Hello to all of the CPK community

I had a (((slight))) accident last night and would like to share my story quickly. I was also curious if anyone else has a similar story. One where their beloved CPK drew their blood by accident.

Wednesday the 28th at 11 pm EST, I was checking out a few of my CPK choppers. I was scheduled to go to the mountains for New Years and was planning on bringing one.
I had out my recently purchased Behemoth Chopper and was inspecting the edge and blade overall. While checking out the blade, It slipped out of my hand. Before I could even think about it, my body's reflexes took over. The chopper was mid-fall from chest height. I grabbed the chopper in one motion. The kicker is I overshot the handle and grabbed two inches of the blade above the handle.

I was cut to the bone before I knew what had happened. I clenched my hand to close the wound and to slow down the blood loss. I remember testing to see if I could still curl my index finger. Thank god I could.

All of this happened in under three seconds.

I quickly wrapped my hand in a towel before running to the bathroom to check how bad it was. I took the towel off and unclenched my hand. I could see severed muscle and my bone underneath. It dawned on me how bad this could be. I quickly disinfected my hand with hydrogen peroxide to kill any and all bacteria. I wrapped it in gauss and got dressed with my other hand. Then rushed to my local ER. I ended up getting four sutures in my hand and an x-ray. According to the ER doctor, I am extremely lucky I didn't sever any of my tendons or ligaments. I did, however, sever a muscle group and several nerves.

This was a harsh reminder of how quickly something bad can happen from seemingly nothing.

Overall I am upset about my stupidity and involuntary reflexes. But extremely grateful this didn't end worse. Because it very easily could have.

As of my visit with an orthopedic specialist on the 29th, I should hopefully recover without much loss of function from my index finger.

Thanks for reading. I am curious whether anyone from this beloved community has had to be rushed to the ER due to an accident involving a CPK blade? Or am I just a special kind of idiot?

Wow. Could have been worse, I guess, all the best for your recovery !

PS: I did have a knife-caused ER accident some 30 years ago, not CPK though. 5 stitches and nerve micro-surgery, doing something stupid with a kitchen knife.

OUCH! Sorry this happened. I had a similar story but not with a CPK. I was using a balisong and practicing my skills (not very good skills LOL) and on a closing attempt grabbed sooner than should have and the blade pierced into finger. Yep. Off to the emergency room I went. I am still not sure what was worse. The stab or when I withdrew the knife and blood spurted out onto the white comforter on the bed. I had a not so happy wife in the house at that moment. The moral of any story like this = respect that blade (and even firearm). like you said. things can happen in a blink of an eye. Hope you heal up quickly.

My sympathies. I nailed myself in the same area about 20 years ago whittling in a very stupid direction. The scar doesn’t let me forget. I hope you heal up fast.

That's a bad one, glad you'll make a full recovery.

I stabbed my knuckle last year whittling some wood, the whole top of my index finger went numb, feeling started to come back about 8 months later, the scar cream stuff does actually seem to speed healing, use it once swelling has gone down and a hardish scab has started to formed.

I’m glad your reflexes kicked in and you were able to keep the BC from incurring any damage. A finger is really a small sacrifice in the scheme of things. I’m glad you’ll get to keep the finger and the BC is intact. It will help with physical therapy once that hand heals up some.

Or am I just a special kind of idiot?
Yes. I mean, accidents happen, but if you had been following strict orthodox knife worshipping/choosing protocol this wouldn’t have happened. You should have been squatting or on your knees in the doorway of your closet with the knives strewn about the closet floor in front of you. Instead you chose to “do it your way” and in doing so, angered the knife gods and paid the toll. Lesson learned and the blood drawn has balanced the scales.

10 sutures from a Zu Bladeworx Ronin melting through some pvc pipe I was leveraging into, striking the vice base and deflecting into my hand that was 2 feet away holding the bench edge. I thought that I had consciously planned to avoid *just that*, but that'd be a big negatory ghost rider. Didn't even feel it. Thankfully no surgery, and I still have use of those fingers. Very fortunate.

I had safety glasses on, though, so there's that. 🙄

That same one is on my EDC short list, the little rascal. And out of respect, I purchased two more. 👍 (<much irony in this emoji)

Glad that you're ok. Close calls have silver linings.

Hopefully you recover fully with little to no numbness. I have a half numb thumb from doing something stupid with a sawzall. I only notice it when my hands are really cold.

Edited to add - Yes, Marc, I was shaving.

I'll see you and raise you, DrBC DrBC

In July 2021 I was just finished doing some yard work with a golok, and after sharpening and preparing to put it away in a closet, my dog came to greet me. When I shifted to avoid her, the golok slipped the sheath and caught my right pinkie and right ring finger.

Like you, I wrapped my hand in a towel and drove to the E.R.

13 stitches total, 6 in the pinkie, 7 in the ring finger and permanent nerve damage to both. Motor function is fine, but the "feeling" is completely off and is more tingly than precise depending on what task I'm doing.

Mr. Murphy will always have his day.

(My most traumatic knife injury, and I've had a few, was getting slashed by some moron years ago and having a bit of my left index finger, which flew off, sewn back on. That was about a dozen stitches as well.)

Glad you are alright! While I was lining up my SDFKs against my monitors for Chad's GAW I bumped my desk and they all fell over like dominos, the two on the end falling to the floor, missing my feet and luckily also somehow not slicing through all of the computer cables on the floor. Mo CPKs mo problems.

Since we are sharing scars like that scene from Jaws .. Dec 2019, my brother in law stops by on his way to a camp and asks if he can borrow a .22 handgun, prefers a revolver. I present him with my 1960s Colt Single Action Army that has a cylinder full of CCI Stingers but is hammer down. Its in a leather holster with a hammer loop & as hes passing it back it slips out and lands hammer down on my tile patio. This era of revolvers was pre-transfer bar so by the grace of God, I was spared some potential real trouble.

What resulted was a clean through and through, in front side of shin, out backside of calf. No pain meds, no surgery, no bone or nerve damage. How I didnt catch it under the chin or right up main street Ill never know.

Also - glad your hand is OK and hope it doesnt interfere with your planned outing!

Man, that’s close. Could have been worse!

The biggest and most interesting scars I have are three lateral 4” scars in the middle of my back. My first fencing tournament when I was 14 was all ages and I was doing a 15 touch direct elimination bout against a much larger middle-aged guy. I kept trying to go under his guard and hit him in the belly and he kept parrying my blade up, windshield-washer style, and trying to flick touch to my back (think of casting a fishing line but you’re trying to land the point on someone’s back). But he was bad at it and kept landing flat. The lesson I took from it, eventually, was that I was a dumbass for trying the same move three times and thus earning three scars. Should be one or maybe two, tops. 🤷‍♂️
