Thanks, I had seen those a few times here and there but never really heard anything about them. How sturdy are they?

They are a bit bulky but they lock in pretty sturdy, you will have to make a platform for them and you can mount them just about anywhere.

Thanks guys!

This was a great morning. I take Noah out whenever I can to expose him to the outdoors and all of it's beauty.

We were getting ready to set up our blind and start calling. While I was digging the blind and decoys out of my pack we heard a distant gobble. We kept calling back and fourth to track his position. We found out chances are he was on the roost on property that was posted and we do not have permission to hunt on across the dirt road from the land we do have permission to hunt on.

We were bummed out that we couldn't track him any further. But he kept gobbling, and gobbling.... so we walked down the road away from the bird knowing that the turkeys travel through the land that we can hunt on. We decided to set up down the road away from the road at a old hunting camp that is on the property. We were hoping we could call him the 1/2 mile to where we were. After we were set up and the decoys were out we sat and called. Once again the tom gobbled back. We continued to call him and we could hear him getting closer and closer but still on the wrong side of the road directly behind us. Not good...

I changed my calls to soft purrs and small clucks and that seemed to get him to cross the road and come right up the trail to the cabin to our right. I could see him but Noah couldn't so I told him to be patient and take the shot when he feels comfortable and I would try to call him in closer since I could only see his head looking around.

I make a few more soft purrs and he came charging towards us down the trail towards our decoys with a smaller jake leading the way. Something hung him up about 30 yards out and he stopped and turned around heading back where they came in from. I got him to stop and turn aorund by making one more soft purr with my call.

Noah stayed patient and composed and waited for a safe ethical shot. The tom extended his neck to look around and Noah was lined up for a great shot opportunity, but wouldn't take the shot. I had to lean over and whisper "take the shot, take the shot". Noah made a well placed shot and dropped him in his tracks. We jumped up and ran over with a huge smile on our faces. He told me later that he was nervous and was waiting for me to make the call to shoot.

My goal was to get him addicted to hunting and I think I did. This bird was bigger than the birds that his friends at school got this season. So that was a big plus. I feel so fortunate that I was able to call well enough and help make his day. I can't wait for our next adventure.

Thanks for being supportive guys! Here are some pictures.

Nice bird!
That brought a smile to my face.
I bet he was stoked!
Some great pics Dres. Thanks for sharing.

Yeah, a 25 gets you assured admission into OSU, which is about 6 miles from me.

But yeah I'll probably retake at least one more time. For two reason
1) I'm going to try for a scholarship
2) my sister got a 32, so if I can beat that then I'll be really happy :D

LOL! I got a 26 the first time I took it. I wanted to beat my brother (he got a 29), so retook and got a 25:D

Good luck when you retake it. Talk to your guidance counselor about all available scholarship opportunities, every red cent helps. If I had applied for more scholarships in high school, I may not be working in a damn factory right now.

Nice bird Dres. Kids smiling so hard looks like his face is about to break.:D I hear you on coating breaking a pain. Was cutting some boxes up today with the 2 (coated) and then used my 2 stripped and makes a big difference. There is definately alot of meat on turkey's. How many can you shoot in a day? I never have gone hunting for them. Not around where I'm at. There's a good amount in lower MN though from what I hear. My cousin goes all the time. Here's a pic with a couple she got.

Nice one Dres!

Just got a cool glow in the dark Nalgene bottle, a Light My Fire firesteel, and a roll up sleeping mat (because a blanket on a hotel room floor isn't a good sleeping arrangement, plus camping).

Thanks guys! Here is one more picture that I forgot to add. for a 15 year old he sure is tall!

Thanks! we are allowed 2 bearded turkeys in the spring and 2 turkeys in the fall bearded or not. There is no designation per day. If you can get a double, your done for the season.

Looks like your cousin knows what she is doing! Maybe she can give us some tips... lol

Dynamic, received the hawk today, thanks brother!! Nothing wrong with this what so ever!! Already cleaned her up a bit, later ill strip the rest of the coating, do a little more sanding and smoothing, then probably elctro etch my worldwood logo on it pretty deep, bath it in ferric chloride, then do a FC brush down on it to darken it up a little more... and maybe even stonewash the head (undecided)... then sharpen her all up!!

Funny you mention that. I just got the same one from UPS Thursday. Got it stripped and sharpened yesterday not didn't get any pics. Picked up some PCB etch from the shack yesterday. Hope to get to it tomorrow sometime. Going to look at a kayak in the morn. Two person wilderness system, hope to get at the right pric . I'm ready to get on the water and get some fishing out of my system. I'm the same way, I use whatever I got, usually an ugly stick with whatever reel it came with. It was a hand me down. I picked up a bait caster Daiwa with rod at a thrift store last year for $7 but haven't quite gotten the hang of it. And on a kayak I'd rather just use what's easy.

Keep us posted on the hawk, I'll post some pics tomorrow in my progress.

That's an awesome bird, Jeremy! You are one hell of a BIL for doing the calling and letting him take the bird. I'll bet that was damned exciting. Maybe I should do some bow shooting this summer and get my tags this fall.

Beckerheads, what do you prefer to use when making home made tinder to catch sparks from a firesteel?

If you're making homemade, I'd go with dryer lint. Catches easily, burns for long enough to get your fire going and weighs nothing. I have a huge bag I've been collecting for a couple years (when SWMBO doesn't chuck it) and have a tin filled with it - you can pack a lot in because it's so compressible - that is in my starting kit for the fire pit. Unless you're a line dryer....then I guess you're SOL for lint. Unless your bellybutton collects it like mine.......

Looks good so far WW!

Jeremy

Thanks man!

Thanks bud.

And man i bet your excited for that kayak, i love kayaking. I miss mine, but i had it for close to 2 years and only used it twice so i sold it... Eventually ill get another once moved and everything. Father has a couple though.. Ill be bumming off him for a bit LOL

That was just 15-20 minutes of cleaning/sanding there on the hawk head. I plan to do some more once everyone else goes to sleep. I get excited doing stuff like this :D

Dryer lint.

I have spent good money or tinders, spent time making them using cotton and vaseline etc.... But for a cheap excellent tinder that can be shoved ANYWHERE taking barely ANY room and still catch a quick spark... Dryer lint. Free and has never failed me unless it was wet.

I think i have a youtube video somewhere showing lighting dryer lint with a ferro rod... Not that you need to see it to understand it LMAO

Thanks. Does it catch better with a bit of Vaseline or wax on it?
