Nice EDC for $500 ?

Judging by your criteria I'd agree with the recommendations for CRK (Seb 25, Umnum) or Hinderer (xm18) or another midtech type knife (Vecp, L'officer, etc.)

There are also lots of custom folders available at around that price point, especially if you check the exchange often and wait to pounce on a good deal.

I'd go for whatever you like the design of; something that you *really* want. Don't just get a knife because you have $500 to spend, get something that you truly desire. I would personally get a Strider SMF/SNG with CC grips.

based on what you are looking for, I would recommend the crk zaan. Great knife and it will last a lifetime!

I second the Field Grade Bodega, very nice flipper and a very capable knife. The Sebenza is probably the most popular for that price range and for valid reasons it seems to beat out most knives in its levels. However a Sebenza has never seemed too tactical to me like a Mircotech is. A Sebenza to me gives off the gentleman vibe with a hint of tactical. The Umnumzan is also a great choice too.

If you are ready to spend 500 bucks on a knife, you had better have a specific idead as to what you want, or need.

man that's alot of money on a knife. that's 5 steakhouse dinners.

Haha true. But $500 is the cap. I'm happy to spend less as long as the knife fits the bill. I just haven't bought a new knife in a while and I wanted a top shelf (or near top shelf) blade.

I've been thrilled with my 0550 and Yo2. And they were both faaaar less than $500. But I work them hard and I'd like to add a new EDC knife to my gear.

That's pretty subjective, friend. Compared to a Spyderco Tenacious $500 is a lot, but compared to a $20,000 Michael Walker...

At $500, I'd look into a Dozier or maybe something from John W. Smith. You can get something kickass from Alan Davis for five hundred bones.

I'd get a sebenza 21. I've had the big 3 that are being talked about. Xm, sng, and sebenza.
The sebenza is the only one I kept. (I sold the others to buy more CRK) The Hinderer was cool but the detent sucked and I didn't love the flipper.
Or you could get a spyderco military.

Which do u prefer?

Much prefer the strider. One thing I really dislike about the sebenza is the thumb stud. I am lost carry SMF and SnGs exclusively now. The cc version carries great and they just work for me. Best warranty, excellent f&f and very easy to resell for top dollar pretty much make the Strider folders a no brainer.

IMO the (pick your flavor) Sebenza still is the overall best knife out there. The one aspect it lacks is any quick deployment. But there are lots of knives that are designed for that purpose. If your #1 itch is very high quality F&F a CRK is likely the best choice. If you're willing to sacrifice some of that for other design aspects you could go with a metric crap ton of other choices. The closer you come to CRKs F&F the more you spend up to the thousands. Personally that's why I own more than a few knives! My folders that get by far the most carry time are SnGs and Lg Sebenzas. There are different reasons why one or the other could be better for you. I'd imagine you'd really dig either. However if what you want is a HIGH quality knife and you've never owned a CRK you owe it to yourself to start with the company that wins the awards year after year!

Could definitely go in many different directions here. From what it sounds like you are looking for a nice knife but don't have your heart set on anything specific. With that in mind I wouldn't shell out that much money unless you had a plan of specific things you are pursuing. Everybody has their own price points, but as I'm personally starting to pursue knives in this range and higher in price I'm approaching it with a plan of specific knives I want, instead of setting a budget and then seeing what fits into that box. I'm not saying you shouldn't take the approach you are, I just believe that you'll be happier and end up with knives you will really appreciate instead of being out some money exploring different models to find out you don't like them. Doing some research goes a long way and even asking your question is getting you headed in the right direction though. Good luck and let us know what you end up with!

And of course I'll add in my 2 cents. :) For the range you're looking at I'd strongly consider a Sebenza 25 or a Hinderer.

I'm pretty happy with my Sebenza 25
Mild quirk is that it's off center
But boy is it just pleasant to own. Also love the way the titanium wears
