Not sure what to think of Fallkniven...

Hey guys,

I have an F1 on its way here and Im obviously excited but a little apprehensive as well. I know its a solid knife and well loved by many, but Ive also heard a lot about chipping, broken tips, and some other off putting occurrences. It seems really weird to me that they only offer a 2 year limited warranty if theyre so sure they make the best and strongest knives in the world, and the contradictions on their product descriptions compared to their warranty policy are numerous.
How can they describe the S1 as a forest knife capable of chopping and splitting wood, then in the warranty paragraph say that the warranty only covers knife usage such as cutting! and they specifically say NO CHOPPING! Same for the F1, its an alleged pilot survival knife that apparently is only made for cheese and crackers cuz if you break it in any survival tasks youre s.o.l. Just seems weird to me, Ive read a couple of threads where guys did get replacements but they never specified how long they owned the knives.

Im not a knife abuser but I like options, and Fallkniven seems to be limiting those options with unrealistic policies on knife abuse.

That is all.

there's a big difference between cutting cheese and chopping.

what exactly is a survival task?

You know what I mean dude, anything other than slicing. Small scale chopping , splitting a wrist thick log for kindling , or baton chopping through something reasonable . I'm not talking seasoned pine knots buy I am talking about not babying a 160$ survival knife . People might snicker at that one but 160$ is expensive enough for a knife IMO, its no busse price and I know customs go into the thousands but, you know .

Neither the S1 nor the F1 are good choppers - not enough weight. Nor can I find Fallkniven describing either knife as a chopper.

S1 The Forest Knife is probably the best hunting and fishing knife ever made. Its sturdy blade made of the new extremely strong stainless laminate VG10 custom steel is convex grounded for extra strong cutting power with no risk for edge breakage. The modified clippoint design works well for penetrating purposes, the long curved edge is ideal for skinning. The blade is long enough for lighter chopping and won´t break, it´s full 5 mm (0.2") thick!

Mod. F1 is a handy knife and is tremendously versatile. The safe, pleasant grip together with a very hard yet tough laminated steel, makes the knife very useful for all kind of daily work but also demanding tasks. You can choose from two kinds of sheaths - an all-covering pouch type, which safely houses the entire knife or an extremely tough double-safety, one hand operated zytel sheath.

The smaller F1 can be batoned just fine. I have used an F1 for 8 years with no problems.

Can you link to Fallkniven's description of it's warranty? I found this:
Warranty We offer a two-year guarantee covering material and manufacturing defects, i.e. defects that arise during manufacture but are not discovered until the knife is in use. A defect is generally discovered within half a year, not after several years. We repair or replace the knife. The guarantee is not valid if the knife has been used incorrectly — the knife is a precision cutting implement and is not to be used for levering or prising. Discolouring caused by blood, salt-water or other corrosive substances is not covered by the guarantee, neither are broken blade points. The sheath will be replaced if faults in the original manufacturing are found. Contact Fällkniven AB Granatvägen 8 96143 BODEN SWEDEN

While I'm a bit partial to more cutting oriented knives I was under the impression that Fallknivens were reasonably tough and that Noss guy did a D dest with them and was favorably impressed. All in all for being so sharp and taking into consideration the ability to do finer task as well as those more abusive the Falknivens are a pretty good compromise. While no super steel by any stretch VG-10 is a favorite of mine and a good middle ground for a fixed blade knife IMO.

I was curious about that too. I see no "NO CHOPPING" anywhere. I do see this on their website....

Our knives are designed to serve as standard knives under normal
conditions, but stand much more than everyday use normally
demands if you are suddenly forced to rely upon the strength, edge
retention and design of the knife. These knives are the result of a
superoptimized combination of a high-end steel (VG10) and an
accomplished technical, purposeful, ergonomic design.

and this about the A1...

Model A1 is a semi-large all-purpose knife for heavy duty use. The powerful blade is made of extremely hard yet tough laminated VG10 steel and will withstand the stress of hard use. The knife is superb to chop with, but also works very well with daily tasks, thanks to the ergonomic grip. The full tang goes entirely through the handle, so you can strike the end of it without breaking the grip. The sturdy black zytel sheath allows you to fasten the knife on your belt or your pack - even upside down. Model A1 is a water repelling concept which works just as well in extreme cold as in stifling heat.

Fallkniven makes good knives. I wouldn't worry about the tip because on youtube it shows a guy digging into a tree stump with just the tip and it made it out fine. The warranty is kind of a moot point in a survival situation. Most likely you can't run to the post office and mail it in for repair because you're stuck in the woods or where ever.

Check out Bark River, their Bravo 1 is similar to the F1 and they have a better warranty and configurations.

Ok bring on the snark attack. I read specifically on the Fallkniven website than the warranty does not cover chopping or the tip breaking off, I'm on my phone right now and either they tool down the warranty tab or its not optimized for mobile use cuz I can't find a damn thing. I know a warranty doesn't help in the situation, which none of us will likely ever be in, I just mean if I split a log and it splits my knife I want a new one . Seems like every other company will oblige and when I get home ill show you guys where fally said they wouldn't .

Really? Would you like to back that statement up with fact?

I don't see how asking you to state fact is a "snark attack."

Not worried just confused, and the confusion continues. For the past week there has been a warranty tab at the top of the fallkniven page, it is no longer there. Marcinek, if you don't see how you sound rude in BOTH posts, I'm not going to explain manners to you. Im not bashing fallkniven or anything , I want one, I bought one, its coming. I was simply stating how weird their warranty is givien the intended function of the knives. I'm not some super noob that needs everything explained to me, I know a 3.8 inch blade isn't a chopper, I have a bk9 and a small forest axe for that. Whetrock, what is a super steel then? I always thought well made high carbon stainless steels fall in the category ie vg10 or s30v. Or is it whatever people decide is super and what is no longer in style gets taken off the list. Maybe marcinek can post some smart ass answer explaining it to stupid knife hater me.

My apologies.

Would you please show me in the Fallkniven warranty where it says "NO CHOPPING"?

Thank you in advance.

By the way, if you would like to see the Fallkniven warranty, it can be found by downloading the catalog.

Thanks Marcy, see how fun being polite can be. Let's all hug and spin in a field of sunflowers, oops I'm high again.

I wouldn't worry about much. I've beaten my F1,S1,A1's for years with not problems. Choppers? Not really. I bring bigger knives for that which have the weight. As far as chipping goes , no issues there either. If you are worried about that and want a tougher edge , just sharpen it some to get into the steel a little deeper than the razor factory edge. Still whittles hair and batons fine.

You have an excellent knife on the way and your money was well spent.

I dont think you need to worry about their warranty... they are great knives and extremely durable. I am pretty sure they would give you a new knife if you broke it chopping or doing something along those lines. They have a strict warranty yes but then again you are never going to really need it.

Yeah they have all this data on vg10 breakage on the site, I figured the warranty is based on the fact that they know just how strong these knives are and if you broke one, its safe to say you broke the rules as well.

Really sucks that I went off on a rant the same day they take what Im referring to off the site... Maybe they changed the policy, I guess I feel better.

If you're worried about breaking a knife and want a better warranty go for an ESEE, Becker or Bussekin, or another company that offers a lifetime warranty.

Wanted small, stainless, no choil, lefty sheath, and affordable. I think anyone can agree F1 is the best choice with those specs.
