Non-Knife People and Their Knives are Driving Me Nuts!!!

The above posts raise a whimsical smile of " ah been there and got the tshirt" with the reactions of nonknife carrying folk.

I've had countless similar comments directed my way most of the time when using some folder or small fixed blade to cut off clothes or free some tangled bandages on trauma patients as they are being resuscitated. I have become fairly oblivious/ignoring of these exclaimations but my wife, bless her heart, ran into this the other day:

while at a philanthropic/charity deal stuffing envelopes with the spouses club they had several boxes wound with plastic strapping and tape that needed to be opened. For the past 4-5 years she has carried one of the more inexpensive Benchmades (the now d/c'd, I think, panther with a partially serrated blade). This is notable in itself because she is a university graduate from an extremely liberal northeastern college with a background of being granola eatin, treehuggin, etc. Anyways, so she pulls out her knife, flicks the opening stud and proceeds to open a couple boxes, releases the lock, folds it up, puts it back on her waistband and.... there's silence and shocked disbelief. Then she gets deluged with a bunch of questions/commentary. She said that you'd think she pulled out a sword and decapitated somebody or something. And she was totally nonplussed because she carries this 24/7 and its like a tool!
Course, then one of her more smirking friends in this group that knows us well just has to speak up and inquire politely about how her 92FS and when she's gonna take her shooting..... but thats a whole nother story in and of itself.

I guess the endpoint of this fairly longwinded diatribe is that it really is a shame that you get classified as being somewhat fringelike for simply using a tool. I/we have started trying to educate folks about this slowly and gently, and I would encourage everyone here to do the same.

BTW, you can bet they all do bring their fairly nasty and neglected pocket knives our way for a trip through my apex or via my stones. It is somewhat ironic.

Cheers-

Another lab rat here. I sharpen most of my knives at work and use the microscope to have a good look at the edge.

Lucky Dog, Chistmas is around the corner, why not give some of your friends a decent knife.

I convinced our boss to buy us all Leatherman Waves!

I gave one of my work friends a BM Striker and a BM Nimravus, (BTW he wasn't one of those guys I mentioned with poor knife maintenance habits) he doesn't carry them because: 1) he thinks the Nimravus is too nice to use, and 2) He thinks his wife will accuse him of being "a OJ" his words.

Oh Well.

AAAARRGGHH!!!!

That reminded me of all the people who have said, of various flavors of knives in my possession,
frown.gif
"Is that the OJ knife?"

or "Did you sell a knife to OJ?"

And I've even heard that from people at knife shows! For a couple of years I had a sign at my table saying "$5 fine for OJ jokes, $1 fine for Bobbitt jokes."

See, every once in a while somebody at work spots one of my megafolders, or I discuss it if I think they can handle it. For the inevitable questions about "what's that thing for", I laugh and in a joking fashion say "Hey, I live in Richmond (Calif), ya gotta have something!".

Now, my town is known for being high crime. In other words, I'm quite open in dealing with the issue of "weaponry". I don't apologize for it; if they're around me long enough they're liable to find out about my website and court fight over CCW.

It's not an easy attitude to pull off but if you can do it in a friendly, non-confrontational and joking fashion you CAN do it, even in a liberal office atmosphere. In one office in San Francisco it got to the point where I was volunteering to walk some of the ladies to their cars late in the evening - the idea of having a "known tactical freak" around became just a normal thing.

And at that point, they're ready to accept the concept of CCW, aren't they?
