Rather than scales, the handle might have to be thinned down for a hand to fit around :)
 
There was a maker at the last Knife Expo in Pasadena who had a monster Bowie/camp knife that was 5/8" thick. It didn't feel any heavier in the hand than a couple of my HI kuks. The scales were very thin!

I personally feel no need for a blade that size for any purpose I can think of... maybe a splitting axe, but even my tomahawk's blade doesn't get that thick before the eye.

Wow. Those should be issued instead of bayonets. You could dig trenches with that and process animals and cut steak and DELIVER ME UNTO EVIL FOR I AM THE KINGDOM THE POWER AND THE. Woops, not sure what came over me. Methinks the knife is possessed now. Still want it though :D
 
That is the perfect knife for a wide variety of senarios. Think hand to hand combat with any of the big 5 in Africa, clearcutting rainforests, zombie slaying, and ending any contest about whose is biggest. I like it!
