Newbie collaboration knife?

Hello Scott,

Hope your Thanksgiving was a great one. I ran home from work Wednesday and hit the road with the wife and kids 100 miles North to the in-laws. Just got back home and now able to take a good look at the blade you sent me. Scott, I must say you’ve done an excellent job. No sugar coating here. The blade looks very well made and the Damascus held up very good as well (Nice job Decker!). I’m really chomping at the bit to get rolling… I’ll at least knock the scale off while waiting for the other knife. I’ll not start the profiling until the Bowie gets here to ensure they are profiled as a matched set. Again Scott, nice job!

Eric

Thanks Eric, you're very kind.

I think it was Matt Pinoy who suggested soaking a forged blade in vinegar to get most of the scale off. It saves on belts. I've never tried it, but it can't hurt to try, considering you have a little time.

The vinegar soak does help. I don't have the time to let blades soak very often but, I do a white vinegar soak for a couple of days when I do my damascus forged finish blades. I cleans off the scale well enough to see the pattern really well in the "flats" of the blade.

I've been meaning to try various soakings to remove scale. I just got a suggestion from Daryl Meier to use a dilute muriatic solution...I may stop at the hardware store on the way home...

I can't wait to see a light etch on this steel. I want to know what our pattern is going to look like! Once you grind on them some Eric, etch them a little if you have some ferric handy and post a pic or two would ya? :)

Hey Decker, I do have some ferric handy and will be sure to etch it a little and post a pic once I've ground it a bit. I am very anxious to see the pattern as well.

Sirs Mandt and Cantrell:
Any news on your forging progress?

Well, it looks like I'm a bit of a slowpoke... but I chiseled the eye tonight :o

That is a BIG OL LUMP OF STEEL. Man. Takes forever to heat up!

Next, gotta drift it, and then the easy part: draw out the spike and blade. :)

So, no spilts when chiseling! Great news! Let me know how it fares during the drifting. The 'hawk is the piece of steel I'm most worried about....

I'm getting the rewiring done in my new shop tomorrow, so the press should be set up in the next week or two and I will be getting the H13 for the dies from Aldo very shortly. I'm not sure that I want to try to hand hammer the tang on this thing. I also going to have some beveling dies made so I will be able to give the billet a nice gentle squeeze instead of random shots with the 2kg Peddinghaus. A little more precision might be in order, ya know?:D

I wanna be in on it!

We can get you in on this with no problem. Some of us are doubling up on tasks. What I need from you is an email. My email address is scott.ickes@timken.com.

In the email I need the following information.
  • Contact information, such as full name, shipping address and phone number.
  • A list of tasks that you enjoy doing.
  • A list of tasks that you are most proficient at.

Please check out the Master Task list on Post 204 on page 11 of this thread. That may help you figure out what we can have you do.

Welcome aboard!

If you'd like to handle the etching of names/logos, I'd be happy to give it to you :)

This might possibly involve the etching of the name plates on the top of the presentation box, as well as the knives and hawk. I'm not sure we've decided on who would do the etching/engraving of those on the presentation box.

Mr. Carter,
How are your etching/engraving skills?

Never done engraving, However I'd be happy to do any etching on whatever needs it, I can do abrasive, or chemical etching. including decorative fine line etching, I'd be happy to do the nameplates.

While waiting on the bowie, I decided to etch a side of the hunter. Pattern looks great Decker!

It's looking really nice! Great pattern deker.

Thanks for the photo Mr. Fleming! I love the way a forged damascus blade pattern distorts towards the tip.
