Having just had the chance to see @Non.Nisi.Te ’s skinner, I’m going to offer some thoughts, unsolicited and I’ll wager wholly unappreciated.

It’s a cute little knife. The danger is in assuming the simple look means it’s simple to make.

It isn’t.

At least, not the way Nate and crew do it.

For that knife to be done properly, it needs to be hand ground. In that shop, anyway. It’s not like the side project that the original skinners were, as AIM at that time was a machine shop, doing real work, and the knife stuff was a side gig.

This is me talking out my ass, but my ass is pretty well educated by knifemaker ass standards, and I’ll wager that a reasonable price for something akin to the original skinner should be in the $700 range, given today’s market.

Now, having dropped this stinking turd right here, I’ll leave you to talk amongst yourselves.

Mr G, a rare few of those early OG Skinners came with handmade leather pouches by Jo! I had seen one but maybe there were just a few out in the wild. There were a couple of Skinners at the last Gathering when you we're also there, both of which were offered as prizes, one ending up with N.N.T and the other changing hands at below 1K, granted that it had wood scales (they both did) but I think that Nathan had put a value of 500 on them. Depending on the steel and the options, I agree with you that the new Skinner will be in the same range as the DEK3, i.e, ~ 450 to 750 (heavy with options), but maybe 400 (for basic) if Nathan convinces himself, Family and the Crew again that Ramen is both nutritious and healthy :)

Oh, the Kukri? 1K+

Mat, the DEK3 doesn’t require any hand grinding, outside of basic tool mark removal. The skinners are hollow ground, and it’s a very thin hollow grind. There’s no way to accelerate that process, or automate it outside of buying a hollow grinding machine, which likely still won’t work because of the temperature sensitivity issues with the alloys used. That means monkey meat powered grinding, which means time, and increased use of obscenely expensive belts. It’s not a fair comparison, and why I was pointing out that despite it appearing similar or ‘simple’, it isn’t, and those parallels can’t really be drawn.

I stand by my number - once you take into account the additional variables, there’s no way it can be done under $700 without CPK losing their asses in the venture.

Can we get some kind of offset or handicap for the Kuk, or maybe an electoral voting n type system 😬? I mean 1 to 1 popular vote overall the Skinner will probably come out ahead. Or maybe the Skinner has to win by 15 votes? 🙈

It’s like asking if someone would want to buy an EDC or a Behemother. Just two totally different animals and universally the smaller one is more appealing and less $$$.

C’Mon KUKRI LOL

Untill you post EDC and Behemother on the Exchange ... see which one sells first.
