"Police are especially keen to trace the man with the sword who came to the aid of their officers, and have asked for anyone with information to call them" is a euphemism for 'we wanna arrest him, so please turn him in', the other one we hear a lot is 'he is helping the police with their enquiries', meaning we HAVE arrested him and he's being grilled now.
under the current government, laws are not to protect the public, and especially not to protect them from the government. there is no bill of rights or constitution, so the government gets to interpret the law to suit them. if someone is acquitted they frequently will say the criminal took advantage of a loophole to escape justice', not that he should not have been prosecuted in the first place as the circumstances did not fit the legal definition of what he was being prosecuted for. they will then make a big to-do about tightening up the law, eliminating the 'loop-hole' and then quietly dropping the whole matter till later when it can be rushed thru in time to look good for the next election.
there have been a rash of shootings here lately (3 or 4), usually of kids, shows how good the anti-gun laws are against criminals. honest people can't own or carry a weapon even in defence, criminals now frequently do & use them. the shooting sport have virtually died out (except amoungst the elite, like labour party ministers, who go pheasant shooting (or is it peasant)). olympic shooters have to practice in germany or elsewhere where they have less restrictions
govt. response to the 'crime wave' is to 'tighten up' existing gun laws. they still think that all of a sudden, a new law will keep the criminals from buying them out of the back of a car for £5.00. looks good on the news at 9 tho. they will also be putting armed police patrols in the area. of course the odds of them being there to prevent a shooting, rather than to clean up afterwards are not favourable, but it sounds good. they also said the public will probably never notice they are armed. does a lot of good, that.
luckily for me you can still possess a knife or sword on your own property, just never use it in defence or you get charged with possession of an 'offensive' weapon'. offensive i guess means the liberals find it offensive (definition A->C below) that anyone can own one except them, as in the other definitions excepting D.

if a 90lb elderly lady thwacks a 250lb 16yr old thug trying to steal her retirement cheque with her cane, she'll likely get charged not only with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but possession of an offensive weapon, and also endangerment of a minor, and be put on the sex offenders list for that child abuse. if she has a heart attack she'd probably be charged with felony murder too if they could.
