Now Casting: Forged in Fire

No way.

I don't forge. Never will. My neighbors like me and I'm trying to keep it that way.

(and I refuse to fly anywhere or go anyplace that won't allow me to be armed)

This hits on the one major reason I watch this show....half heartedly. Actual real modern knives are simply not made this way...they're almost all stock reduction, because the stock is so clean & high performing compared to...well, esp. compared to the crap steel they work with on the show. Most of the steels I prefer are not even forgeable, if you wanted to....& the rest of the steels I dig are forgeable, but the act of forging almost always produces a weaker/inferior knife than one made using stock reduction. I want to see a show about a real custom knife maker like Fiddleback Forge or the like. And I know, I know...this show is popular not because knife nuts like us watch it, but because of the fire & pounding & reality show/game show formula is at play, & a broader audience is drawn in - I've been a Wil Willis fan since he did that show where it was him vs. a group of bad guys though - bring that show back!!

When I clicked the title I thought you meant, you know casting

Good to see it's going to continue

As Charlie Mike notes it's forged blades only. On one recent show one of the competitor's was disqualified when he did a stock removal blade out of a lawn mower blade.

I would also suggest this is best for younger makers trying to demonstrate their skills.

I'm not sure the time away from making blades on long long backlog list is worth the $ 10,000 before taxes for an established maker.

THANK YOU!! I forgot to mention the 2nd most frequesnt thing that my lovely Wife makes fun of me for yelling at the TV screen while I'm watching this show....the $10,000 prize??!?? $10K. $10K? $10K?? And like Murindo mentions, that's of course not even what the winner gets...he gets $5-$6K. This prize really makes zero sense to me...the show would be more interesting if these guys were fighting some actual money...at the very very least the prize should be $50K...but I think it should be $100,000. That way, it sounds impressive to the viewers, ratings go up, they get better/more interested contestants, and the winners walk away with $55-60K, and that's money that can actually make a difference in their lives short term at least...ya, I really cannot believe they haven't raised the prize amount....I find it embarrassing for the network really.

I was sent that flyer and considering it

Awesome! Sarah, is there any way that you could recommend to the other producers etc. in charge of such things that they begin showing the Last Names of the contestants written on the screen while they're giving their introduction? I know it's one thing many of us here have been wanting to see for a while now! :) Can't wait to watch season 3!

Hi Sarah you could probably build 5 seasons from all of the great bladesmiths with awesome and often quirky personalities on the forum! Good luck and am looking forward to seeing future episodes!

I need Stacy A. to adopt me so I can get my resident status and be eligible for the show.

Actually, a Canadian version is in the works. Many Canuckian makers have been through the interview process, already.

Something tells me that the judges etc and the network are sucking all of the money out of the show..... ;)

No $10K wouldn't really be worth the makers time, hell some of the stuff they have to make would be worth more than they would clear if they won, a lot more.....

I would say $50K would be much more like it.

I fully appreciate and agree with the last part. However, I'd love to see them try and handle you describing the measurements and the intended use the way you do in your own videos. That would be a riot.

It was good enough to have Murray Carter participate .

That sounds good, but somehow I think they will end up messing with it to the point of it being unwatchable.

How would adding maple syrup to the show mess it up? They just pour some on each pig they test a blade on!

Actually, if Sarah is reading, how do I get them to use my forges on the show?

I'd like to watch CM on that show also, but there would be a lot of Bleep!! Bleep! %#&@*... this fn blade. :D So far he has the most votes.

Yup. You should've heard how I spoke when I was in the Army!

Something tells me the prize money is only a small part of it. I'm guessing the hope is that they make a good impression on the show's audience and people look up th knife makers and then put in orders. You know, free, visible, national advertising.

Of course there's always the risk of them editing things to make you look incompetent and not really having a fair opportunity to showcase your skills, in which case you look like an idjit on national TV.

If they had a show called "Grinding Steel Into Something Resembling a Half-Descent Knife" I would be all over it. At this point I don't have nearly enough forge experience. :-) I do look forward to seeing many other BladeForum members next season though. I enjoy it greatly!
