Newbie collaboration knife?

I'd rather leave them a little soft and do the fitment post HT if that is cool with Matt Doyle. Like you said, Eric, better to file and fit at the same time. I was just wondering if that was going to be cool with the group if I took off some of that ricasso. Not too much mind you :D

You have a pretty decent amount to work with on the bowie. Maybe as much as 3/8 measuring from the "longer" shoulder:D I say make the ricasso a bit shorter than its width.

I'm still doing the ricasso after the HT right? I have a set of diamond files so it doesn't matter much to me, just seems like it'd be easier for the ht'er. It's looking good guys :) btw I have a new email address, JStenoien at gmail.com

The only choil filework I have ever done was before heat treat, but it was nowhere near as complicated. Just three little half round file cuts. You are a glutton for punishment, sir!!! LOL. Maybe we should ask someone who does a lot of filework of this type like Tim Hancock when he does it.

Hello Jared, according to the master task list, the knives go to you next for the Spanish choil work. After that it goes to Matt Doyle for HT. You should get these knives early next week. I'm sending you a PM to verify your address.

Unfortunately I'm just starting a new job, so I won't be able to get to it as quickly as I'd like, but I'll get on it asap.

Guys
For my purposes, it doesn't really matter to me how you want to do the shoulders. The blade will be HT'd in my Evenheat and then queched in
Parks #50. I would think that the shoulders should be done PRE HT to avoid any possible discoloration issues with the etch, but it's really up to you guys. I'm just doing the HT so it really is not going to have any real bearing on my work, but if you blue the shoulders after HT to file them down, you will see it in the etch.

There shouldn't be any discoloration from drawing the steel back. The only time I've had issues was when the whole thing wasn't quenched. The martensite formation changes how the steel etches, but drawing it back doesn't seem to really mess with it.

I wondered about that after I wrote it, but couldn't get away from the yardwork to get back to my pc. Thanks for the clarification.
Matt

Knives sent today via UPS to Jared Stenoien. Estimated arrival date is Wednesday 8/20.

You mean this project is still going!!!
Some photos of the work at each stage would be a good idea.
At this rate some of the newbies will be mastersmiths before the knives are done:D

Just yankin' your chains....now get to work.

Hey now, just because I finesse my blades into shape instead of beating them into submission.... :D

Another month passes like the sands of the hourglass...so are the days of our lives. Any new news?

An update. The hawk should be shipped by Friday, October 3rd to Mr. Hampton for grinding. I should have some pictures of it to post later this week.
