just havin a little fun with ya, Count!:foot:
This knife was initially designed for a specific clientele, many of whom would be wearing gloves while carrying and/or using the knife. The idea was that the texture would provide added traction that wearing gloves often compromises.
The handle is also oversized a bit, particularly the the knuckle zone, in order to accommodate the extra real estate that gloves require.
The texture at the butt of the handle is there to provide traction for the heel of the hand when pushing the point into stuff, ie; scraping out mortar between bricks or something that would require leverage for a pushing motion out at the tip. In a reverse grip, the thumb rests on the texture and accomplishes pretty much the same thing, (only in reverse) and also gives added traction when stabbing the knife into stuff.
The texture behind the guard is intended to provide a little extra safety through both the indexing consideration and traction. The guard is very small on this knife and the thinking is the the texture wouldn't get in the way so why not try it? It's a theory that I'm looking forward to testing.
Now that the original client for this pattern is no longer pursuing production, I have some ideas on how to make the texturing work without causing unnecessary irritation in a bare hand. I generally hate wearing gloves, so I'm gonna make it work.
