Nick Wheeler Prototype Fighter. "Oh YEA "......

One of the fellas was a bit concerned about some of the handles being dropped/canted differently than some of the others. After looking at some of my photos, I can see what he was seeing, but it's just odd angles and poor photography combined.... As these are all as close to identical as I know how to make.

Which means they are about as close to identical as just about anyone knows how to make. Great set! LOVING the look of my walnut - very rich grain in that piece. And I'll definitely have to get some of that green G10 on a knife - man, does it ever make the handle contours POP!

Now what happened to the mahogany one?

That's Peter's - the one he's still "tweaking" [rubbing for hours with powdered baby unicorn fur to make a Fogg-worthy hamon]. :p

very impressive final flavors!

I am also very surprised how nice that green G10 looks finished!! I originally thought that may not have been the greatest choice but boy I was wrong!

mind you this is from a guy that played it safe with black G10....but i'm def not unhappy with my choice :)

thanks Nick and Joe!

I'd just like to echo everyone else's comments. I've been an admirer of your work and work-ethic since getting the opportunity to hang out with you a few years back. I appreciate your ability to take on a project like this - multiples of the same design - and give every piece the same focus and attention to detail that you would give a one-off custom. These knives are very cool, and unmistakably WHEELERs.
... and I am surprised to say it, but I think the green G-10 is my favorite.

The Blackwood handle is beyond beyond... I can hardly wait to get 'er in my hands! :p This whole process has been, thus far, the most fun I've had as a knife nut... thanks Joe for getting this project going design and all:thumbup: and Nick you have been The Dude!

Thank you so much guys!!! :)

What's funny about this project for me, is that usually when you do the same thing several times over, you get tired of seeing it. I think having ADD makes it a little more extreme for me than a "normal" brain... But I am totally in love with Joe's design. Not only am I not sick of it, I'm excited to get to do some more variations of it! (like an ivory and damascus version for one of our local friends!) :D

I want to thank everyone for their patience as well. I think some are shocked enough that "Wheeler actually made that many knives" to not notice it took me three weeks longer than I had THOUGHT it would. But factoring in some of my heat-treat issues and losing a week due to poor supply management (63% my fault, 174% the fault of a supplier that sent me the wrong fasteners ;) ) and the overall time spent on these was fairly close to my original plan. But I am sorry it was not right on the dot.

Speaking of suppliers (that sent me the right stuff).... this project could NOT HAVE HAPPENED without my friends the Bybees http://www.alphaknifesupply.com
My friend Mark Farley at Burl Source http://www.burlsource.us/servlet/the-Blocks--dsh--Stabilized-Wood/Categories
And my friends the Mickleys at http://www.usaknifemaker.com/

Didn't intend for that to sound like an acceptance speech :o  :) Just wanted to thank some of the folks that help me do what I do.

Thanks everyone!!! :)

+1 Well said, Cal !!!

This has been so much fun I'm genuinely sorry to see the process drawing to a close. BTW, your blackwood-handled version is way "beyond beyond." Sleek, Sleek, Sleek

Didn't intend for that to sound like an acceptance speech. ... Thanks everyone!!! :)

You are definitely DUE to be taking some bows, Nick. What an amazing display of talent! THANK YOU!

...and please don't stop with the pics--sounds like the fireworks are just beginning to heat up. ;)

Cool Will thanks ... we'll all have to get together at the OK Coral for the Motha of all knife fights. Joe can't be in it.... he's too scary!;)

Guys I'm the one that's scared:)

Nick why did ya say anything about being late no one noticed :)

As for getting it done I never had a doubt I could tell from the start you where committed and a committed man is dangerous :)

Now hurry up and send my knife the season is upon us and I don't wanna beat up the proto :)

Again thank you all so much for your enthusiasm everyone was so great

Awesome thread! I'll take #63.

Thanks for the contest!!!

Great blades, bro. Incredible variety and such similarity - VERY cool! Joey's thoughts on fighter design is intriguing...

...and for crying out loud, stop blow-drying your dogs hair!!!!

BRAVO!! I truly appreciate your work and the time you take to post all the pictures, great stuff, thanks!

Sam always good to see you here

I thought you would like these

Heck, had to go looking on the SECOND page for this one. Just had to put her back into place. Great thread one again. Learn something new every time Nick does a WIP.

Tell me about it.. This video was a revelation. The interaction of geometry and heat is so evident here that as a lesson it will inform all my future attempts to make hamons.

been real busy recently so I haven't posted in awhile......but I just want to say that this has been a great project from the word Go !

Joe has been coming up with some great ideas, and Nick's execution of the blades and all the various handle materials has been stellar

The WIP updates have also been a source of excellent information :D

while I can't wait to get my hands on the knife, I think it would be cool to see a "final group shot" of all the knives before they go out, assuming that is in some way feasible...
