I held my nose and entered our local Wal-Mart today.
"Looking for a Buck knife," I say.
"You mean a Buck knife or that brand?"
"Both," I say.
He frowned, concentrating hard and bringing all of his IQ points to bear on my confusing statement.
They had one 110 in plastic. The sheath WAS one of the good Cordura sheaths, though, that was a positive.
The 110 was $28.87 and it was the only one in the store. I had them check under their counter and in storage. Apparently at one time they had 110s in boxes--but not now.
They had one folding Omni Hunter at just under $40 and one tiny slippy (maybe a 371) for just under $20.
I ask if it's made in the U.S. He says, sure, says so right here. I look.
It actually says "Made in America or Imported." Just below that it says, "Made in China." I show him that. Oh, he says, shrugging his shoulders.
That was the entire stock of Buck knives. I asked why and the manager (who had arrived by now, because I tend to make an impression) said that they are going over more to Gerbers, although he expected more Bucks to be coming in.
"Gerbers? You talking about baby food?" I ask innocently.
"No......them knives there," he says, waving his arm at the glass case.
"Look cheap," I said.
"Yeah, people don't got a lot of money........but them Bucks is really pricey."
"You're trying to say......expensive," I say.
"Yeah!!! Spendy!!" he says, grinning with pleasure at this opportunity to display his immense vocabulary.
Having served my time at Wal-Mart.....I sigh.......I leave.
