Now Casting: Forged in Fire

Oh boy, you just stepped into a hornets nest :)

I think he's out of his element. Because, a statement of that nature would be considered pretty darn ignorant by most of us in shoptalk...
Maybe he should ask Andy at Fiddleback Forge what he thinks of my crappy, outdated forged work.

I love crappy outdated forge work, yours is especially nice. I am SO tempted to put in for the show, maybe I'm weird but I love being on camera. Onley camera work I ever done was filming my self for YouTube. but I think what holds me back is IF and that's a big if I made it to the last round I would get somthing that I could not phicaly make with my shop. Like a shield or huge battle axe. All my tools are tailered around small to med size blades. I have often wondered if thy Taylor the final chalanges to the skills of the finalists. Thy just happen to have two guys make it to the end that have done armor befor when thy asked for the shield.

Well, I'll jump in with my 2c. I've put in to be on the show for next season. I've gotten a couple of interviews and am waiting for an answer. I think I have about a 50/50 shot. I'm not an expert but I've been forging/grinding/making knives since 2001 (off and on) and I feel like I have enough experience not to make a total idiot out of myself. I think we can all agree that it's not the most experienced or talented guy that always wins the show and I think it's a good thing for the knife making community for them to involve a mixture of professionals with amateur makers. I get the distinct feeling from them that they do not want to put people on the show who would embarrass themselves (or the show) but they definitely seem to be interested in an eclectic mix of skill levels and character.

What about your plow to sword deal?

Very true, I just pulled that blade out and weighed it and the blade is 2lb 4oz so not bad. Every time I watch the show I am eyeballing the mill in the background. I wonder if it can be used, considering I'm a machinist by trade I would sure feel at home on it. Just remember it's forged in fire not grind in fire, lol facepalm. Pore kid, watching him grind his knife I'm yelling at the tv, NOOOOOOOO forge it forge it.

Granted, it was technically a good idea. When the show first came out I remember Don saying he would jusy pound something flat then grind the whole thing out.

I think CM was born for this. If he could get over the flight I think he'd be awesome. Like Greenberg Woods said, he could just pound out a flat bar then grind the sucker.

Tell me you wouldn't watch that. He's a rockstar. :D

Something tells me that the judges etc and the network are sucking all of the money out of the show..... ;)

No $10K wouldn't really be worth the makers time, hell some of the stuff they have to make would be worth more than they would clear if they won, a lot more.....

I would say $50K would be much more like it.

Turf that Will Willis and up the prize money

You're right, that's just awful

Another outdated crappy knifemaker here. Making inferior knives with fire and a hammer.

Here Chuck, is one of your embarrassingly terrible knives... I guess neither of us can get the hang of working with modern steels, good thing we are going the way of the dinosaur.

I think whoever said "put Jesse James on there" is right. Now there's a REAL metalworker, surely he could make a better knife than any of us, and he's so charismatic, to boot!

Do it!
