Not bad for less than $10!

Evolution, of sorts. Now that I have quite a few Rough Riders over the years, I notice a few changes.

1.) The first knife I have, a trapper, it has a shield 1/2" long and narrow, with "Rough Rider" on it. On the blade it has no writing, except for the "Rough Rider" and "stainless steel" at the base of the main blade. That was about 5 to 6 years ago.

2.) Next I have a sowbelly stockman, it now has an anvil with "tested sharp" and "Rough Rider" on the main blade. At the base it has "Rough Rider", then another anvil with "tested sharp", then it has "cutlery company", I think, my eyes have a hard time seeing that small.

3.) One of my seconds has the circle shield with a horseshoe with "tested sharp" and two big "R", one on top of each other. On the main blade it has horseshoe symbol again and then it says "Always Ready". I kind of like that saying. Then at the base of the blade it says 440 razor sharp steel.

4.) The new ones have the circle shield, no saying on the blade, except for the anvil. The "440 razor sharp steel" is on the other side of the main blade.

I kind of like the simplicity of the older design, with no saying on the main blade and the simple long and narrow shield. Of course they have improved the quality over the years and I guess that is the important part.

I might have to try one again. The one I had, I wasnt too impressed with, and gave it away. I just wounder why they dont offer RR's in carbon steel.

Had to pick up a $5 clip for a LM Wave from SMKW, and ended up adding 2 grab bags of seconds . Should be here Tuesday, I'll post pics.

Boy they sucked you in. You could of bought another $5 clip to get free shipping, yet you ended up buying 10 knives.

I have been using my seconds the last few days and I noticed the one blemish on the knife went away and the stuck blade on the stockman is now much easier to use. I have been thinking, just thinking of getting another batch. They are turning out better than I thought.

Post some pics and tell me what you honestly think about them, that will either deter me or send me over the edge.

Well I just got new bunch of RR knives ( not seconds) and can tell you this...

- The new gunstock pattern whittler, barlow and sowbelly with the updated shields are very nice.

- The new congress pattern with the slanted bolsters are also very nicely done.

- The sawcut bone stockman and congress are winners too.

- Got a deer slayer and coke bottle in sawcut bone, nicely made, but I'm not crazy about the patterns. They're both alot of knife for the money but too big for me.

- Also a tortoise sowbelly, lady's leg and barlow...all nice.

You can find most of these pictured on SMKW or Ebay. On ebay most are around $10 ( more or less)

My orange Copperhead had a very similar crack from pin to bolster. I'm thinking this guy sold me seconds. Could you describe the location of the "second" marking so I can look for signs of removal before sending it back to him? Thanks

These are the defects I was talking about.

Scratch on the main blade.

I got a jigged red bone canoe in the mail yesterday. Wow, night and day difference between this and the Copperhead. This knife is beautiful, unblemished, and friggin razor sharp out of the box. Not Bark River razor sharp, but it shaves and slices jesssst fine. I'll have some pics later.

I promised pics! I'm a little late. This knife is GREAT for 7 bucks.

My pictures suck, but you get the idea.

I think all their canoes are actually mini canoes. You have to get their Butter Bean to get a full size.

mmmm...looks like a standard set of e-bay pics to me...lol. One thing about RR, their colors are brilliantly bright.

Cool! Got my first RR fixed blade in the mail today. Not a real razor like the canoe, but it will shave hair. Looks pretty good too. Pics later.

Just got my seconds. I'll post pics in a little while. Both orders contained the same knives. 2 were Remingtons.

Alrighty.

2 Deerslayers. 1 red jigged bone and 1 brown jigged bone. Both have very strong springs (not in a bad way). The red has some kind of putty around the shield and pins that seems to scrape off with a fingernail. Nothing else wrong with it. I can't find anything wrong with the brown

2 Remington Doctors. Green smooth bone on both. One has the scales cracked on both sides around one pin. Not really noticeable unless you're looking for it. On the other, the dye didn't penetrate one scale consistently, so it's like green and white tie die. It actually looks pretty neat.

2 delrin Trappers. One has a bent liner, and a lazy spring on the clip blade. I can't find any flaw in the other.

2 Whittlers. One brown jigged bone. One red worm-grooved. The lines on the bolsters (?) on the brown are not straight. Can't find a flaw on the red.

2 Baby Sunfish in Abalone. Small gaps between the liners and scales on both.

Were they worth the price? Absolutely. All flaws are cosmetic, except for the Trapper with a lazy spring, and are not noticeable unless you're looking for them.

. . . The red has some kind of putty around the shield and pins that seems to scrape off with a fingernail . . .

(edits mine) That "putty" is some form of buffing rouge, I think. When I get any RR or SW brand knife, I usually soak/wash them in warm soapy water, and all that crud (grit in the joints, too) is usually washed out. I've got a couple of these "2nds" grab bags coming; really looking forward to seeing what I get, after reading everyone's comments here.

thx - cpr

Great looking knives, Kiahs. What are the odds of getting two identical grabbags?

I may have to order another, just because. Anybody ever see a canoe in a grabbag?

kiahs, your knives look pretty good. I am a little bummed you got the same order twice. Maybe it makes sense, ordering in two different orders. Shipping is free and you get a nylon sheath free with every order.

I also like every order comes with just traditional patterns. No high tech folders. I must admit I may be on the brink of ordering agian.

One thing about RR, their colors are brilliantly bright.

Not as bright as your cells are going to be after using these glow in the pocket colors all the while being exposed to China's cancer causing agent chemicals and so forth, as recently reported in the news. :D

I have never had an interest in the Baby Sunfish Pattern or Abalone. I just started playing with one of the ones I got, and I love this little thing. The Abolone is gorgeous. One side is purple and green swirls, and the other looks like an abstract painting of a mountain range surrounding a lake. The blades are unmarked except for the RR tang stamp and "Second". No steel tang stamps. No China mark or Anvil. I convexed the blades to a scary sharpness. Hairs run screaming. Anyway, thought I'd share. :D
