Newbie collaboration knife?

Emailing out the final files to the distro again...check your inbox. Let me know if you need anything else! :)

Wow! Cool pix Deker. Too bad Tess wasn't around to take shot of us twisting that big bear. Looked like two guys trying to raise a ship's anchor.

Your always welcome here bud!

Okay, nevermind. Distro is kicking back mail (freakin' Deker :jerkit:). Anyhow, rough dimensions are as follows.

Hawk: 4 1/8" edge, 5 3/4" from edge to handle hole center, 9 3/4" overall.
Hunter:5 1/2" tip to guard, 10" overall.
Bowie: 10 3/4" tip to guard, 15 3/4" overall.

If any of you need the drawings, send me an email and I will forward them to ya'!!!!!

the trick on the bowie is how wide we want the blade. The billet will probably need to be close to that final width so I have plenty to play with on the choil because of the notch. Unless the design has changed, we are going to have to forge the choil back kind of like on a gaucho knife so that whoever grinds and files the notch will have plenty of material to play with.

That thing looked like it was at least half again as big as anything you would normally try to twist!!!

This is going to be a somewhat bigger hawk than I've forged yet, so I'd rather not be the ONLY one to chime in on how big my slice of the billet needs to be.
Anybody else got good information on it?
My gut is telling me that out of a 1.25" octagon, a 3" long slice would be too little, and a 4" slice would be about right, but maybe a little much.

Am I way off base here?

I've never done a 'hawk, so I can't offer much insight other than to say "better to have too much than not enough". How does 4 1/2" sound?

As for pattern and forging, I will be forging the rest down and re-twisting to try and get a similar rate of twist. It won't be perfect, that much I can guarantee. It seems that about 1 1/4"x8x1/4" or so would be a good start for the hunter and about 1 1/2"x12"x1/4" for the bowie. sound good?

That will work, but since you are probably gonna have MORE than that, considering the size of the billet, don't hesitate to send us a little extra just in case:D And make it a "fat" 1/4 thick for the bowie

Words to live by! ;)

Works for me :D

4 1/2" for the 'hawk then.

Everything will likely be a little oversized side just to be safe. I'm hoping that there's enough for me to make a couple of pieces out of this billet as well. It looks like it'll be pretty nice. I doubled up on the 15n20 so we'll have a very bold pattern.

I've been out of the loop for the last 4 or 5 days. In the last three days, I've driven about 2000 miles and also spent about 24 hours of that time in front of customers. Basically, I've only had time to drive, eat, sleep and consult.

Deker,
Dude, you and your buddies ROCK! That is one monster billet. I think the size you've suggested (1-1/4" x 8" x 1/4") will work great for me to forge the hunter out of.

This project is off and running, and I'm a very happy person. This whole team has been a joy to work with. A great big thanks to everyone!

Tres' Suck! Glad you're home safe again.

The thanks goes to J. Neilson. Without his help on this one it would have taken a lot longer and been multiple billets to get the job done. That, and I don't think I could have possibly twisted 1 1/2" bar by myself... :D

When you get a chance Scott, e-mail me off the forums with names and addresses I have to ship steel to. It may be a week or so before the knife billets get out, but the 'hawk piece just needs to be cut and ground clean (still no small task!) :)

I don't have Joe Mandt's shipping information. He is forging the camp bowie. I'll be emailing you Michael Cantrell's shipping information for the hawk and my shipping information for the hunter.

Joe,
Please contact deker with your shipping information.

I've got everybody's shipping info. I'm going to try and get the billet cut tomorrow (if my chop saw survives it!) and maybe I'll get some of the billet forged down for knife billets as well, we'll see.

I'll take pics of stuff before I ship it out :)

This is getting real interesting now fellers. I'm looking forward to making some sparks with that fancy hawk billet deker :)

...and we have steel ladies and gentleman!

It was a little close on the knife billets because the 'hawk piece is 4 1/2" long (probably too much), but we JUST made it. The camp knife piece is a thick 1/4"x1 1/2"x12", and the hunter is 1/4"x1 1/4"x8" (you get a more "strict" 1/4" Scott ;) ).

I'm not grinding them clean since they'll just be forged again, but I will mark the blade and tang ends so folks know which end is which in the pattern.

I'll try to get to the post office tomorrow to get these shipped.
