Next Project... a take down.

Thanks, Patrice. I did some filing today with round files to shape the inside of the channel.

Next step will be to get the two sides symmetrical, and then start shaping them.

Still can't help but be amazed how much you do with such little machinery. You must have incredible patience for this sort of thing!

Can't wait to see the end results

After reshaping the guard it was apparent that the vasticola burl handle piece was not long enough. I toyed with the idea of putting spacers on both sides, perhaps even brass guards or ivory pieces. That just seems unsuitable. So I made another course change.

Getting a little ahead of myself. I haven't finished shaping the guard yet... but the pieces are starting to fit together.

Today I did some first pass carving on the handle using the dremel with a conical diamond burr wheel. The remainder of the shaping will be done with needle files and sandpaper.

Keep looking Patrice. I'm sure you'll see it in there eventually. It helps to have training in abstract art! :)

I spent a little time today with a needle file cleaning up the lines and curves and removing some of the remaining gouges. I will say, this stuff carves almost like chalk... fairly simple to adjust the shape with needle files.

I'm basically done shaping the handle now, and am down to finer cleanup exercises. Most of what's left to be done will be done with sandpaper. I ran over most of it using 50 grit emery cloth (outside, in the wind, for those checking to see if I practice what I preach), just to work out the remaining rough spots. I also rubbed it with a little mineral out to clean away the chalky dust so I could see the surface more clearly.

The handle is a close-up of Seagull feathers if I am not mistaken. I luv it! :D :D

Just in case, you know I am just teasing right? It's looking great.

That looks very clean. I am looking forward to seeing it put together.

I think it always helps to put the pieces together and see where work is needed. Last night I spent a little time refining the handle to fit the guard better. Tonight I hope to spend some time pulling the whole thing together. Right away I can see that I need to remove some from the top. I've also had an idea or two about carrying the lines from the handle forward into the guard and through the yet to be started pommel.

That's starting to come together very nicely, Greg. I agree with you that you need to remove a little bit from the top of the hande in the front. I also think it would add to the knife if you were to extend the handle lines through the guard and pommel (maybe just the pommel), but it works as-is as well.

Today I ground the guard and the handle to better flow with the line from the blade. It's still not perfect, but I was hesitant to go too far at this time. I'll do the rest with files and sandpaper to make sure I don't ruin it. I'm thinking I want to remove the hump back from the handle.

Yesterday I started carving the front of the D-guard to carry the lines of the handle forward. It's still in a very ugly, very rough state, and I'm not yet certain this idea will work as well as I'd hoped. But, there are some aspects of this I like and find compelling, so I will continue. I started by scribing the line with the Dremel and am finishing the work with needle files.
