One tip I saw on YT and have used is to heat up the foam with a heat gun while the Kydex is coming up to temp in the toaster oven. I think I bought the mid grade foam, but so far so good.

You are so right. That does work better, not sure if I saw it somewhere or not, but I do that and it works great. I also heat the blade a bit too. I almost went for the mid grade foam but decide to see what all the fuss was about. I was actually getting really good details with the standard foam but it just never came back to form. Even when it was new it would leave the sheath prints in the foam.

I need one of those thermometer inferred guns. My toaster thermostat is so off that 175 degrees was actually getting like 400 to 500. I have to put a turkey thermometer in there to be sure. When I first started, I couldn't figure out why my kydex was melting. haha. It's tricky till ya get the temps right, can't get it to hot cause then it turns all shiny and from what I researched, That's no good.

Those are looking sweet man, How long is the blade on the one right above mine?

And if i want the blade 13-15" how long do you think i should make the handle to balance it out right?

14.5 inches. The handle on that one is 6.5" long, if that helps. I'm pretty sure it would fit Dubz perfectly in terms of hand size.

Your stuff is looking better all the time CF. Very nice work.

Thanks, Trade!

Crimson: I really like the 5th blade from the bottom. Do you have pics of more of your finished knives?

See thats about the perfect length for what im trying to do!! 14.5" blade = SWEET.

If i measure my design saying the handle is 6", that would proportion the blade to about 14. And that would work with me.

But im worried if i make a big and wide 14-15" blade and i keep the design the same as it is now it might have a real weak spot wear the blade and handle meet. I wanted to go without a normal finger "choil" but i wanted to design it similar to some of the custom bowies. Not the shape of the knife like a bowie, just where the blade and handle meet up like some bowies.

Like on this one.. these are NOT my pictures, just knives i seen here on BF.

But if i want to keep it really strong so there is no weak spot maybe i might need to make the indent smaller, like so...

But it seems like bowies are pretty strong even with the deeper indent, or choil area... whatever that section is called...

What do you think?

That one you mentioned is the chopper I'm building for WW. I'm pretty excited about that one too.

Sure. I've got a ton in my Photobucket account. Here's the khukuri that Jonny mentioned:

Camp knife:

Dagger:

EDC:

My dao, with my wife's artwork etched into the blade. Not for sale, which is probably good because most folks seemed to think the artwork is too busy.

I actually got into knifemaking from modding Becker knives actually. I started making scales for my BK11, and then eventually made one of the fugliest file knives you've ever seen... Made this one in September of 2011. I think I've come a long ways in 2 years and 4 months...

I'm really into swords, as you might be able to tell. The handles right now are just rough, so I can check the balance and point of percussion relative to the harmonic curve for the steel and blade shapes. They'll get shaped and polished and so forth. The katana-like blade is going to end up like the other one, with a western-style guard. They're going to be replicas of the heron-mark swords from the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. When my end mills for my new milling machine arrive, I'll be milling out the slots for the guard and pommel.

WW, I wouldn't worry about weak spots. Steel is very strong stuff. Most of those blades you pictured have what we'd consider a rat-tail tang, which, as you know from Ka-bar USMC knives, are actually quite strong. Don't drill a hole right up at the top of it, and you'll be fine.

Yes sir, and thanks ;) that ones MINE :D The small one under it too.

Big on should make one HELL of a chopper!! Looks like its going to be able to really hold its own in the chopping game!!

I love how wide the blade is :D Cant wait Crimson!!

That's blue-dyed stabilized maple burl from Burl Source for the handle scales, incidentally. It doesn't show up well in pictures, but it's really good-looking stuff.

Amazing where you can end up from modding Becker knives...

Wow! That kukri looks Awesome!!! Very nice work on them. Really like that EDC as well.

I picked up a box of old files at a flea market for cheap and started on one knife so far but haven't finished yet. Seems these Becker knives turn many people from modding into making their own.

Very cool knives and swords Crimson. Keep up the awesome work!

You Lucky son of a gun!! I can't wait to see it finished! That vs the BK9? Who's gonna win. haha

Sweet man!! Thats really good news. I really like the shape i have now and DONT want to change that area.

I just need to work on proportions, but i like the design i have now. The curve in the handle is similar in position to the Condor speed bowie, or Dundee Bowie. I recently held one and really liked how the handle set in position to the blade. But it needed some type of guard i felt and i dont like the deep clip points on most bowies... i mean they look cool... but for me, in use, id rather a much less pronounced clip if any clip at all.

I tried to keep it a drop point but the longer i made it the more "off" it looked so i added a little bit of a clip to keep it looking good to me. Ill play with this some more but i think this might be the design i end up going with.

I tried designing a short woods sword too but it looked RETARDED. and was discarded immediately LMAO.

I remember when you made this CF. Looks freakin' sick man, I love it. Actually, it's probably my favorite kukri.

I'd probably have to agree with you Dubz.
It's unique, but at the same time it looks very "usable".
It just looks like it was born to eat!
I like it...a lot!

I cant wait either... really i cant wait to sink that thing into some WOOD!! Just looking at designs... Id say the custom from Crimson will win... But we shall see...

The real fun will be when i put it up against the Keffeler. They are much similar in designs and shapes. But the Keffeler is a lot thicker and im sure quite a bit heavier. So its not going to be a totally fair fight HAHA But its going to be fun doing the comparisons. :D

WW, I like the clip too. Looks like a good design. You gonna try to grind it yourself?

Thanks, Dubz! I actually prefer the one I made before that:

-edit- Let's be honest here. Ethan is a much better designer than I, and a far more savvy woodsman. FAR more savvy. And Dan, well, he's the current world champion and world record holder chopper WITH THAT CHOPPER, in addition to being a better knifemaker than I. I hope to make blades half as awesome as his. In fact, I'll be using his heat treat protocols at Peters HT, with his generous permission. If my creations can come even close to holding their own with the king, let alone Dan's behemoth, I'll be stoked. And have you seen his Super Assassin wakizashi? I usually don't use stupid made-up words like amazeballs, but it just sorta fits...
