Nutnfancy: love or not.

Back in 2008 I bought my first more expensive knife. A Cold Steel Medium Voyager. I did not know much about knifes back then. So I searched online and found the review by nutnfancy. This guy is a least partly guilty for my knife addiction.

Being new to collecting and much of what He (nutnfancy) reviews and and talk about (at great length) was a big help to me as a new comer but as you said..I find him amusing and knowledgeable. I find a good deal of his video's way to long and likes the sound of his voice. However he does offer good information on many items unknown to me (at the time) I got my start with him and for that I'm grateful. We do have freedom of speech and no one forces anyone to watch him. Though out opinions about him may vary he does have a large following and the balls to say what he feels and stands behind it..For this reason alone I have to give him credit..Concerning his viewpoints, well I couldn't give a shit and don't pay much attention as I have my own.
I joined this forum last year and have know idea how to use it..I came here today for 2 things..Info on Spyderco Positron and a BM 940-121 which I just got NIB and don't know what to resell it for. Please feel free to direct me or comment on my opinion. Thanks, Ed aka Jerseydevil1949 (same on IG)

I have to give him credit. He is passionate about knives and has put hundreds if not thousands of hours of videos so we can watch them if we chose to.

He goes far beyond knives... camping gear, guns etc. I don't know of a single individual who has more content or data points on gear than him... I have used many of his reviews when making buying decisions all of which I am happy with....

Surelyone, I've owned a few Sog products with mixed results. I don't depise Sog, I just feel there are better options in their price range. We often confuse (not saying you personally) price with value. I don't look down on a $60 knife but I do look down on poorly made $60 blades.

While I do find Nutn long winded, he does take the time to put out a video on a product he has usually extensively used. He probably does a better job that I could ever hope to do. If I'm interested in buying a product, I have no problem checking out his vids.

A- his review on the Sebenza was laughable.
B-he's allergic to anything over .0000001 ounces.
C-he thinks anything over $5 costs too much.
D-he yells JIMPAAANG which drives me nuts.
E-"dudes" "T.N.P.ers"
F-skateboard tape everywhere
G-everything he touches instantly becomes tactical.
H-he dresses like he's going to the front lines and carries a crap load of "tactical gear" everywhere he goes
I-the "knife-check" or "gear check" or whatever he does when he makes sure everyone he sees has a knife, multi tool, gun, toaster, and a fully stocked toolbox "on their person at all times"

He's a mall ninja.
One for those people who think the planet will explode while they're having a Big Mac or something and feels the need to be able to spend 5 years in the parking lot.

But hey, the dude is passionate and enjoys what he does, so who am I to say he's wrong. He's happy with it all so let him do it. I just don't like it.
Just my opinions, don't kill me if you disagree.

Ahahahahahah

The information in the reviews is there but you have to do a lot of sifting. The reviews have a radio talk show style format to them. But overall I think the reviews are informative and the format, though a bit long winded, is a lot different than most reviews. The typical knife video review just shows someone talking about the knife specs then proceeding to show us a demo that involves slicing a piece of paper or shaving some wood sticks.

I don't know why, but every time anybody uses the word 'dudes' in the plural it kinda hurts my ears.

Nuthing wrong with Nut but I have to join the long winded camp. "Dude" never use one word when a hundred - or a thousand - will do. Basically why I stopped watching - and listening. It's just too exhausting waiting for him to get to the point.

It was pointed out by another -far better- reviewer, one that unfortunately mostly reviews folders, that he never mentions edge bevel shoulder thickness, even on knives with V-edges. This means Nutnfancy really supplies very little hard information of real value... That being said, he does convey a passion for what he does, and I do fully agree with him on big blades, for which he provided some valid arguments.

He did do a few videos specifically on common, sometimes discontinued, factory daggers, which is very unusual, but for these he did not mention some of the more basic inherent advantages of daggers, even within the narrow context of self-defense, advantages that are very important for choosing that style of blade in the first place: The inherent advantages of low weight he did mention with regards to some models, but not as a general advantage of having a narrow blade ground on both sides... He failed to mention the advantage of having a near belly-less edge for instance, of course not confined to double edges, but still significant, and instead waxed positive on the Spyderco "Warrior" design, when that style is the opposite of what you want if you want your edge to have any "tip hooking" aggressivity for self-defense...

His lack of understanding of the significance of edge geometry is pretty obvious: He routinely uses as a stand-in for a Randall Model 1 the Blackjack "equivalent", saying absurd things like "you might as well be looking at a Randall" even though the geometries between the two knives are radically different... Like all convex edges, the Blackjack has no "reserve" of wear, and will change in geometry over decades of use, becoming duller and duller as the edge wears up, while the hollow grind of the Randall will keep the geometry exactly the same even after decades of use...

Infectious passion, but not a lot of unexpected insights, especially given the length of the videos...

(I'm trying this again in what is hopefully a more appropriate venue than W&C, tell me if it was dumb to post here)

OK, I've been on the forum for a couple years here, and to be honest, the guy who helped me get really well acquainted with knives, blade steel, manufacturers, and knife usage is Nutnfancy.

Now I understand he can be polarizing in his pol1t1ca1 views, his gear reviews, and just in general, the way he does things.
I think it is pertinent for me to say that I agree with 98% of his pol1t1ca1 views, and don't think he is a windbag or blowhard when it comes to knives, outdoorsy stuff, and the tactical shtick.

I also find some of his longer winded reviews to be entertaining as well as informational, though I don't watch everything he puts out.

I do get weary with silly unboxing and first impression videos done by the majority. They are a dime a dozen on YouTube and I don't really have the time to get what is essentially a non-review for an item I might be interested in buying.

But I'm wondering why it seems a huge majority of the forumites here (at least from what I've seen) think/feel that he isn't worth the oxygen he sucks.

Every once in a while he mentions why he doesn't frequent the knife forums as often as he used to a while ago due to people a. Thinking that he (Nutnfancy) doesn't know ANYTHING about what he's talking about and b. People putting crap on other people's ideas, opinions, and systems, while talking up their experience with little in the way of actual proof.

Y'all will probably think I am a dummy for even typing out this guys screen name, but I'm just curious why the bulging veins over this guy...
-JT 😀

I find many of his reviews done exactly as reviews shall be done,to the point, entertaining, often funny and always some plus addition on top.... extra blades for comparison, often also practical testing involved. I may say, overally I like him, however - I don't like about him is - he is praising nearly every knife he is reviewing....(no wonder,if he is possibly getting free knives + provision from companies)

I agree with you the fact is: most people doing reviews in Internet or unboxing videos just don't know anything or very little about the knife they are reviewing, their verbal expression skills are often horrible, bad video angle, bad lighting, talking a lot of crap out of context, simply loss of time..... Nutnfancy is non of it.
