Nov. New York Custom Knife Show

Never thought of a striper falling into the moo moo cow category especially sine you guys actually have cow sized tuna up there this time of year.;)

Sure, Tuna is great if you have $BUCKS$ and time. Still, for a guy who doesn't want to spend a lot of money, you can easily get into some big stripers for an afternoon of fun.

If I want the custom stuff its all over the web too. Who goes to knife shows just to buy knives? Yes, I know the only reason you go to shows is to sell custom (as defined by you) knives but I'm not and never will be your type of customer.

Having Sal Glesser, Les DeAsis, Gary Fadden, Lynn Thompson and Mike Fuller at the show pulled people in the door. Foot traffic draws more knifemakers. Ever notice practically how few of the Oregon, Montana or the European makers are at the show anymore? When is the last time you talked to Bill Bagwell at the show? I don't know anything about why Chris Reeve stopped coming to the show but I'm guessing there are two sides to that story.

Hi Sidehill,

Which custom knives do Sal, Gary, Les, Lynn and Mike make? By anyone's definition..they are factory knives not custom knives. As such these factories shouldn't be set up at the custom shows. You can find these knives at every local gun show in the country.

If there is such a demand for these factories at shows...makes you wonder why Blade Show West closed its doors.

Actually I go to shows to buy, sell and trade knives. You are right it is a business for me. I make no apologies for that. I really enjoy shows...love talking knives, trends, makers, materials, etc. To me everything outside the show is superfluous. Im there for the show...whether I have set up or not.

As for you never being my customer...that ok...I'll be able to sleep tonight. :D

When I want to see the "sights" I take a vacation.

Last time I talked with Bill was at the Blade Show about 25 years ago. So nothing recently. Did he used to attend the NY Shows is that why you asked? Why did he stop coming? Does he even attend shows?

I suspect there are not a lot of makers from Oregon and Montana at the NY shows...for the same or similar reason(s) there are not a lot of NY and NJ Makers attending the Oregon and Montana shows.

Lots of European makers at the East Coast Custom show. I suspect a lot of the European makers attending shows in the US has slowed this year, given the state of the Euro. Also, they have some exceptional custom knife shows in France, Germany, Italy, Belgium and a few other countries over there. Perhaps given the hassles of traveling with knives to foreign countries (and shipping them is no guarantee). They have decided to stay closer to home...speak the language and don't have to worry about exchange rates???

The November show has a decidedly "tactical" feel to the show. Just as the February show has more of an "art" feel to that show.

There are a myriad of things that insure shows cannot be all things to all people.

BTW what is your real name. Always like to know who I am talking to.

Hi Les,

it costs a small fortune to set up at a show in the USA if you're coming from Europe. Also, for EU citizens, there's a good bit of paperwork involved if they declare the trip as "business" for US Customs vs. "vacation." And if the suitcase is full of knives and materials relating to a trade show... da dadum dum daaa! (That was Dragnet music!) One EU Maker got sent back at the US border a few years ago when he said "busines" without having obtained the needed visa beforehand...

The least expensive flights from Europe to the USA are usually direct into one of the NY/NJ airports which makes shows in that area attractive and there's always the allure of hanging a few days onto the trip and promising the significant other a chance at "seeing the City," doing some shopping at Bergdorf's and REALLY writing some red ink on the "business trip!" :D

My good friend Mr. Gouger brings up some good points, and I understand them.

I also understand that many of the things that we take for granted or are simply part of our everyday lives are under seige through the devious machinations of Mayor Bloomberg and District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.

I have given NYC up to the powers that control it....and simply put, it is a dangerous unclean place not fit for those who love the United States...I say this as a former resident of NY; Herkimer when I was young, New Hartford when a bit older, finally Mt. Kisco and Croton-on-Hudson.

So....there is NO sense in trying to make it go in NYC when the income and freedom of the attending knifemakers and collectors is on the line. Steve D'lack made some very tough decisions, and fwiw, Gotham is only 4 miles away....you can walk there if you want.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Good grief - tell me I read that wrong. Some peeps here are acting like it's the end of the world because the show is moving...... 4 miles from where it was? Youkiddinme??

Roger

Hi Roger,

LOL...I have no idea what a cab costs to Manhattan...I can't imagine it is any more than $20.

So the $180 a night you are saving on the hotel...will more than cover that and dinner at Peter Luger's!

More to the point I applaud Steve for making this move as quickly as he did.

I know makers who were considering dropping the show due to concerns about having their knives confiscated.

Really, some complaining about a show moving 4 miles, some complaining about the heat in San Antonio for the ABS show.
Sounds like some folks look for excuses not to go to shows.

^There's AC in the airport, the cab, the hotel, the show room just as there was heat in the airport, the cab, the hotel and the show room in Reno when the ABS show was there and it was 20 degrees and snow outside.

My point is that anyone who uses heat or cold as a reason not to attend a show, probably just doesn't want to attend the show. Same as anyone who will not attend the NY show because it's moved to NJ.

I do believe San Antonio ABS Show moving to January is a very good move though. There's three shows the third weekend in August.
San Antonio, Denver and Montana. January is probably the best month to add a forged show show. http://www.customknifecollectorsassociation.com/Events.html

If a person doesn't want to go to this show in NJ, just wait a couple months and go to
the ECCKS. Or maybe it's moving also?

BTW, ECCKS (Feb show) was started in Meadowlands, not this one (Nov show).

That makes more sense. I was wondering how a NEW YORK show would be started in the Meadowlands.

I'll be there with 2 tables. One for our forged knives and a second one for my Winkler Knives II line.

Back when the East Coast Knife Show was in the Meadowlands it was always a good show. Hopefully this move will be a good thing.

Daniel

I apologize, I knew it was the same promoter and always thought of them in that order. Sorry for any confusion that I might have added to this fine thread. Screw NYC (for their knife laws)!!!

See you all in The Meadowlands regardless. The more the merrier, let us ALL work on getting the number of makers back up to what it once was and I sincerely hope that this move accomplishes that.

Ron LaBella

You guys are telling me you that you don't want to check out the splendor that is Secauscus in November? :D

Seriously though, I go to shows for the knives and maybe the get toghethers afterwards. As far as I'm concerned my sightseeing is all done at the show.

I don't see anyone acting as though the world is going to end.
The decision to move the show, considering the political climate, was a sound one.

There are those that don't like the decision.

There are those that don't want to make the 'schlepp' to Jersey.

To each his own.

I wish you all the best of luck, a good time and much success.

I'll also apologize for kidding around with Ed, not knowing that the rest didn't either get it or realize that I was kidding.

But I'm still not going...
For my own reasons... Jersey being only a small one of many.
Maybe next year.

Not everyone lives at the show. Some people go out and see local attractions. Some people may even have to, gasp, work outside in the heat or cold.

My point is that anyone who uses heat or cold as a reason not to attend a show, probably just doesn't want to attend the show.
Your point may have merit when looking through rose colored glasses. However, ignoring the fact that some knife collectors consider the weather to be a factor is being willfully obtuse.

Hi Chuck,

Obtuseness aside, Kevin makes a good point. Heat and Cold can be dealt with.

If you are going to the ABS Show in Texas in August...it is going to be hot...plan accordingly.

If you want to see the sights...try to take them in at night or early in the morning when it is cooler.

As someone who primarily attends shows to set up at them...I know I check the weather to try and figure out how it will affect the show.

Lots of things affect the show. Shows in late October/early November may fall on the opening day of deer season or some other season. I used to do a show in Mt. Vernon IL. For two years in a row the show was the same weekend as the opening of deer season...had a huge impact on the show. As it was a smaller very regional show.

I have found that actually the nicer the day....the fewer "casual" collectors will attend the show. Friday is usually the exception to weather...but give me a cold rainy Saturday every time...that I am in the show. :D

The majority of people I sell to are at shows for basically two reasons...the knives and the camaraderie. During my seminars at the Blade Show I always welcome people to the "Period of Enlightenment". As is at a show that others understand what is you find desirable about the show and why you are there. Generally this is not something our friends and loved ones comprehend.

True there will be people who want to see a play in NYC as there are people who want to see the Alamo in San Antonio. However, those can be be done after the show. As such the show and other activities are not mutually exclusive.

In this case the show was not moved to spite those who wished to take in the night life of Manhattan. It was done in fact to remove the table holders and the clients from the grasp of an over litigious DA.

Whether you agree or not...Steve did the right thing.

Imagine the posts after the show if it had stayed in Manhattan and the show was raided, knives were confiscated and fines were levied.

Some how moving 4 miles to keep that from happening in the big scheme of things is really no big deal.

I told D'Lack if we're going to move the show out of NY in February I'd like to see it go to South Beach, FL. It's hard for me to imagine anything bad about that!! :)

Chuck, not rose colored glasses or obtuse and I didn't say the weather wasn't a factor, just that I have a hard time seeing how someone (in OK health) who really wants to attend a particular knife show would let 20 degree or 100 degree temperatures stop them considering the mass availability of climate control.
I think generally speaking, folks will put up with a little inconvenience and/or even a little discomfort to do something they really want to do. Just got back from a trip to the outer banks with my daughters a few hours ago. Boy it was HOT, but we sure enjoyed it.

I could go for that.

I would love that, but bear in mind that we already have the Miami boat show in February.

The show is coming up fast. I will be setup there as I have for the past three years. Expect my Gallery shortly afterwards.

Please, please, PLEASE come by and say hello. :) My wife Susan will be there to help me and will stop you in your tracks first. Secret password: Your forum name. ;)

BTW, I understand I'll be in the main show hall, well off to the side. We'll be hard to miss with the strobes flashing all day and night...
