No ZT for me sorry

4x4 over 2x4 any day of the week. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. That's the way I see lockbar inserts....

I bought a 3500 Chevy 4x4 new in 2000 - first thing I did was high-side the front end in a friends driveway on the snow pile, being cute, and had to shovel it out. Embarrassing. Loved the truck though, but now I drive a rear wheel drive only, and I never spine-whack it.

ZT designs seem to be made to handle other tasks, otherwise they could build them with the cross-sectional blade geometry of an Opinel and they would do every one of these tasks much better.

From the ZT homepage:

I've read many such discussions over the years and I can't reconcile:
  • The marketing as quoted above
  • Reviews about such knives on this forum talking about the strength, solid lockup, hard use capabilities, etc.
  • Every time somebody uses such a knife for something harder than dicing an onion, and has a problem, often with the lock, there are a lot of responses along the lines of "a knife is made for cutting, you're using it wrong".
Never once have I read an explanation of why a knife blade should be thicker than an Opinels' if all it should ever be used for is cutting...

For what use case(s) is the average ZT folding knife design optimized for?

Of course that's marketing speak but if you're saying that ZT knives won't stand up to normal use which IMO would be cutting cardboard and the like, that's BS.

If I knew that I was going in to a dangerous situation and could only use a knife I would carry a fixed blade for my primary weapon, not a folder. Because of the possibility of trouble finding you when you least expect it, I'd carry a fixed Bradford Guardian or a Winkler Knives II around that 3 to 4 inch mark.

My primary reason for buying smaller knives are bushcrafting(4 and 5 inch) and self defense(1, 2, 3 and 4 inch). Legal max length in my state is 3. In a real SHTF situation I'd probably carry a machete(ESEE Junglas) when ever I went out, and I'd not go out that often.

I've owned many firearms, but don't own any today. Still, I'm in to knives and archery, and one day will again own a firearm or two. I sold all of my firearms b/c I relocated to the Bay Area by motorcycle and got rid of most of my property at that time.

Defence? I think you could remove a fence with a ZT, as long as you aren't spine-whacking.

In fact, if you were to need to use your knife in DEFENSE, as long as you used the cutting edge as your leading assault, instead of the spine, I think you would be fine.

Live by the snark....etc.

It sounds DEFENSE in your world is the other party (bad guy or mad dog) just stands or lays down still/motionless so that you can take your time to cut or slice it/him/her without worrying about any possible pressure let alone sudden shock on the spine. In my world, that is what butchers and coroners do with a knife.

:eek:Yes ! What if your assailant is so rude as to strike your knife on the spine with a bat or other heavy club like weapon ? Oops , there go your fingers !

A 3500 is rather large as a daily for me, but I would drive a Silverado or a Sierra for sure. But only if it had 4wd.

In MY world, my knife is for cutting things, and my .45 is for DEFENSE.

Thank you, please pull around.

Mine was a single rear wheel, standard cab 1-ton. Most people would have never known it was anything other than a standard truck, unless you knew about trucks. It had the HD transfer case with the PTO, and the huge axle and rear drums. Quite a beast underneath. It also got 11mpg uphill, downhill, pulling a trailer or not. Loved that truck but when gas went to $3 a gallon.....

I never spine whack or get into spinning dervish of death "defence" situations with my ZT or my truck.

In the highly unlikely event that such a scenario presents itself, I would expect for my hand to firmly grip the knife, assuring the locking bar remains in place. Now, if your tactic is to grip the knife by the rear pommel and give your opponent a spine whack, then granted, you might have a problem.

Pretty evident that you guys have no concept of how insanely chaotic is a fight for your life .

You assume much, grasshopper.

If you want to get into a penis measuring contest, go to prac-tac. This conversation was about ZT and how crappy they are because some guy on youtube spine whacks them to prove how useless they are at cutting.

Oh, and how some bint with spandex trashed ZT because she does not know how to operate a T6 torx, although it seems she does understand the concept of how to screw things.

And 4x4s.

It's been fun, and the usual ZT bash comes to a smoldering end....at least in MY world.
