Next in line...another Persian!

Pat,

Me and mine are all well. Been sidtracked for far too long finding, buying, and fixing up, and fully furnishing a house here in Florida for my inlaws. Pretty much de-railed knifemaking completely but that "project" is thanfully pretty much done. Got them a great place a mile and a half from our house in a retirement community and they're enjoying the FL winter so everyone's happy and well. Totally a worthwhile investment of my time but content to be getting back into the shop.

I see you've been doing some GREAT stuff in my absence ! Keep up the great work buddy.

Really enjoying the WIP too. Thanks for taking the time to share

Patrice Lemée; And did some prototyping with cheap wood. Much quicker than steel to get a better idea of what works and what doesn't. This is very rough. A you can see the pommel will probably be made of a different material than the handle. And that it will be...say it with me...a take down. :D [IMG said:

Late to the party.

There is such a thing as "Ivory Micarta". You can grind, sand, file, drill, and shape it like the plastic it is, then polish it to achieve the same aged white look as ivory. I've never used it, but it might be an option for you.

Thanks, it could be an option I guess but on this one I will do a lot and would like to use something a little more natural.

A little progress.

Did some more cleaning up of the fuller. I now have pretty much have it to the size it's gonna be so I can start work on drawing something to carve in there.

Did a little more shaping of the mock-up handle/guard/pommel. I already see things that work and thing that don't. But in general, I am happy with where it's going.

Thanks for looking.

Looks good Patrice. Like the new avatar also. Pretty excited to watch this one come together, i always wanted to make a persian...someday it will make it to my plate.

Thanks Mike, I am glad you like it.

About the Avatar, I wanted to show my graying hair, make me look more distinguished. ;) On a serious note, I wish more people would put pics of their ugly mug as their avatar. I see that more on other forums and it makes things more personal I think.

Not sure yet Phil. I looked a little into bone, maybe giraffe but I still have some research to do. I'll probably end up going with some stabilized moose antler scales or some lighter wood. I'd really like to try bone/ivory though. We'll see.

I am thinking of using clay on the fuller to make it a tad softer and easier to do the post heat treat cleaning/engraving.
Good idea or not?

Don't see where it would hurt. you would have hardened edges around it for stability...might get a cool hamon also.

Patrice,
That is looking really cool. I know it's just a mock up, but the handle looks nice too. Can't wait to see what is next.

My dad has a rotozip type tool. He loves that thing. He uses it for many different types of work. When he needs a dremel type tool, he takes off the front of the rotozip and attaches a flex shaft to it. He said that it works great. Not sure how it would work for "carving" steel, but if it would, might be less expensive than the foredom and have the ability to use it as different types of tools at the same time. There are a couple of different brands of the same type of tool as well. No idea how big the motor is. Hope this helps,
Rob

Yeah, what railrider said. You can get a flex shaft attachment specifically for your dremel if the bulk & overall shape is uncomfortable for extended usage.

Oh, and I really like where this knife design is going, especially the fuller on the blade. It looks awesome so far.

Dagger of the 1001 Nights!

After much R&D this is where it's going.
Sounds good at least, now making the knife fit that is another thing. :o

Keep it or good for the trash? ;)

PS: Tried the Dremel flex shafts and never had any success. Overheats a lot and breaks down fast.

Well Crapola! Sorry but this project might be have to be put on ice for a while. :( Doing more work on the engraving I realize (painfully) that I need better magnification. The Magnifying Light or/and Visor is just not cutting it. But an engraving microscope is a good chunk of change. Especially since I am also seriously contemplating a surface grinder. Will it ever end. *sigh*

I got a few inquiries about the progress on this one so I just wanted to let you know that this is officially on hold until I can get a microscope to do the engraving. :(

Nobody would have one for sale would they? :(

I'm still not sure why you think you need a microscope. I get that you're doing a lot of fine (small) stars, but do you really need microscopic perfection? Perhaps you just need to think of a different way to achieve the same result.
