Nov. New York Custom Knife Show

Another thread on the same topic, maybe we can get a merge?
This is a family forum, Aldo. Best to keep those scary faces in private... ;) YIKES!

CYA there!

I can't wait to be back in NJ. Last time I was at a show there, my wife was 9 months pregnant with my oldest son. That was 17 years ago!

Knifemakers, knives, dealers, photographers. Everything you need for a great weekend!

So far, so good. LOTS of activity and excitement, and the attendance seems to be at least or more than I recall.

The Crowne Plaza Secaucus is a new, spacious, modern, and well lit venue. Perfect.

I'm set up in the show hall, off to the far corner, and it works for me. Lots of onlookers, and so far lots of projects I've captured.

CYA later....

On Friday the show was VERY BUSY. It was great to see so many people walking around the show.

An incredible selection of knives in the room.

The show was again busy on Saturday. Steve D'Lack told me there had been more people through the door by noon Saturday...then all 3 days last year.

The hotel was very nice. The ballroom was excellent. The bar Restaurant was also excellent.

After paying the prices in NYC...the room rate and food were an incredible savings.

Given what has been happening attendance wise, this was a killer show!

Personally I had a very good show. Bought more than I sold. What else is new. LOL

I would like to than Ron LaBella and Aldo "The Steel Baron of NJ" for their exceptional hospitality. These guys sure do know how to pick places to eat!

Another thank you to RJ Martin, he was set up next to me at the show. Him being there made the one aspect of the show that sucked...bearable.

Thank you Ron, Aldo and RJ.

Les, was good to see you for that brief one second and thanks for letting me play with the folder.

Also good to see you Coop and Rob.

I payed extra attention to JWS and Lambert tac folders due to the recent threads.

I also had a VERY good show. It was a pleasure actually being IN the show hall (off in the corner), yet feeling the energy. The exposure must have helped also.

The only downside was the consistent interruptions from well-meaning attendees, who were curious what I was doing and then what camera, what lens, what they have been using, old film stories, etc.... Rinse and repeat. ;)

The benefit was how many makers, dealers, and collectors I saw, that I may not have enjoyed conversation with. Yes: RJ, Les, Neil from TNK (Best US show EVAR!), Kirby, JWS, and Daniel Winkler were all within hailing (swearing?) distance. :D

I will have images started in a fresh thread later this week.

As Les has allowed, Steve Dlack was VERY pleased with the attendance, and that bodes well for everyone.

Custom Knives = Alive and well in NJ. So sorry that a few NYC attendees could not make it, but overall, it worked out for the better.

Finally, a show report that's actually very positive in terms of attendance and sales (D'Lack's comments). Outstanding!

Here's hoping D'Lack has the same kind of comments in April, at Santa Barbara. Would love to see that show become a real winner!

Hi Bob,

Steve told me he was going to cancel the Santa Barbara show.

He is looking at another location to start a show.

He prefers doing the show every year as opposed to every other year.

I really enjoyed this show!

I enjoyed driving there instead of taking the train, being able to get in a car and go to dinner. Eating at killer restaurants where the entrees cost less than the gratuity would in NYC!

Being able to have good food, reasonably priced, right in the hotel. Being in a room with good lighting, that was rectangular in shape (it makes a difference!). Saving $700-800 on travel and lodging. That's enjoyable!

I think the best thing was that the customers seemed more relaxed. Many were there for multiple days, which I think was simply because it was much easier for them to come and go. So I got to enjoy them longer. I had in-depth conversations, some that turned into dinner conversations with several really cool people I had never had the chance to get to know-Aldo Bruno, Rio, Shawn Knowles, Henvi, Ron Labella and a host of other knife enthusiasts/forumites/dealers.

I even got to have an actual conversation with Coop!

Sales were excellent for many, which was really nice to see. I will be back next year, for sure.

Les-

Such is life. I hope he finds a good slot somewhere. There goes an easy drive!
