I'm disappointed in that Old Physics has basically asked twice for reasons to have a Bob and no one bothered to answer him.
I split the Bob into two categories, the Wilderness Bob and the Urban Bob. Most folks get caught up in the Wilderness Bob as it is alot more fun to think about that sort survival...you vs. Mother Nature.
Both Bobs can have a lot of overlap, but also should have a different focus. The Wild Bob is your longer term mono i mono survival, and the Urban Bob is your Oh noz I'm stuck in a Katrina style Hurricane and will have to flee the area.
I have to believe most of the folks here would not hang tough in the path of an on going storm but especially in the Mid West, there are other threats that will hit with much less warning. Tornadoes and Earth Quakes for example.
The Urban Bob should be stuff you need when your house is/was crushed by the hand of God and you are homeless. Imagine if you had to live in the Superdome for a week, what would you need? A battle mistress won't do much good and might get confiscated or stolen. A precharged calling card would be very important, along with some cash. Hidden/encoded information regarding your bank accounts; home owners insurance etc. Important phone numbers; medical/prescription insurance information etc. a list of all your medications/doses/directions. Dr Names and phone numbers. After Katrina our pharmacy sent truck loads of drugs and pharmacists to help out. But you have to know what you need. Trade goods to obtain what you need or bribe your way into or out certain situations etc. for example a bus ride outta there, an extra bowl of gruel for junior., more blankets.
Does that help OP any?
It does!
I clearly need to think about the Urban BOB, at the very least.
Much better to be prepared than sorry.
Great Response! Didn't even think of two distinct BOBs like that.I'm disappointed in that Old Physics has basically asked twice for reasons to have a Bob and no one bothered to answer him.

I have just started collecting items for my BOB but I'm still looking for a good pack. Anybody have experience with Eberlestock Gunslinger Pack? I think it would be kind of nice to be able to slide a rifle into it and if its small enough it would totally disappear.

Get a kit
Plan to store enough supplies to last everyone in your
household for at least three days.
1) Water. Have at least one gallon per person per day.
2) Food. Pack nonperishable, high-protein items, including
energy bars, ready-to-eat canned food and food you enjoy.
3) Flashlight. Include extra batteries.
4) First-aid kit.
5) Medications. Prescription and nonprescription.
6) Battery-operated radio. Include extra batteries.
7) Tools. Wrench, manual can opener, screwdriver, hammer,
pliers, knife, duct tape, plastic sheeting and garbage bags.
8) Clothing. Provide a change of clothes for everyone,
including hats, sturdy shoes and gloves.
9) Personal items. Eyeglasses or contact lenses and
solution; copies of important papers, including
birth certifi cates.
10) Sanitary supplies. Toilet paper, feminine supplies,
disinfecting bleach.
11) Cash and coins.
12) Emergency numbers.
13) Pet supplies.
14) Map. Mark evacuation routes on a local area map.
I had not thought about important papers, thanks for that!
I keep a small BOB in my truck, a bigger on in an Alice Pack in the family rig and I have 3 different setups on my property for specific situations (Natural Disaster and such). Then I have my personal outdoors BOB in a Maxped Pygmy Falcon that evolves constantly and gets the most experimentation. This is all in addition to my food and water storage.
I still feel a lack of preparedness.![]()
I'm an advocate of BOBs and preparation. My vehicle and home both have sizeable, specially-packed medical kits in addition to survival kits, but I've been a paramedic/nurse for nearly 30 years, so you can guess my focus would be on medical supplies. Here in my little corner of the Southwest, water is almost always a problem, so my field pack is a hydration model instead of the Pygmy Falcon or similar item. Some thought in where you live might turn up similar "problem" areas that you might want to consider when setting up your gear.
And of course I have a hip flask of "medicinal" brandy (or Scotch kool aid) wherever I can get away with it!!![]()
I stumbled on a Prac Tac thread that made me think of this conversation OP.
