A genyuuaaawine Russell Barlow. Just like Huck and Tom.

You took the words right out of my mouth... And I'll take a Sabre if I can't have a Russell.
Ebay. Ebay. Ebay.

something your Father owned AND used...

My Dad's not a knife guy at all, but I have his naval officers ceremonial sword -- does that count?

I know it does, I just wanted to make you guys jealous. :D

How about a slip joint :)

Yes, a high quality slipjoint.

Something like a...let's say...Schatt & Morgan Deluxe English Jack or
a Carl Schlieper Eye Brand Stockman in Sambar Stag.

One of those or anything similar

Here is the definitive post on this subject. Feel free to stickie:D

Buck 110 ,I still don't have one yet though

A fully serrated Spyderco and a PE one (I have a Serrated SS Police and a Chinook3)

Americans need a Bowie and Brits need a Kukuri. As a Canadian and knife addict I feel the need for both.

A first rate custom from a top notch maker. I only have one custom but it is a Lambert Whar with CF scales and timascus bolsters and it is shockingly good.

A knife with history. I have a Second Pattern FS Dagger but what you need will be based on your interest and heritage.

Something for fighting zombies. I have a Cheness katana with custom wrap.

A slip joint

A first Rate military style folder like an Emerson or Strider
A SAK

A bunch of Moras and opinels etc as users

Some type of camping/bushcraft knife. Not necessarily an actual bushcrafter but something to make fuzz sticks etc. I have a Scrapyard SS4

A first rate neck knife like a Buck Hartsook or Atwood. I have a Strider ED.

The most important knife should be your EDC. It makes sense that the knife you carry every day should be one you feel strongly about. Mine is always changing currently a Swamp Warden

BALISONG!

of course.

Ill second that Chuck!!! Not only is it a great design for function and reliability, but it is without question, the most fun knife design around...its much mopre than a knife, its a stress reliever, physical theropy device, art form, and fun all around "man toy" lol...:D

At some point everyone needs to play with one....

No collection is complete without a...

Everyone should have at least one crappy POS knife that they're reluctant to admit they like.

A zombie, but goodie.

I think it's more about where the individual is at in their knife knowledge and appreciation. For example, at this point for me, I don't need an Axis lock, however it was very important that I had one at some point. Same goes for AO, Bali and just about all other features in a knife. The right tool for the job is what I need regardless. Everything else is gravy.

With that being said, here are some things that everyone should at least experience at some point if they really want to know the knife world:

Various super steels: For example INFI, S30V, VG-10, etc.
AO
Autos
Slip Joints
Balis
Axis
Lockback
Liner Lock
Frame Lock
Various blade shapes: Wharnecliffes, Drop Points, Clip Points, etc
Super choppers: Kukhri (spelling?), machetes, big a$$ knives, etc.
Gents knives (not necessarily uber expensive)
Multi tools
Custom stuff
