close on the knife billets because the 'hawk piece is 4 1/2" long (probably too much), but we JUST made it. The camp knife piece is a thick 1/4"x1 1/2"x12", and the hunter is 1/4"x1 1/4"x8" (you get a more "strict" 1/4" Scott ;) ).

I'm not grinding them clean since they'll just be forged again, but I will mark the blade and tang ends so folks know which end is which in the pattern.

I'll try to get to the post office tomorrow to get these shipped.

Hot diggity dog!

What is the proposed completion date for this set? A better question is how long do I have to contemplate this billet like the cutters of the Cullinan diamonds did, before I take a change on messing it up?:D

Tentative completion date is April 2, 2008! (winks) ;) :p

So, I realized today that I meant to grind the edges of these just to ensure no cracks opened up while forging this stuff down. I'm leaving to head out of town on work tomorrow, so I can either ship them as-is tomorrow and you guys can grind and check the edges when they arrive, or they can head out this weekend when I'm back in town.

Let me know,

Priority Mail packages are officially on their way. I ground the edges just enough to make sure there were no cracks that night open up in forging. Some things you guys should note while forging this steel.

  • Forge at a very high heat (near welding temps) to avoid delaminations, etc.
  • Forge thick. We'll need to grind thin to get the best pattern and avoid any small surface cracks from showing up in the final piece.
  • Be nice to the guys grinding. Anneal before you send it out. If you can, heat to critical, quench, and soak in a kiln @1275F for one hour. This will approximate a spheroidized anneal and make life a lot easier for everybody.
  • Normalize 3x
  • For the guys forging blades. The one end of the billet that is ground flat is the tang end. This is very important.

Sorry for holding the start of this project up. Now the rest of you get to make up for my slowness :D

My billet landed today... thanks, Deker! Will be posting pics as work progresses :)

Got mine and I am terrified:eek: Let memake sure that I have it staight. The end with the slightly round corners is the tang and the one with the little tab from band sawing is the tip, right? By the way.......what did you oil this thing with? It smells like a cross between gun oil and bat guano..lol:D

That's the smell of Deker's Secret Sauce! You ought to try riding in a car with him for 6 hours! Sorry, Deker, just kidding!:D Nice job on the billets from what I hear!

Maybe I've got a dull nose, but it just smelled like WD-40 to me :o

Ditto on the WD-40. My customers use a lot of it, and it's a familiar smell to me. My billet looks great. I'm eager to get started. Now I just have to find the time.

The end that was obviously hit with the grinder is the tang. The end that still fully scaled is the blade. I was in a hurry :)

Please see the above comments on WD-40. It was either that or Breakfree, and the Breakfree was in the house, not the shop.

So, did any of you guys get a chance to heat & beat any of the steel I sent out this weekend? Enquiring minds (who haven't been in a shop in 3 weeks and need to live vicariously through you...) want to know!

:D

Not yet.....I as outof town for the weekend in Ohio and will be back up there this weekend and in Texas the nest weekend. I am going to try to whack it a bit this week, but I am still a bit scared:eek:

I haven't had a chance yet either. I'm going to try to squeeze in a vacation day in the shop this week.
