Now THAT'S one Wicked Laser

18 + really sounds like a good idea for this thing. Hell i'm sixteen and i'd still back that. Way too many idiots around at my age. Although it does sound incredible, I like the .50 BMG analogy.
Aussies will never get it unless they're an astronomer, anything past 1mW is restricted for import.

I was thinking man I really need that. Then I thought about that movie A Christmas story "you will shoot your eye out kid"

Would a laser like this be suitable for burning designs into smooth wood surfaces? Would the reflections from doing this kind of work be dangerous with or w/o eye protection?

Yes, and yes. Blu Ray (405nM or violet,) might work better if your wood is lighter in color. 200 - 300 mW should work nicely.

Also, the laser would have to be focused to a fine point to burn efficiently. Most hobbyist builds have this capability.

EDIT - Just did this my 250mw Blu Ray. Yes, my writing sucks.

EDIT 2 - The 445nM lasers are multimode, meaning that there are multiple emitting surfaces. Without corrective optics, the spot will be more akin to a thin line, which might not good for precise burning. Please bear in mind, I haven't played with one personally. The glasses and kit are on the way, and I'll post back when I have more info.

Wow, that is VERY cool! I've got a relatively high powered green laser from Wicked that we use with the dog (avoiding the eyes) and generally goofing around lighting matches and popping balloons. Boy, the trouble you could get into with that 1W laser is mind boggling. I wouldn't even want one for fear of messing up for a fraction of a second and blinding myself or someone else. Nevertheless, it's cool as heck.

Im kind of sickened. What for do you need that kind of thing anyway? Definitely the kind of stuff that should require permit.

Think about all the ways you can be burned, blinded, or otherwise maimed. Think about all the chemicals under your kitchen sink. Think about the gas you just bought free and clear; no permit, no ID, no need to even see the clerk if you pay at the pump.

Stop feeling. Start thinking.

You too, Raccoon.

As cool as this is, there are far too many "dude look at this thing" kinda guys out there who can pick this up and blind everybody (as everyone else so far has basically said). although, the design is awesome and i would get a laser that has similar functionality and design but just less powerful...you know, when it CAN'T BLIND ME!

I am thinking. I am thinking some idiot gets his hands on those.
Only chemicals under my sink is empty beer bottles. :D
And I don't use gas.

All I can say is wow. This thing is real? I mean I can actually purchase a laser thats handheld with this kind of capability? At first I am thinking "DAMN thats awesome" however now I am not sure I'd even want one as I could never forgive myself if someone I love was hurt by it.

Proud2Deviate I can see where your coming from. I would love to own this just to have more than anything else. I dont know about it being a self defense tool though. Very torn on this as it really is alot of power in an what appears to everyone else to look like a flashlight. I doubt people would take it seriously if I told them and showed them.

Dang! I had a 50mw green laser, but it scared the hell out of me and I sold it. Even shining it on a black surface like electrical tape cause me eye problems.

It sounds like fun though. :D Just be careful with it.;)

I used a ~150mW blue laser to burn some wooden beads for lanyards. I might actually consider purchasing this one.

The gadgety part of me is considering buying one before they become banned for sale without a permit or liscense of some sort, and they will.

It is inevitable that some maroon , somewhere is going to do something naughty and unwise with it , the second that happens legislation soon follows.

That said, I too would be apprehensive of it's power. It is not a light saber , and I think it is impossible at this point to make anything close ( a handheld laser device that makes a beam about 3-4 in length only , strong enough to decapitate etc... ).

As a gun owner , NRA member and 2nd Amendment supporter , I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not.... firearms are a whole different bag of beans than something this destructive and anonymous.

Now all that said.... It is freakin cool :)

Screw lightsabers. This is a nice fat step toward pulse-rifles.

I'm tempted to scoop one of these up before they become outlawed.

Either one of these, or a Derringer... Hmmm... Actually a tough choice...
