Not bad for less than $10!

gbuskirk, I'd trade the whittler or the onehand razor in my set for that Barlow, if you're interested.

Scattershot and others,

Please read the forum rules. Trades and exchanges are not to be discussed or conducted outside the proper areas of the bladeforums site.

Use email or PM if you want to contact a member with a specific request.

We have also provided a slipjoint swap area in this forum as a perk for our members.

Please heed these requests so that we don't have to begin issuing infractions for failure to follow the rules and the resultant loss of the slippie swap area.

Thank to all for their assistance with this.

I caught the tail end of the Knives Live webcast last night. They had the newest RR on for just a few seconds. A red jigged bone Scout. Anyone order one? I may have to pick one up if they're back Friday.

I saw the knife. It is not on the web-site yet. It was a really nice looking knife. Jigged red bone with two cuts in the bone in order to open the blades better. The small blade had a thumb assist. It was $12.99. It is what I call a Boy Scout pattern, with a punch blade, one large blade, a screw driver with can opener and a small blade. For some reason, it looked really nice to me. I never buy off of that show, but I like looking at the different knives they have. Before that was a Case seahorse with damascus blades and I think stag scales, really pretty.

I thought I saw a thumb stud on the small blade, but I just caught a glimpse, so I figured I was mistaken. Definitely gonna pick one up now. Hopefully they'll do them in stag and orange smooth bone. They've also been showing a marlin spike that I'm interested in getting. I think they only update the website once a month, so the new patterns should show up in May. Has anyone tried the Long Rifle fixed blades? They're supposed to be better steel than the slippies, but I don't remember what steel they use.

I have the Marlin Spike in smooth bone. It's a beast! BIg 4 1/2 closed 1 1/2 tall and 1/2 wide. The Marlin Spike is locked open and releases by the bail and is 3" long. The Blade is just under 3.0 to the bolster and has 2 3/4 of cutting edge. The blade spine is 1/8 thick. Like I said it's a beast and very nicely done.

I've seen the LR series, but I wanted to get a sawcut first and I haven't seen a LR knife for less than $10 yet. I don't want to ruin the RR honeymoon with financial issues yet. :D

I am very interested in the new scout though.

UPS man brought me the second lot of seconds, again all are very nice and I was happy to get another barlow pattern. All three of the jigged bone are great looking with very minute problems, some blade centering, pins standing proud, extremely minor gapping on one...I have seen worse from big brand companies. The Bone Stockman has some great looking scales on it, the large Coke Bottle is huge, about 9 1/2 open. The Barlow is very handsome with the only fault of having a paper thin gap 1/2 inch long between the liner and bolster on the back. The Trapper again has very nice bone and I haven't found why it was rejected. The Whittler in abalone again has extremely minor gapping...again I have seen worse in stores selling Case and such. The Large Coke bottle has already been claimed by a nephew and stock man will go to my brother...he likes white bone. The Barlow will go into EDC rotation with my other Barlows, the rest will be given away to friends and family over time.

Nice, absintheur. Looks like you got a great batch, again. I have a question on one of the kinves I got. It's a one-hand razor knife (?). I can't figure out the use of this blade. Surely, no one would shave with it, right? It's the white handled one second from the top in the pic with a funny looking blade.

It is also called a One Handed Man blade. The thought is you can hook it on your jean's pocket and open the blade and yes it does work...lol. I have one of the single blade versions and opening it in that manner is really pretty easy.

My take on Rough Rider. My first Rough rider was about 5 years ago and cost $4.99. It was a trapper and I was somewhat impressed with the knife. About 2 to 3 years ago I bought 2 sowbelly stockmans for $6.99 each and was a little dissapointed. I decided not to buy more, then I read some of our members talk positive things about them. In December of last year SMKW had a sale and I bought two knives for $4.99 and was really impressed. They seemed to have improved in overall quality.

Here is a close up of the stockman I got in December. It really was a step up in quality.

But, now the price seems to be going up to $8 to $15 for most knives and some are as high as $30. I am sure they are nice. But they are tending to go up in price as well as quality.

Now, I was the guy who talked about the seconds and I count 5 people who bought them. I am glad most of you were fairly pleased. I thought most of them looked pretty good. After some of you bought, I ordered one set of seconds and here they are.

I really like the abalonite whittler and the 5" lockback. The green knife is a Remington. The Remington has a big crack in the bone on the back side. The barlow has a small crack and some off color on the back side.

The brown sowbelly stockman has one blade that is a little deep and is harder to open. The 5" lock back has a small chip in the bone, but it is polished. The whittler has a small scuff on the edge of the abalonite. It took me awhile to find those 2 defects. Overall I am pleased, even with the Remington.

I am not big on the barlow pattern, I bought a camillus for about $4 10 years ago and got a Remington Bullet that looks like a grand daddy barlow. Then I got a Russell Barlow last week. So, I guess I have my fair share of barlows. I do like the feel of the Rough Rider barlow. I like the short thick handle.

I also feel somewhat responsible for us getting into trouble trying to trade knives, I think it was an innocent slip. I mean, these $4 seconds are probably not considered real knives by most of us.

Anyway, I like my seconds, but I think I am tapped out of buying Rough Riders, at least for awhile.

Nobody's in any trouble, Peter, for the trade offers, so don't worry about it.
We just need to remember to keep such activity confined to its proper place.
No blood, no harm, no foul.

We received another box of RRs yesterday at the office for everybody, and I had an Orange Bone Barlow and both a Single Blade Doctor's knife and a Peanut in yellow (delrin?). The Barlow and the Dr's Knife are very nice while the action on the main blade of the Peanut is a little funky. The Peanut's main blade spring isn't weak, but it doesn't walk and talk like the others do. Hopefully it will smooth up a bit with a scrub and oiling. The orange bone on the Barlow is very cool, and the Dr's Knife makes an interesting alternative to the Sodbuster Jr when you might want something just a little bigger than the Peanut or a small Jack of some sort. The corners of the bolsters on it were quite pointy, so I rounded them down just a little.

I got one of the Doctor 2 blade patterns in abalone, it makes for a nice social knife with a decent blade length for cutting steaks at the restaurant. Mine took just 6-7 strops on each side to bring it up to hair shaving sharpness. First Doctor's Pattern I have owned but I think there will be more in the future, been looking at one from Schatt & Morgan, I really the the spear point they use on some of theirs.

That orange does pop doesn't it...I got one of the small Sunfish in the orange...didn't last 2 days before I made a gift of it, my daughter loved the color...

Alot of nice looking pocket knives on this thread. I'm starting to see more and more RR's around in the hands of non-knife people who know they need a knife. Just goes to show, there's a very viable market for bargin priced cutlery. I've been impressed by the increase in fit and finish of them. Thier're learning.

I am drawn to the yellow peanut that Revolvergeek got. I find myself wondering if I dare...

I can't help it, I love yella peanuts.:o

They've been coming out with quite a few yellow scaled knives lately.

Some patterns are definitely nicer than others too. I'm partial to the Barlow, I've been carrying a RR "saw cut" Barlow to work for two weeks now.
