No Bucks in WalMart?

Most interesting... I'm on it. Sometimes Wal-Mart on-line will carry different stuff, but in talking to our sales analyst WMOL hasn;t ordered this. He is checking into a couple possible scenarios... Has anyone bought one? It could be mislisted.

you guys just like to send me down rabbit holes don't you? :D

I just got the one that I ordered from Walmart online. It is the 347 large Vantage Pro.

The one I got yesterday came with a really cheap nylon sheath. The one I bought there years ago also came with a nylon sheath, but it was a lot better.

I might be wrong, but I bet you'll find that new nylon sheath is a lot better
then you think. I've carried mine everyday for around 2 months now and it
is still as good as new. That doesn't mean it will be in a year or so, but I'm
betting it's a pretty good sheath. Very heavy nylon and excellent stitching.
Carried horizontal it's pretty "stealthy". I'd never get by with carrying mine
in Leather, don't have any problems with the Nylon. Yeah, I still like the leather
sheath though.
Regards Sonny

My closest WallyWorld still has the 110/119 for $27/$34 - in stock - in boxes. Their stock remains fairly constant... easily done there - try to find an 'associate' at that checkout!

I wonder if you and Tarman are talking about the same sheath???

Sounds like Tarman is talking about two different recent sheaths of synthetic material.

Can we get some information on the current (most recent) types of synthetic sheaths that are being provided?

I read somewhere the 110 and 119 are made of different steels depending on where it's sold at? Example being Walmart, Basspro, and some other store each having different steels for the blades and the price/packaging being different?

Anyone know?

Bass Pro Shops has a special 110 with 154CM steel. They also sell the standard 110

In this case I would expect that they have the 154CM model because they asked Buck to make them specificaly for BPS. Most places I see offer the exact same 110 with a nylon sheath at one price and a leather sheath at a higher price. No other difference between the two I know of other than you might find one sold in a box and the other in a blister pack

Cabela's also offers the Alaskan Guide 110 in S30V. We've been assured by Buck that the Walmart 110's and 119's with 420HC blades are the exact same knives as those found anywhere else with the exception of the sheaths.

Ok, Plumber covered the steels so I'll discuss the sheaths . Tarman, yrs. back (late 80's)Buck offered a cordura sheath a much heavier material than the nylon sheaths of today . Those were discontinued in the early 90's about the time of the switch to laminate wood handle material .(not sure on other models just what I noticed on a few)
But you could still get the leather sheaths from Buck as I like those and thats the route I go . They cost about 10$ plus shipping and to me their worth it both for looks and durability . DM :)

Thanks David. Do you have any pictures that illustrate the different sheaths?

The new sheath seemed more like a generic folder sheath, and granted I haven't tried it I wasn't impressed too much with it. But for the price, I'm definatley happy. The other nylon sheath I got about 5 years ago was better, and was more contoured to fit the knife. If I had a camera I'd take pics.

Yeah, I think I've seen those new ones on e-Bay.

They look like a little sack to drop the knife into.....pretty horrible. I guess that's one way that Wal-Mart is keeping the price low to kill all competition.

I'd be fine to see Buck quit doing business with Wal-Mart. Quality knives don't fit in with that place.

(At least in my very humble opinion.)

I know prices would go up......but they should, because the value is there in abundance.

The good news is that most of us can get along with just one good leather sheath for dress-up and one good Cordura sheath for most uses.

Due to that fact......(and the fact that some have had expensive, custom sheaths made) there's plenty of good sheaths around.

We can throw away the damned Wal-Mart sheath.

:)

I'm going to run to town later and I'll check the local Walmart when I do. Last I checked they had Bucks and if they still do, I'll buy a couple more just to do it.

If Walmart's selling Bucks, that means Buck is selling Bucks so that's a good thing! While a prospective buyer may not be willing to pay the price for a 110 at a local hardware store, the lower price offered at Walmart might convince them to go ahead and we will have a new customer. We all know how one owning just one Buck is like trying to eat just one potatoe chip!

I held my nose and entered our local Wal-Mart today.

"Looking for a Buck knife," I say.

"You mean a Buck knife or that brand?"

"Both," I say.

He frowned, concentrating hard and bringing all of his IQ points to bear on my confusing statement.

They had one 110 in plastic. The sheath WAS one of the good Cordura sheaths, though, that was a positive.

The 110 was $28.87 and it was the only one in the store. I had them check under their counter and in storage. Apparently at one time they had 110s in boxes--but not now.

They had one folding Omni Hunter at just under $40 and one tiny slippy (maybe a 371) for just under $20.

I ask if it's made in the U.S. He says, sure, says so right here. I look.

It actually says "Made in America or Imported." Just below that it says, "Made in China." I show him that. Oh, he says, shrugging his shoulders.

That was the entire stock of Buck knives. I asked why and the manager (who had arrived by now, because I tend to make an impression) said that they are going over more to Gerbers, although he expected more Bucks to be coming in.

"Gerbers? You talking about baby food?" I ask innocently.

"No......them knives there," he says, waving his arm at the glass case.

"Look cheap," I said.

"Yeah, people don't got a lot of money........but them Bucks is really pricey."

"You're trying to say......expensive," I say.

"Yeah!!! Spendy!!" he says, grinning with pleasure at this opportunity to display his immense vocabulary.

Having served my time at Wal-Mart.....I sigh.......I leave.

Here's a picture of some of the non-leather sheaths that I have. The latest is the one on the far right. I have another somewhere that is designed like the new one, but trimmed out like the second one from the right.

The new ones are Ok I suppose, but I like the older style better.

Thanks for the picture Plumberdv. The new sheath I got a couple days ago is the same as the one on the far right of your pic. It's flat, has what seems to be a bit of melted plastic on it, and just seems a bit cheap. I wouldn't want to lose a knife over a bad sheath. The older sheath I have and much prefer is the second from the right in your pic. Seems like that was made for a 110, while the newer one will just fit a 110 into it. Just my .02

That's a nice photo showing the different nylon sheaths. I have a small box full of the new ones on the right. I've found the snaps are weak, so I've gone back to leather for my EDCs. I don't mind the look of the new nylon one, just the weak snaps I've found on a couple. The new one looks like a cell phone case which enables one to take it places where an obvious knife sheath may be more... upsetting to some perhaps.

My current sheath for my 110/111 EDC rotations (I don't own a 112) is a distressed brown leather Alaskan Guide sheath.

I wonder how the 'basic', ie, no cost, nylon sheath from the Buck Custom Shop is compared to the bp-ed 110s' sheath? Bet it's the same! No matter - I carry my 110s as I do other 'pocket knives' - in my pocket. I have a bunch of 110 sheaths on a cabinet shelf. The now-gone 419 Kalinga Pro in S30V - sheathed - goes in my pocket, too... big pockets!

Yeah, the 110s & 119s know-not where they are bound when they are made. BTW, The Bass Pro Shops have a specialty 110 made for them of CPM154 - not 154CM. Both are good steels - but they aren't the same. The BCS only uses S30V & 420HC now, so BPS is the only way to get that steel in a 110.
