Non knife people's AWESOME knives. Lol

I've only read the first page here and OMG what's the big deal. If I buy a book that I think is the bomb anfpd the best book around, I would HOPE someone who knows more about books could point out better books so I could read better books. Any tool that you can get a better example of like a fake buck versus a real one, why not? You guys (not all) are way too sensitive. I have seen somebody buy those horrible knives on TV(cutlery xxxxer) and wonder why they can't sell them when they receive the bulk package. I had to tell him and show him they are crap that's why no mechanics at work will buy them.

There's no book of etiquette on 'What to do When Your Friend has a Crappy Knife' (unless it's compiled from BF archives).

No matter the product, there may be a better way to be helpful.

Sometimes people think they have a great product, simply because they have limited exposure to better examples. A more diplomatic response might be to say "Nice. Hey, if you like that....man, you should really try an XYZ. It is even better, it will blow your mind"

I'd never be offensive to someone simply because I disagree with them about the awesomeness of their choice. I see this all the time with rifles, bikes, motorcycles, flashlights, and pistols (the list goes on, but that's probably enough). I think it's great that someone is happy with what they have. If I can direct them to something even better...when they think they already have the best...it's really a win for them. But, I'd never disparage what they already have. I would just hope they try my suggestion. Then, one day, they might be the one to come back and talk trash about their former ignorance. On the other hand, if they don't take my suggestion, they are still happy with their item and I'm no worse off for it.

It probably will. The good ole smiley is a powerful weapon when used by the forces of good!! haha. :)

That's fair. Text is much more easily misinterpreted than direct speech. I was more confused than anything else. I'm used to being confused, though, so no harm done. ;)

This one might be long, but it will end up on topic. The sebenza I have (recent purchase) was my first 'drunk online purchase' ever. I was at a bar with a buddy getting a bit tipsy and showed him the knife on the bay and explained how much and how long I've wanted it. He said, "just buy it!". So I did... Anyway - I told him NOT to say anything to our mutual friend the next time we were all together as I was embarrased about spending $350 on a knife. (may start a thread on that topic) (which I'M SURE ILL BE RIPPED APART ON). Anyway - he told him. So my other friend immediately went to get his $150 knife he got from a marine magazine. I was shocked at what I saw. It was a small one marked only 'made in Taiwan, fury, and stainless steel'. I looked up fury knives on the bay and my heart sunk. ALL OF THEM were between $7 and $12... Holy hell he got ripped off... (gotta say that little thing was rock solid though)

It's all good :). It's been proven WITH SCIENCE that the sight of a smiley-face releases more dopamine and endorphins than heroin and super-crack combined.

Or a rock! :D
Paraframe is the only knife I got for free where I felt I got ripped off.

HEY! BB you don't have to apologize. this is my first day as a member, and i'm not a knife guy. I only come here to research junk i find at yard sales and pawn shops. I was put off by the op thinking how can i ask about a three finger Hammer Brand or a Colorado USA folder before i rip it up and make custom handles. I'm sure stories could be posted about my wonderfully cheap knives and the hours I've put in them to make them pretty.
we all have different goals. I did the survival stuff back in the '70's now i just like polishing old turds (coprolite) and what better to put them on than a vintage ithaca promo folder with Purina scales.
And Mr. Bender anyone quoting Jimi is alright and has more than "Experience" so don't fret.... just walk of the stage

Clapton described the performance: "He played just about every style you could think of, and not in a flashy way. I mean he did a few of his tricks, like playing with his teeth and behind his back, but it wasn't in an upstaging sense at all, and that was it ... He walked off, and my life was never the same again" eric clapton

I have a cousin who is sort of into knives. He carries a Kershaw that was gifted to him by his dad. He knows that I am into knives and he asked me about it. I told him that Kershaw is about as good as it gets in his price range. When we are together he asks about different mall ninja knives we see at the store, or wherever. Last Christmas I gave him an ESEE Izula. He hasn't used it much, he preferred his Winchester fixed blade. It wasn't until a week ago that he finally understood the quality and quite frankly the superiority of the ESEE. I didn't ridicule his Winchester, but when he asked me about it I told him the honest truth. I said that the Winchester is an OK knife but the ESEE is far better in terms of quality and edge holding ability. Now every time he sees a knife he likes he asks me about it before he buys it. I have steered him away from a few junkers and have told him to hang on to that Kershaw. Next week he is planning on buying a BK16. I've gotta say it is a proud moment when you get a non-knife person into better knives and see that they truly know the difference between a $15 Winchester and a $75 Becker.

First of all, he didn't apologize, and no one asked for, expected, or gave a sh*t about apologies. Secondly, on your first day on the forum, for your first post -- welcome, by the way -- you decide to jump into a settled argument to... what? Start things up again? Use that as an opportunity to introduce yourself? Make a 'pal'? You can resuscitate flatlining threads if you like, it's a free world. You can poke around at old arguments if you like, too. And I can say I think it's a bad idea, and shows poor judgement.

I'd also suggest that choosing to criticize the OP and fanning the embers of recently settled conflicts is really more of a 'third post' kind-of-thing ... 'stirring the pot' is considered borderline troll behavior. If you honestly take exception with something, fine. But I'm not sure how you could know what the OP was 'thinking' about your yard sale/pawn shop finds. Yes, the tone was off-putting, as previously noted; but presuming to guess what he might think of your knives is unfair.

That said, even if you're not a 'knife guy', the coprolite thing sounds... well, interesting :). I'm not sure gleaming dinosaur sh*t will threaten to replace Lightning-Strike Carbon Fiber or Zirconium, but you never know ;) . Mammoth tusk and fossilized Walrus ivory are highly prized, of course, and Meteorite finds its way in small amounts into high end custom folders and Bowie knives. So coprolite could -- maybe -- find it's own niche, though it's a tougher sell. I'd like to see pics of how the coprolite scales turn out; maybe you could open a thread here, or 'Maintenance, Tinkering and Embellishment', as a more positive introduction. Just an idea, and again, welcome to BF :)

There are a lot of people who seem to be competitive about a lot of things. If they see you with a knife they feel the need to point out they have this knife at home that not only was carried by Grandpa in WW2 after he killed an enemy general and took it, but the knife is also samurai steel made by the greatest sword maker ever who developed the process all other sword makers used, that could slice through an M16's barrel without damage, never needed sharpening because it self sharpened, .....etc., etc. The story gets longer and more dramatic as it is told.

I got that a lot when I was out walking my mastiff as well. There was always a dog at home bigger. One guy tried to tell me his step dad's/uncles/brother in law had a breed he couldn't remember but the dog was 5 foot tall at the shoulders and weighed almost 500 lbs.

The story just gets wilder and larger and more colorful. Just part of human nature I guess. :)

This happened last night... I am a Deputy with our County and had a new guy fresh out of the Academy on his first shift last night. I look at this purple real tree camo looking thing sticking out of his pocket and ask him "what is that"? He proudly pulls out a brand new...fresh from Amazon....Tac force assisted opening rescue knife. I look it over and promptly throw it in the garbage.

Wow! Took his knife and just threw it in the trash huh? I don't recall having worked with all that many cops or correctional officers that would put up with that. First day or not you are lucky you found the one guy that didn't deposit you face first into the garbage can to retrieve his knife. Cheap knife or not that is disrespectful as hell. How do you know his mother that while dying of cancer took the time to go buy that for him. He might know it's cheap but carries it proudly.

There was a guy that got put in a trash can and rolled down a flight of stairs once for much less of an affront. :D In a world like ours being a dunderhead with no social graces or just a rude person can make ones life interesting. I try to be polite to everyone myself and always encourage others to be polite as well. ;)

Doing good is admirable but doing it with grace is better.

Well said. I had a similar reaction... being generous is admirable, no question; but even if the knife that was thrown away had no sentimental or real cash value, the fact that he picked it out and decided it would do the job -- even if it was a PoS and unsuitable, I'm sure it was -- means tossing it out could be an insult to his decision-making skills, screw with confidence and self-esteem, and be generally emasculating.

In this instance, it seems it wasn't a problem, and this was a younger guy open to advice (in training, even), so it worked out well and the young cop ended up with a significant upgrade. Personally, I'd stay away from anything that could be insulting to the other person, even when the intention is to help, not humiliate. It could taint an otherwise noble gesture.

I guess they buy their knives from here...

I have friends who are like that. I usually suggest to them to knives priced similarly to what they paid, that looks wise may be similar, but of higher quality. This can be done tactfully by just talking up said knife, without insulting theirs. They may be ignorant, but they are not stupid, and will see the difference in quality for themselves, if they go and take a look. And usually they will. Smartphones are great things, you can pull up pictures, and even some YouTube vids to whet their appetite.

And you point is what?

To him, it probably was awesome...

I wear Walmart jeans and carry a Rockstead. If someone commented on how my clothing "wasn't awesome" I'd be offended. I don't need designer clothes; much like your "friend" doesn't need a designer knife...

So just what are "Walmart" jeans? I buy my jeans at Walmart and they are Wrangler brand snd sometimes Dickies.

Its about belittling the guy behind his back, for his lack of knowledge.
