No collection is complete without a...

A Buck 110. As if that one hasn't been said enuff. :p

After that, a Spyderco clipit of some variety.

Both are responsible for the folding knife "Golden Age" we are enjoying today and appropriate homage should be paid to them. :D

I was going to compose a "real answer" to this question, but so many things kept popping into my head I gave up. There are just too many! Maybe no collection is truly complete. It is an addiction.- But safer than Heroin or Crack. (Not necessarily cheaper, however.)

I agree. Maybe the question should have been "what are the staples of knife collecting?" But even that is impossible to answer. The real question is what knives have had the biggest impact on today's collectable and user market.

To that, my, and many other's, answer is the Buck 110. Today's knife world would be a lot different without it. Of course there were locking knives before, but the 110 was a solid, sturdy, safe locking knife. They raised the bar on quality control... to this day Buck 110s are built like tanks and if taken care of will last as long as the blade can be sharpened. My oldest is 32 years old and locks as tight as my newest.

It's simple, traditional design may not appeal to the mall ninja, but it prooved that a folding, locking knife of that size is useful and would sell. Without that knife we may be talking about our tactical, two hand opening slip joints.

Besides all of that, it's a wonderful user knife. Very well balanced and made of great steel.

rather then put a knife it would seem to me that you you have to have something to fill a roll

a Bowie
a historical knife
a traditional sheffield pocket knife (I may let americans off with a US one)
a SAK
a spyderco

These threads make me laugh, because I don't own:

A Buck 110.
A bowie knife (Benchmade 43 doesn't really count).
For that matter, any fixed blade other than a Spyderco Spot.
A traditional slipjoint (like an Old Timer).

Yet almost everybody else has these.

I'm planning on getting a traditional (Queen MOP Stockman), but I have no desire for a Buck 110, nor any practical need, even for collection purposes, a big ol' bowie or other fixed blade.

Eyetye swinguard. Ahhhhh! Such a sweet swift sound. Music to my ears.

9 inch is rapido while 18 inch is a terrific Zorro prop.

Bladeauction.com usually has some prime specimens.

Linking to active auctions is bad. Very, very bad. You need to remove that link...pronto, before a Super does it for you.

No collection is complete without a wife to ask "why do you need so many knives?"

I'm still single, but do girlfriends, parents and friends asking me why I need so many knives count?

They do sell knives on street corners ;)

...at least one custom. There's nothing like the feeling of waiting a long time for something special, or at least of buying something that's non-production.

Also, at least one Himilayan Imports khukuri is a must-have. Where else can you get hand-made knives from such a great company for so little? Of course, the downside is that you can never buy just one. :)
