Now THAT'S one Wicked Laser

I remember reading something about Customs seizing these things on import, thus hosing you out of your money. Import laws on lasers over 5 mW or something...

That's for stuff that doesn't meet FDA regs.

On a side note, I just got my 445nM build going. Due to a faulty driver, I'm only able to supply it with 263mA, so it's outputting 85mW. It's really quite nice at this power; very bright pretty blue and a visible beam in a lighted room. I might have to build two of these, low power and high.

It seems that they've taken note of safety concerns:

Due to the overwhelming popularity and media coverage of the S3
Arctic laser, we are implementing an electronic switch upgrade to
the laser for all customers, free of charge. This upgrade will
enable the following functional and safety features on your S3
Arctic laser:

1) Adjustable Power Mode : Low power and high power modes are now
selectable. Laser's default power mode is low power mode.

2) Adjustable Wave Mode : Pulse mode and constant wave modes are
now selectable. Laser's default wave mode is pulse mode.

3) Secure Lock/Unlock Mode : The laser can now be locked and
unlocked electronically to prevent unauthorized usage. Laser's
default secure mode is locked mode.

4) Training Lens : A replaceable training lens will be installed on
each laser that reduces the power output by 80% to prevent
accidents for new users. Once training is completed, user may replace
the training lens with the included standard lens for maximum power.

Wow. I am surprised at myself. This is the first time that I've seen a gadget and thought it should not be legal to own for most people. I guess that is what having young kids does to you.

Blaaaaaah! I want this thing simply for the sake of having one. I'm another one of the believers that this sort of thing is going to see some serious legislation as soon as something goes wrong and I don't want the option of owning one lost to me forever just because I waited a little too long.

Then on the other hand.. what would I ever do with it? Does it have any sort of practical application as a self defense tool or even a utility tool? It isn't expensive for what it is but it is still 227 dollars and some change out of my pocket.

Help me deeeeecccccciiiiiiidddddeeeee!

I wouldn't want to use it for SD. Probably ineffective, and there's room for all sorts of legal trouble.

Practical applications include star pointing, driving the cat bat shit insane, and being generally awesome.

I saw this a few days ago. Have been thinking of putting it on my M4 (not joking). Would be great deterrent if someone was running the checkpoint, coming to close to the vehicle in traffic or otherwise about to be shot. Certainly daylight visible, green is good but on bright days can still be hard to see. Flares are best for ROE but they fun out fast and some companies don’t allow them. How scarry would that be to have a weapon pointed at you with a beam on your chest, and the dot is getting hot!?! That would scare the sh** out of me! A few small burns are better than being dead. :D

There's a good chance you would end up giving him skin cancer, as well as permanently blinding him.

Not my main concern, priority one is the safety of the client or compound. Burned or blind is better than dead. I think you would have to hold it on one spot for a while for it to do major burn damage, especially through clothes or a windshield. Just imagine the psychological effect if it caused a little smoke! Gave me chills just thinking about it! :D

So what if it reflects off something shiny on the car and binds you or the person standing next to you, or anyone else in the area?

Talk about mixed feelings! I would like to own one also, but one screw up and you or someone else is blind for life. Unlike pointing a firearm, this thing can refract off mirrors and stuff so pointing it in the right direction all the time may be hard. My main concern is young kids pulling one out and ripping your eyes with it. I am all about owning guns and knives, this worries me a little though. Some punk at the mall could hit you from a few hundred feet away, your permanetly blind, and no one ever even knew who did it, or where it came from.

This laser has no practical use and sales should be banned. In my area we've had idiots point their lasers at plane-cockpits when theyre preparing for landing. Its become a regular occurence and its a disaster waiting to happen.

i didn't see it noted on the site anywhere. hopefully they only sell conus. i would hate to have that get in the hands of the wrong people

Do you seriously think that all the '"wrong people" live outside the CONUS area?

I just bought one for the heck of It....

I recall reading that the ones Wicked is currently offering come with a trainer lens installed that knocks down the power considerably. Also, they now have multiple power levels, and as shipped, are set to a "dummy mode" whereby the laser starts at the lowest available power.

These features can be overridden by the end user, however. Still dangerous. . .

"You want my wallet?" "Yeah, I want your wallet!" Love that scene you got there in your sig line!

George Lucas is threatening legal action against them.

Looks too much like a lightsaber.

I think that unless LucasArts decides to strongarm WickedLasers and just keep them tied up in court, it's unlikely that LucasArts would actually win much of anything on legal grounds.

LucasArts is an entertainment company and WickedLasers is not. So far as I'm aware, you can't sue someone over something resembling an imaginary weapon from a "Long, long time ago..."
