Nutnfancy video worth watching

So far in this post, I've called the guy: Nerd, Douche, Tool, and Boner.
And still guys are like "Why you defending his honor??!"

So I give up.

Come on, man! It's all just a little good natured repartee between friends.

Enthusiasm is not a bad thing but he did talk waay too much on this video. He should have let the people he's interviewing continue uninterrupted. Hey, no one's perfect. It's good that people who dont make it to these Shows gets some insight.

I totally agree.
But if you ONLY focus on the negative, I don't think you're being honest with yourself about any of the good he's done for the knife world.

If I told you my opinion of him was 70% negative and 30% positive, would you agree that's pretty reasonable, or does it have to be 100% one thing or the other?

I am being honest about my opinion of him. What I posted is what I think of him, cross my heart...that is honestly what I think about NF.

...As we say in amateur radio, there's too much noise for communication...

As I mentioned in this previous post, the information content is drowned out by "noise". Signal to noise ratio, for me, is not optimum or even mangeable.

I just wanted to check out the Bradley Bowie.
Thanks to this video, and the jerkoff who created it, I was able to get a good (great?) look at the knife that I had previously only seen promotional / studio pics of.

That's all.

Wow! Lighten up dude. :D ;)

Haha. Nice.

A its all about your peronal style of douche or tool, if you like that douche than you use that douche. I still watch Skeltons videos because i like knife porn. Even though i know the extent of his use is probably cutting open a bag of chips or a box full of rubber dongs, i still watch.

About the same story here:

I wanted to get into knives without spending too much cash, getting too overwhelmed (like on a forum), or ending up with some crap product (because I place a high value on quality in everything in life). The result was my attraction to Cold Steel Knives (thanks to both NF and searching around/eliminating some companies). I am a tolerant kind of guy, so NF doesn't bother me and I like his enthusiasm. I'll have to watch that video when I have a spare hour, lol. I think it is cool that someone spends so much time trying to make a good presentation of his hobbies and how he likes them. Thanks for sharing the video link.

I think it's kind of funny that the people who use and respect knives and good knifemakers will tell you to quit worrying so much about heat treats and steels used and just buy a good knife from a solid maker that fits your needs and use it. Nutnfancy, for good or bad, finds knives that fits what he wants as far as designs and prices go and then uses them and tells people about it, which is exactly what is advocated by most people who've been around. And then he he steps above and doesn't just post pictures like what's so often requested, he posts actual videos of what he finds either good or bad, but he's blasted because some people think he talks too much or they don't like the way he talks or they disagree with him or they find him arrogant or they find him uninformed. Imagine how each of us would be received if we started making reviews that were as full if information as we could make them, be somewhat lively, and be worth watching to certain people.

Love or hate his personality, you have to admit that he buys and reviews knives just like what's recommended by pretty much everyone with any kind of real experience. If you don't like the fact that he doesn't review the steel types or that he doesn't even really feel the need to be knowledgeable about it, it's not a huge deal. He's actually pretty thorough. Having said that, I can't really gain a lot from his videos so I don't really watch them.

Brad Southard must at least marginally approve because it was his Facebook account where I originally saw this video posted. Spyderco must marginally approve because they allowed him 1 hour during one of the busiest shows of the year to take employees' and presenters' time for the interview, and the makers must marginally approve because they sat down for quite awhile for for this interview. If they all approve, who am I to do otherwise? I still found the video entertaining because it had insight from several people who are regarded as experts. I can easily look past the basically uninformed guy to hear the pros and I applaud Nutnfancy for putting himself out there. I'm sure most of us would look like dumbasses when put on the spot to interview experts in a field in which we're not, he's no different. I hope guys can see that and just appreciate this video even if they don't appreciate his others.

NF is a very polarizing figure in the knife world. Just as Jim Skelton (who has been mentioned a few times in this thread) is, but on the other end of the spectrum. So we tend to have problems with their attitudes and holier than thou approaches. Nutn will blather on about insignificant nuances in a $30 folder, and the more serious knife knut just rolls his eyes. While Jim will wax poetic about how unbelievably awesome HIS $2000 knife is, and even if you could get on this makers books he won't make you a knife greater than that one. This too can grate on the nerves.

Do I still watch Nutn's vids? Rarely, I've graduated from that level of collecting, but there are still more that he can sway over here. It honestly only takes reading a few threads to deprogram a TNPer and get them to understand what this hobby is really about.
Do I still watch Jim's vids? Absolutely, that (to an extent) is where I want to go collection-wise. So I will just clench my fist a few times and mute the volume for a bit when he goes into his Robin Leach, pompous ass mode.

What we need to do is understand that regardless of arrogance and holier than thou attitudes, both of these guys (along with quite a few others mentioned, and unmentioned) have had a lot of POSITIVE influence in our community, and for that deserve at least a bit of respect for it (and a touch of that vitriol which they have wrought upon themselves).

His review of the Kershaw Skyline is what got me started with all of this...

"Nerds" made your iPhone, your sneakers, your car, and your knife (and pretty much everything else you have that is cool) - deal with it, guys.

I believe that NF's detractors, including me accept that, what you guys(the lighten up and defending guys) need to understand is that we still don't like NF.

So there....:p

Time and time and post and post again we have indicated that our issue is only with his personality.

What you guys need to understand is that we're not idiots and our comprehension is fine. Is yours?

Point? The only thing NF makes are one man circle-jerk videos. Nerds are fine by me. Blowhards, not so much.

NF used to call himself a geek and a nerd but they both got cease and desist orders.

This. I took some shots at him earlier in the thread and I stand by them, the guy is irritating as hell. Despite that, I'll still check out his video in a heartbeat if it's something I'm interested in, because he often has some information/experience that I find useful. (I won't watch the whole thing, because I can only take being called bro and dude so many times.)

Essentially, my dislike for him doesn't mean I think he has no value or should stop doing what he does. And the same way, my appreciation for his contributions does nothing to obviate my dislike of the guy.

I think part of the reason the guy is so polarizing is simply his viewpoint. If you pay attention, you start to notice that he's not really an enthusiast the same way a lot of us are. I'm fascinated by the hows and whys of cutting performance, efficiency vs resilience and the behavior of different steels in different roles, at different edge angles, etc. Nutnfancy doesn't really give two hairs off a dead donkey's butt about that. He cares how the knife works for him. He's a total end-user, or at least that's what shows in his reviews. Nothing wrong with that, but it means he totally skips things, or comes off as painfully uninformed about things, that are fairly important to me.
