Hi,

A few years back I purchased a couple of knives from Newt Livesay.

I sent the money and then waited months......

I remember on this forum at the time (probably buried in some archive somewhere now) there was a lot of negative comment on people waiting for knives, knives never showing up etc etc.

I communicated for a long time with Newts daughter and eventually got my knives. (Which were awesome!)

Newt stopped trading and his website dissappeared.

I now notice that his website is back so presumably he is trading again.

Now I do like his knives, but am very wary after my last experience.

Has anyone purchased a knife from Newt Livesay recently? Is the customer service working ok ? Is he reliable now ?

With so many reputable and reliable makers out there why take a chance with someone who has proven to be unreliable in the past?

In one word - NO.

Joda is a really sweet gal saddled with an impossible problem.

There are some exceptional makers in the same price point who have proven to be reliable.

I got screwed Sept. 2009 when I sent money for one of his folders. He has my money and I have no knife.

That's right. He started up again last year with a nice-looking new folder. Some guys sent in money for folders he'd already made and were happy with them, so others sent in money for him to make more folders and it looks like he never got around to it.

Man is a con artist who believes his own con. Beware of his helpers who "try to make it right."

Newt called me yesterday about the folder I ordered in Sept. I appreciated him contacting me and will post here when I recieve the knife.

I had an order with him that took months to get right, but it did get right. Good value, but the experience would make me think twice though.

December 2009 I emailed Newt about the LAK8 machetes he advertised on his website. He told me that they would be ready soon and he would let me know when, that was December. I emailed him again early Feburary, and again he said they would be ready soon. I have not heard anything since and I am losing faith that I ever will. IMO its better to stick with known reputable company than gamble on a sketchy unstable one.

thats what ya call "hitting the nail on the head".

like triton says there are wayyy too many 110% honest 'smiths who do great work and will go out of thier way to please you to take a chance on what could well be a "hit or miss" kinda deal.

i have owned a few of newts knives myself (i still have a woo) and while they offer pretty good ergos/designs/etc and were priced pretty good if i wanted another i would get it on the secondary market vs buying from newt, and would also consider a few "what if's" like "what if i need to send the thing back for repair/etc, am i confident it would be repaired and sent back in a timely manner, or sent back at all"??.

just a few thoughts FWIW.

He still has the almost $400 I sent him years ago...and I have no knife. DO NOT deal with this guy!

Never received the folder. I called him two weeks ago and did not get a return call. I'm done here. It baffles me how makers stay in business who operate this way.
Scott

How do these guys stay in business? I think the saying is..."one's born every minute."

a lotta folks just arent interested enough to do research on purchases like knives/etc and see an ad in guns & ammo or such and order not knowing its a hit or miss deal, newt used to do a lotta advertising in gun and knife mags, i dont read a lot of 'em myself anymore so i dont know if thats still the case or not.

What does this mean for people who have Livesay knives?

Can't sell 'em, nobody will pay a fair price for 'em, if ya got one should you consider yourself lucky or are you a sc*mb*g for ownin' one.

Is it a good knife with a bad maker or should it be destroyed to keep from propagatin' a myth that leads you to believe you own a piece of history and a quality knife?

I do own one and it is used as a LD SD and is EDC'd. :) (too many acronyms?)
