I made an order from the Livesay internet site on April 15, 2005. I haven't heard anything about it, but the money was evidently accepted via paypal. I have emailed a couple of times and recieved no response. I noticed recently that the site has not been updated since January. Is this normal? Anyone do business with him? Does shipping take a long time? Did I get taken?

Thanks,

Seikan1

A search of this forum will reveal that if you ever get your knife consider yourself lucky. Although there are reports that he's been doing better lately.

I guess I should have done my homework first. I just read several posts that go back over several months. I guess I will be lucky if I hear from him. OH well, I guess I had best look elsewhere for similar products.

I ordered a walking stick from him in February and got it in a week or so. Guess he has some things in stock. YMMV.

I recived A 82nd airborne from him it took 10 weeks I got it last month april 1-05 then I saw him at the gun show in tulsa and got a woo from him at the show april 3-05.
he said that some one had hacked his computer and crashed it and he is way be hind on orders and he is trying to get out the military orders first, for all the service men in iraq that have ordered from him.
he said he had around 290 knife orders from active duty military plus 200 civilain orders.
It sounded to me like he was busting his butt to get out the orders but he said he is a one man knife maker and has no help in his shop.

If you ordered on April 15, I would file your PayPal complaint NOW before 30 days expire.

He will have to provide you a tracking number or else PayPal will refund your money

Hi there
had similar problems last year, 'in stock' items took weeks to appear. Had to resort to slagging him off on every knife forum I could find. got immediate response and the knives magically arrived. The up side was that I found a whole bunch of really nice people who loved knives as much as me.

I notice that his PayPal shopping cart is down as well. I tried a few times over the past couple of weeks to place an order, and I kept getting an error message: "This recipient is currently unable to receive money." I wanted to order a fighting cane and a hiking stick, though after looking over the complaints about the guy, I'm not so sure now. But since I can't reach him, the question of whether or not to take the chance is academic.

According to a May 3rd post on his forum by someone who claims to have spoken to him, he is planning to get a new email address and post it on his forum. It hasn't happened yet, though.

By the way, does any other retailer sell Newt Livesay canes or sticks? I tried Google and didn't find anything, except for a package deal where you get a Livesay cane with an expensive set of videos. I might have missed something, though.

All the Best,
Charles

This guy has had the most extraordinary string of bad luck. I predict that next we will be hearing about how a meteor smashed into his shop - destroying all his equipment and causing him to stagger around in a daze, cashing checks and billing credit cards but not delivering knives.

Shop elsewhere, not worth the headache, I speak from experience

Amen, asked to be put on the RTAK list in 2002, still waiting for him to tell me when it will be started.

What is this trend? Well known names in knifemaking who rip people off and get away with it forever. I ordered a Ti Tiger like 5 years ago and got it in a couple days. I must've gotten my order in before all the problems started. It's too bad. I respect makers like RW Clark. He's so busy with filling orders that he pulled his website so people aren't tempted to place orders, etc. Wish more would respect buyers in the same way.

I had problems with him of the same type, long delays, date after date missed, no communication unless you kept forcing the issue. He makes great working large bush knives in well matched steel, one of the very few who does so and incredible prices, the AK looks excellent but I would never deal with him again.

I'm gonna bump this back up to try to get a response on a few ?'s of my own.

ARE there any other people who sell his sticks? I've emailed him regarding a 30" WA-1, a 36" WA-1 and a Grey Ghost. Almost 2 weeks and no response. I, also, have experienced the PayPal "This recipient is currently unable to receive money."

It makes me a little wary, what, with all the horror stories, but for the most part, they seem to be knife related, not stick.

If there is no other sources, does anybody know Newt personally or know where he lives? I'd REALLY like a couple of the sticks. Maybe somebody who know him could get a supply of sticks and sell them?? Just a thought

From what I hear, you might want to try going to a local feed store and asking for a "pig cane."

If you want a good cane, check out Carving Magazine at your local newsstand, or go onto their website, www.carvingmagazine.com, they should have a state by state list of woodcarver groups, you can call up one and find out who does sticks, or get some leads. You would be surprised at how many local woodcarvers there are in your own back yard. Some use crap wood, others use oak, hickory, maple etc. I use mine for special events, I have a crapper in the back of my truck for hiking, but all of my sticks from other makers can be used defensively. You can get sticks ornately carved, or just a simple stick with a lanyard, or just a really nice shaped plain stick.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL WOODCARVERS! :)

If you're near Baltimore, Harrisburg or DC, I know a guy who does very good work (not me, I stink, but I'm getting better ;) ).

Best of all, he'll actually give you what you commission after you pay him ;) .

Supposedly he is having computer problems and is going to post a message on his ezboard forum when he gets back online, according to a second-hand report a couple weeks ago. You can check his forum here: http://p222.ezboard.com/blivesayknives

His old contact info is posted here, for what it's worth: http://newtlivesay.com/newt_livesay_contactpage.htm

It would be nice if someone with a good reputation would act as a middleman. Then we could have the famous quality without the infamous customer service. (Not that I have any direct experience buying from Livesay, but he seems to have earned a certain reputation.)

All the Best,
Charles
