Noss Hog will be testing a basic 9

I'd like to see more field tests w/o the destruction at the end. Side by side tests (chopping, skinning, slicing, batonning, ergonomics, wear resistance, etc...) of various knives from various companies/makers would be nice to see.

+1. With some attention to force as a factor. Hard to do without machines, but even I know when I'm swinging full out and when I swing in a more regulated fashion. Also, it would be interesting if one could attempt to capture technique in terms that look something like a system. Even though these things are subjective, some attempt to bound them with thick description and to abide by similar procedures across knives would at least give a chance for greater consistency. As for edges, I'd rather see each knife of similar size set up similarly. Stock edges can vary widely. Finally, it would be interesting to collect some comparative data--eg. depth of penetration, number of chops to clear a piece of wood, sharpness graded on some kind of scale before and after trials, etc.

I wanna see the use of a pole arm :D

a nice thick 2" pole to absorbe shock, big thick 1/4 plate steel on each side of the tang ratcheted down nice and tight. something you could really put your full weight into when you swing. :p

Well since this photo I have added a few:D... a nice B5 and a second B4:thumbup::cool:

Hey Tony, do either of your B9's have a penetrator tip? Looks like you may still have some searching to do. :D Crinkle, smooth, smooth w/penetrator. Not sure if there's a crinkle with PT

There were also some interesting "muddy" variations made for what I understood to be European military orders--6" clip-point blade with camo pattern coating, offered with or without serrations.

Mine is a tad thicker than .25 inch. It's at the lower right in the pic, just above the AK:

Great. You just pushed Tony G to shore up his European connections even more than before. That's all the rest of us needed. :D

Will, those are some nice Basics you own.

Ken,

I appreciate the compliment.

That's a stag-handled Basic 5. If you scroll through down through that thread I linked to above, there are a few more pics of it.

Guyon,

Thank you for the compliments and the nice job of posting the pic--appreciate that. I don't consider myself a collector, although I was lucky enough to keep a few Basics. You have some very nice ones yourself, as you posted above.

I'm nowhere near Tony G's class, though--he's the real deal, along with a few others here on the forums. I do envy those guys.

Those deserve a look here for the new guys. It's just an outstanding knife.

A few years ago when you could still send knives back to the shop for special mods, I had Jerry thin out a Basic 5 for me to use as a hunter. I also had him put a satin finish on it and removed the handle. Then I had Dennis Riley install one of his nice mortised stag handles, including cutting down the forward talon hole and adding a guard and domed pommel cap to finish it out. Turned out to be a very special piece.

Thanks to all for the congrats, the nice words and the new year's greetings.

...and a hearty Happy New Year to all you INFIhogs!

Now I need a Stag Busse:(

Thanks, Guyon--very kind of you to take the time to post those.

Thanks to all for the compliments. Glad you guys enjoyed the pics.
