Not bad for less than $10!

Here are a couple quick scans of my grab bag. I just typed a detailed description of them and bumped the wrong button and lost it, so I will retype it all later. Short version, they are all 100% useable with just minor cosmetic problems. The springs on a couple could be stronger, but they are not really weak. The Large Toothpick was included just for a size comparison to the Large Lady Leg and was not part of the grab bag.

One is a Remington. Interesting.

That is interesting. Many of us have speculated that different knife brands come from one place. I guess this pretty much proves that Remington and Rough Rider are made in the same place.

By the way, I really like the Remington, it is my favorite of the group.

I'm thinking of getting the Large Stockman with "old yellow handles."

I have 4 RR and the Yellow handle ones are my favorite. I like the old style shield on them. The other shields are kind of Cheesy to me. I have a Gunstock Barlow that for the price is an amazing knife but I believe four RR are enough for me.

Overall I am very pleased with my grab bag. I am not wild about all the pattern and color combos, but I had been curious about the Baby Sunfish, Doctor's knife, large Stockman and what the orange and white bone looked like, so I learned a lot for my $20.

1) White Bone Baby Sunfish - sharp blades, no cracks in the bone but one minor flaw in one scale on the side opposite the backsprings, overall the action is good but the tension is less on the big blade, small but consistent gap between one backspring and liner. This is a kinda odd feeling, very solid, heavy and thick little knife.

2) Faux Abalone Doctor's Knife - sharp blades, minor crack / flaw in one scale on the pivot end, minor gap between one backspring and liner on the pivot end, overall the action is good but the tension is less on the big blade.

3) Black Mother of Pearl Trapper (or is this real Abalone? I don't know??), marked Remington Collector's series - sharp blades, good action on the blades, lots of small gaps and glue showing where the scales are attached to the liners and one big flaw in the middle shell insert on the handle side opposite the blade mark where a piece of the shell delaminated. The shell is bright and eyegrabbing, but maybe was buffed a little too much???

4) White Mother of Pearl Stockman - sharp blades, good action on all the blades, no gaps anywhere. There is a big black line crack / flaw in one of the scales and lots of small gaps and glue where the scales attach to the liners. This thing is the biggest Stockman that I have handled so far and measures right at 4 9/16th inches closed. It feels really solid and heavy in the hand, but maybe too big for some pockets.

5) Orange bone Large Lady Leg - sharp blade, good action, no gaps, long hairline crack in one scale around one pin on the pivot end, rather sloppy fit inside the heal off the boot (backspring, liners and bolsters are not even). I am not sure that I really 'get' this knife, but I do like the color of the orange bone.

I am not much fond of the standard RR shield either. I got these two little amber bone RRs from SMKW and like the dogbone shield on them much better.

From Revolvergeek's description they may be getting down to the bottom of the barrel on the seconds as his seems to have shown up with many more flaws than mine. The orange is a nice bright color, my sunfish came with the orange bone. I had one in tortoise already and love the pattern so was happy to get another. I also love the Wildcat Driller pattern, sort of a Sunfish on steroids. I do find it interesting that you can buy a 10 dollar knife from Rough Rider or pay 35 dollars for the same knife with Remington's name on it...lol. I am still thinking hard about getting one of the collector rolls, 24 knives and trading roll-up storage pouch for 99.00. Same price as the seconds for their first quality and I would be covered for give away knives to friends and such for awhile.

One other advantage to these knives is they allow you to try a new pattern on the cheap. I bought the Wildcat Driller because I wanted to see if the pattern was one I would like as an EDC. I do like it, love the way it fills the hand and the broad blade cuts very well. Now that I know I like the pattern I have ordered a Canal Street Wildcat Driller in Ram's Horns. I would have never order a 120.00 knife on a whim but because I already know I like the pattern it took the doubt out of the equation. So if you have a pattern you like the looks of but aren't sure if you would like it for EDC buy a Rough Rider in that pattern and try it, if you like then buy the Case, or Queen, or whatever. You can always gift the RR to someone who needs a knife...or hang onto to it...they are nice for the money.

I've been thinking about this too, but looking at the picture at SMKW stops me. It appears that the trader rolls contain more than slippies. I'm afraid I'd end up with 20 fantasy knives that I'd never use.

Rough Rider doesn't really do fantasy knifes, 99% of their knifes are slip joints and lockbacks. They do have a couple of framelocks as well. In the pic it does show one of their stilettos but having one of those to give away isn't a bad thing...I have one and it is not a bad little knife. Next month I may order a set, if I do I will post pics when I get them.

I had one of the stilettos from SW. It appears to be the same knife. They are nice. Here's the bigger version of the pic. I count 8 one-handers.

Let's keep discussion to the traditional knives in this sub-forum, gents. Thanks.

I just got a new RR med Stockman in Saw Cut Bone. Where are these guys heads at? I mean :barf: the darn thing is sharp, all the grinds are perfect, the bolsters are perfect, each blade is wobble free and sharp as heck! I mean if they expect to stay in business they should really work on their...on their.....hmmm let me think......Prices!! no 10 bucks is OK....hmmmmmmmm...On their selection! No they have a good selection.......let me get back to you.

...to be continued!

Revolvergeek,
Very nice. The shields on those definately look great and the bone looks mighty fine also.

Nice Barlow pattern...is it the bark pearl? Nice looking Trapper as well. Any major problems with your set?

The only defects I spotted were, some possible blade defects on the trapper, and some scale gap between the scale and liner on others. These would be difficult for anyone to spot - the "SECOND" is much more noticeable, of course. The grinds are good. My biggest issue is...I would have like more handle material variety, and I already had that barlow.

My favorite is the black MOP.
