So I was looking into buying a knife. A good one. I came across this forum. I found a good knife for a good price. Tried to buy it and was turned down for being new. What good is a forum that sells things if new people cannot get a start in them? My money is as good as the next guys. I feel like because I am new and not a existing part of the forum, I am being excluded. That's not a good way to expand in my mind. Can someone explain to me why my hard earned green money is no good here? Ty.

Well, we haven’t yet established ourselves as part of the community. Online sales involving strangers, outside of the standard protections offered by eBay and other sites is inherently risky. The hesitation to sell to newly joined members stems from that risk.

If, after establishing ourselves as part of the community through participation in discussions, and ponying up for a paid membership, people will be more likely to deal with us.

I say “we” because I’m in the same boat.

Astronaut FX,
I can see your point. But unless I read things wrong, this forum invites people to come in and buy. Yet try to do so and you are excluded. That's not very encouraging for new member to want to pay for a membership.

I'm 39 years old. Just tried to buy my first real knife, other than a kabar, and felt like I was told I am too young to do so and my money is no good.

Was told it was because I am new and have no feedback. How do you get feedback if new people cannot purchase anything???? I'm truly confused. And been reading rules and etc for hours. Cannot figure out how to get feedback back without interacting in a sale or purchase.

It's not "the forum" that refused to sell to you, it was one guy. Stick around, join in on conversations, try buying from other people.

That one guy didn't want to run the risk of getting scammed by a stranger.

I never assume a seller will sell to me, I can only ask. I haven’t been turned down yet, but I could see why someone might be extra careful. The same reason some sellers on the bay will only sell to buyers with a good rating. Fear of being scammed—a customer claims he was sent a counterfeit, substitutes an actual counterfeit on the return, and the seller is out $$ with no recourse.

So not only am I looked down upon but I'm presumed a criminal as well? Wow. That's not a good way to bring people in. I guess I will just go elsewhere. It's obvious this is a closed community and not very welcoming to others.

Hell they can just say it never showed up and file a paypal dispute.

Take it however you want. This isn't an online store or auction site, this place is a community. It helps establish trust by actually participating in the community.

What kind of knife was it? A lot of sellers will sell to you, trust me, especially if there aren’t any other offers. Most aren’t rude, though, they just won’t respond until you have at least 1 or 2 positive transactions. The reason I ask what kind of knife is that there are sellers who have good prices who will sell to you, regardless of feedback. One thing is for sure, you would be lucky to find prices as low elsewhere!

As well as what the others have said, this forum isn't a "selling" forum. Do we have access to a knife exchange? Yeah(and its great), but first and foremost this is more a community than it is a place to sell or buy things. If you stick around and contribute other members(sellers) will see that.

What 39 year old sounds like this much of a baby? One person turned you down, it isnt against the rules to sell to new people, that one guy just wasnt comfortable with it. I'd gladly sell to new people, as long as they dont mess around too much.

Thanks to you all for your responses. I appreciate your time and efforts.

Welcome!

These two post kind of nail it. That experience was with one individual, so it's not really logical to judge a community of thousands based on that one situation.

Look at this from his perspective. You just joined yesterday. He has no idea if you are 18 or 80, brand new or collecting for years, a saint or a sinner etc. All he was doing was trying to exercise a little caution from a potential problem as most people that are new (presumably) don't jump straight in to purchase a $400+ knife.

If you like knives or anything related, then I would suggest sticking around, reading, sharing, and jumping back into the Exchange when you feel comfortable.

Just remember that the forum does not sell things here, individual people do. This place is great to buy, sell, and trade yet sometimes going through a retailer is a better option. Sometimes not.

Let your history develop past yesterday. Post in a few treads, read the rules and get a feel for the place and the exchange and you will have far less problems. This forum is open to the internet, so theoretically someone can see a knife for sale, join, rip the seller off and be gone the next day. Likely this is not you, but there is no way to be sure and few can afford to be wrong. To be fair there are old member rip offs also, but not many. Even if not a rip off dealing with new members can be more difficult. They may not know the rules or the etiquette of transacting deals properly and create transaction problems. I have no problem with dealing with new members, but a day or 2 is just too new. I would still deal with you being that new a member, but you would have to pay by USPS money order, which is probably not going to be to your liking-so it is easier if I just don't deal with you at this point-sorry, but sometimes experience says caution is only reasonable.
On the reverse side the more you know about the sellers the safer the transaction will be for you

One person rudely refused to deal with me when I was new, I refuse to deal with him now. OP, consider buying a membership, that'll help. Also, when you do buy from someone, leave them feedback and ask that they leave some for. And participate, let people see you as more than just someone over in the Exchange.
