Newbie collaboration knife?

Email recieved!:D I'm taking my wife out tonight, but I'll reply ASAP - tonight if possible, but might be tomorrow (date nights sometimes just happen like that:cool: )...

My brother is arriving in town tonight from Ohio. I'll be offline all night myself. No rush, as this will take a while to get through it all.

Did I miss anyone with the email that I sent about strength and weaknesses? I think I have them all, but not sure.

Ickie

The collaboration knife that our friends made is spectacular. We may not be able to produce a knife of that quality, but, we might be able to take more time than they did to finish it :D !

hey, I resemble the remark :D
the trouble with it taking so long is, I can do better now than I did then  :D

I can't play .. bummer :( :) good to see this happen like said the guys will
do better while doing this together..
it's like working out in a gym with others, you work harder, sweat more, and hold your stomach in longer :D

I'm not sure if a word document can be put on here, but I'll try. We have a good cross section of skills in our group. I'm going to list some of the things I pulled out of our little self surveys that we just went through. For those of you that are watching, but not one of our makers, we had a list of skills that we each rated ourselves on. Some of us have been doing this a little longer and have a broad range of skills developing, while some of us are newer to this, but all in all, each of us brings something to the table. About the only things that we won't be able to do are Scrimshawing and Engraving.

Some neat little things that I've pulled out so far:
  • We have 8 damascus makers in our little group of 15. Not bad for newbies.
  • We have two in our group that are exceptional carpenters and would be able to make a mean presentation case.
  • We split about 50/50 between stock removal and forging.
  • Of the 23 categories that we rated ourselves in, we had someone rating themselves at 8 or higher in 18 of those categories.
  • We have a maker of mokume in our group.
  • We're a little weak in the leather work category. Hmmmmmmm....I guess we'll need to practice on that one!
  • We suck at Scrimshaw and Engraving. <<<To be expected this early in a knifemakers journey.
  • The most used steels by our groups are O1 and damascus.
  • If you lump all simple carbon steels together (1075, 1080, 1084, and 1095 we use a lot of those.
  • We aren't the best heat treaters around yet. I think we need to have the heat treating done by the most capable in our group for whichever steel we choose!
  • We have two people capable of doing file work.
  • We're not much of a stainless group. A couple of us, but not many.

I'm thinking we should consider O1 or damascus for the blade material. I kind of like the idea of damascus to show case one of the pattern welders in our group.

We're also just slightly stronger in the forged area, as compared to the stock removal area, but not by much.

Thoughts? Either comment here, or email the group. I'll also send the chart out to all of you in a blanket email.

Scottickes: See my email.
Although I rated myself low I may still be able to help in the leather department, as I am very comfortable working with leather. I am currently working on a knife of my own right now and will soon be coming to the sheath making part of it, and I could submit a picture of my sheath when it is done for the groups review.

And at the very least if I do make a sheath for the project knife and it isn't quite what you all are looking for, you can always have the other guy make one, and my feelings wouldn't be hurt at all.

As I mentioned in my reply to your email, the leather work is way out in the future. Some of us will definitely improve in your sheath making between now and then. Myself, personally, I'll be making probably 50 sheaths in the next year, so I expect I'll be improving dramatically myself. But I won't be the only one. If you're interested in the leather work, you've got plenty of time to hone your skills. The better makers on here took 4 years to finish there collaboration knife, so I'd say we have plenty of time.

Hey guys, this is pretty cool. Can't wait to see what you all come up with. My puter's on the fritz but I'll be peeking in on this again next time I get a chance (I'm at the library now :jerkit:)

Thanks. I can't wait to see what we come up with myself. It's going to be an interesting and fun journey.

I was wondering what happened to you James! I thought I was gonna have to put out an ATL (attempt to locate) on you. Glad to hear it's just a computer problem and not something worse!

I wish I could help out with this collaboration, but I don't think anyone could count on me to hold up my end with the very limited time I get in the shop:grumpy: Perhaps another time. I know that you will all do very well with this project! -Matt-

Hey Scott:
I have been looking at the line up here and I think I am on the low side of the skill curve. But I did make furniture for a living so I might be better in the box making crew, seemed like there was less people in this area anyways.
I like the 2 knife idea the smaller one could be the Damascus.
Good on Ya this is looking like it is going to be one mighty fine project.

Don't fret Mr. Greaseman. There has been talk among us of making this an annual thing. Starting a new collaboration each year for the newest of the newbies among us. I'm thinking that after being on the newbie team for three years, a person can drop out and be an advisor (if they wish) for two years. So, this really is the first newbie collaboration knife ((2007) version.

You might get your chance afterall.

Don't count yourself out on the knife part of this yet. I'm hoping that each of us does something on the knife, however small or great that contribution may be. One of the purposes of this is to help newbies grow and learn. We want you to be a part of the knife work, no matter how limited your experiences are at this point. Remember, this knife will take quite some time to complete, and a year or two from now you'll have skills that you don't currently have.

For those that are watching this thread, don't worry about the silence. We're throwing ideas back and forth in emails between us. Stay tuned.

count me in if it isnt too late. maybe we can get a couple of groups and do a contest at the same time. put me down for whatever position you want. except making a leather sheath. i can make one with kydex tho.

Kerry and Mr. McDonald,
You're both in. Welcome to the group. I'll be forwarding you both our strengths and weaknesses self survey, via email.

As far as who is a newbie and who isn't a newbie. I feel that if a person thinks of themselves as a newbie, then they are a newbie. I myself began tinkering with knifemaking back in 1989. I never made more than a dozen knives in any one year, until this past year. I've been serious for about a year now. To me, I'm still a newbie.
