No more autos or balis for me!

I got away from butterfly knives and autos years ago for the same reason. I did buy a house in Tenessee recently where autos are legal, luckily the only otf I stashed away and now have there is a bm infidel.

I carry a megafolder(s) because I follow Rex Applegate's teachings on blade length.

I used to be happy with 3"-4" blades. Then I came back from Iraq. These days it's about feeling safe. I keep 2 plate carriers and gas masks in the trunk of my car. The megafolders are just another layer of safety.

Does that make sense?

I think you feel better and safer which is the impotant thing. But i do think its an emotional response rather than a rational one.

Totally :D

I have never bothered with an Auto and have gotten rid of all of my assisted open knives except two. One I bought on my honeymoon and the other I plan to disable one of these days. I am tired of having to tell people, "It is not a switchblade." or "No, it is not illegal."

It is amazing how some people (including LEOs) just assume it is illegal when it looks different than a SAK.

I don't carry knives for SD, so speed isn't a concern of mine. If a knife is good for utility, I'll use whatever I please.

This limited my balisong collection down to 1.

The only autos I have are for sentimental reasons, but never see any pocket time or use.

I agree, the older I get, the less hassle/expense I want from legal system. I still own couple bali's and 1 auto OTF and 1 A/O, they are now part of collection, no longer users, I'm not going to sell them unless I really need money! But I no longer buy any more of them. Thanks to modern high speed opening manuals, flipers, etc I no longer need autos or A/O.

When I sold crank, I had it stuck in my head that I had to carry a classy switchblade (usually a Microtech). I was a child of the 80s, watching cop/crime shows like Miami Vice. What's the first thing that happens when a shipment of dope shows up? Guy pops a switchblade and does a taste.

Corny, I know.

This post is more for me than you. Something about seeing my own written words...

I'm done with buying knives that I can't legally carry. I can't rationalize having (example) $700 tied to up in a custom D/A OTF. It would be better used buying silver bullion or cases of MREs.

Rant over.

(Anyone else feel the same?)
Used to live in CA. Now that I live in AZ, and have tasted actual freedom, I'll never leave. And I felt as you do once upon a time.

I'd rather live in CA then Arizona or Texas. I just drove back a few months ago from Monterey CA back to FL and went through Arizona and Texas. Nothing but tumble weeds and state troopers with cowboy hats.

This is honestly what's kept me from buying autos. I want an auto so bad, but I just don't. My state allows me to carry them with my ccw, but since I do travel to other states occasionally, I like having things that I can carry in most states. That's also why I try to keep my knives under 3.5". Despite how beautiful they are or cool they are, I just don't spend money on stuff I can't use.

Then why does anyone need more then two knives if they are just to use? I'm guessing because they are beautiful and cool.

I'm the same way. I can't spend money on things I can't carry/use. I own less than 10 knives.

Well if you can afford to spend money on art, that's one thing. If you can't then it's valid to now want to spend money on things you can't use in multiple places. lol. I see a difference in collecting multiple knives you can use, and then collecting multiple knives that you can't even use or carry, or legally even have in your own home in many places.

Still haven't found a state where my prototype folding halberd (quad tri-ad locks!) will be legal.

All kidding aside, I've never owned a bali or an auto being as I live in the USSI.

I can afford art that gets used...

Example:

I can't afford to own things that I'm afraid to carry/use.

Some parts. Others are Evergreen Forests.

Yeah. I'd love a nice Bali but I can't carry them. I'd much rather spend the cash on something I'd use.

Move to Texas. The most practical place to live.

Actually, the laws are kind of nuts in Texas... Like "Bowie" knives are illegal to carry, but the law gives no definition of what it considers a "Bowie" to be.

They're generally not enforced though. So long as you're not harassing folks down at the local Piggly-Wiggly with it.(we don't actually have Piggly-Wigglies)
