Nutnfancy video worth watching

Generally I like Nutnfancy, but don't like how he thinks he's the representative of legions of followers known as his "TNP Nation" and thereby should be respected as a top tier industry critic. Next he'll want to offer consulting services.

Interesting video though. Worth watching.

I find him incredibly and unbelievably obnoxious...there are so many better knife Youtubers out there. GideonsTactical, Late Boy Scout, WeAllJuggleKnives, Stefan Schmalhaus all come to mind

Edit: Oh, and Cutlerylover. Don't know how I forgot about him

I haven't had the opportunity to watch this video yet, but I love the idea of contrasting these makers with high technical knowledge of steels and knife makings with a reviewer who somehow has gotten by for years without really having any technical knowledge about metallurgy or knife manufacturing processes. I find it hard to take any knife reviewer seriously who isn't on the forums, because that is where the real learning occurs. It's why you see Nutnfancy or Jim Skelton videos where there are obvious technical inaccuracies.

I still get a moderate amount of enjoyment from his channel.

It's so easy to hate on him, it pretty much takes no intellectual effort to point out the ways in which he can be insufferable.
But consider what all he has done for the industry.

I'll tell you right now, his review of the Kershaw Skyline from 6 or 8 years ago was pretty instrumental in me purchasing one, and that purchase is what caused me to end up on these forums daily.

This is his hobby. I think it's pretty arrogant to tell someone they're "not doing their hobby right" in your view.
If the guy likes JIMPING BRO! so much that he's actually gonna criticize Phil Wilson to his face for not incorporating it into the design of the Southfork, so be it. That's just him. Roll your eyes and get over it.

At least he took the time out of his life to go to this show and spend an hour making a video I happened to enjoy.
Sure he's a total goofball and I doubt I could tolerate him in person for more than 15 mins, but so what?
I'm not sure if this is aimed towards my joke-post or not, but I'll reply anyways.
I don't hate him. I've seen a lot of his videos.
But the way he talks and acts is enough to make me want to swan-dive off the Golden Gate bride, when the river is frozen.
And especially hate that he said the Sebenza is a tactical fighting knife.

See below. This is exactly why he sucks. Well put J_Curd.

I guess I would answer that, with this:

When I was first getting into knives as a hobby, I found his videos helpful and informative.
Now that I've been into it for years and I have a better idea of what I like in a knife, his videos and opinions are less helpful to me.

:ambivalence:....

You may not want to admit it, but he has gotten a lotta guys into knives. Myself included. And that means more knife sales.
More knife sales means more profits, and hopefully better, more innovative designs using better quality materials.

Again, if you consider him / his channel like a "beginner's guide" and don't take him super seriously AND aren't too annoyed by his slang and personality, he's not so bad.

I agree with you. He's living in his own world for sure. But it doesn't really upset me like it seems to some people.
Think about all the people in your life you could apply the phrase "I don't like how he thinks _________" to.
I just chuckle and roll my eyes every time he says something like "Y'all TNPers out there, you all know what the OWL ON THE ROOF is all about..." Whatever dude. Just show me that new Spyderco there will ya?

The owl on the roof is plastic but it sure keeps the shit-birds away!

;)

Honestly? if he has that many fans who are devoted subscribers it might not be such a bad idea. From what i have seen the majority of the people who take up issue with him seem to do so based on his personality and his opinionated nature. Both of which i think are actually pretty essential for what he does. And i cant help but think he is popular for a reason. I for one never see him put his opinion out as fact and no one really complains about him giving false information. I cant help but feel deep down the guys who hate him so much because the idea of what he does is such a simple one that they are miffed they didnt think of it first. A narcissist hates nothing more than another narcissist. Especially one that seems to get a lot of attention.

A lot of folks seem to have a hard time wrapping their mind's around the idea that people can be more than one thing.

It's possible that he could be a total douche / full of himself / daily fanny-pack wearer / buyer of fake knives
AND
Have some positive impact on the knife world.

If you think he's a douche, you're correct!
If you think he's not a douche, you're correct!
It's all just like, your opinion man.

I don't like his ego, I don't like his politics and I don't like his thin-skinned reactions to even the mildest criticism. But I will watch parts of his videos because he tends to do a very good job of clearly showing me a knife from lots of different angles -- something even the collected images on a Google search won't do.

I tolerated his long winded tendencies, but that counterfeit Hinderer video was the last time I watched anything of his.

Yeah, I was disgusted by that, he managed to bash US knife companies and promote Chinese direct counterfeits in one fell swoop. He got slammed so hard that he pulled the video.

Aside from that, I don't watch him much but he's not as bad as people make him out to be. He does get a lot of facts wrong and I disagree with some of his opinions but they are just that: his opinions on his channel. That's for me personally because I know better... In the end, he doesn't claim to be an authority on knives, just someone who really likes them.

I recognize though that he does have influence on beginners to the hobby and they in turn parrot false information they learn from him. Again, he doesn't claim to be an authority on knives but surely novices may consider him as one. So aside from being thought of as "obnoxious", this is the reason why people here do not like him.

I do like his Spyderco booth interviews over the years though. Spyderco doesn't do much of them.

So why are you trying so hard?

This, exactly. A+. Same reason I am sorta drawn to CRK and Emerson enthusiasts, even though I'm not one of them. Its fun to hang with someone who is enthusiastic about his toys.

I like Nutnfancy's videos, and have probably watched most of them. But I have always been able to connect with outcasts, nerds, blowhards, losers and all the rest, because I know I'm no better than any of them, and in many respects a lot worse.

Nutnfancy often comes off as truly arrogant, but I'm okay with that, because he's not trying to date my sister. He's just some guy on Youtube who is real easy to ignore if I wanted to. Its easy not to watch his videos if you don't want to, and I'm not sure why people say bad things about Youtube reviewers they don't like instead of just ignoring them. Just don't click on his videos. You don't have to tell me about it.

I just wish everyone had a sweet spirit like I do. ;)

Dude!

Well said, sir!

I Find his vids. both interesting and entertaining. 'If it's Nutnfancy, it's probably gonna take a while' you know that going in. But let's take the other end of the spectrum, you know, those 2-3 min videos going something like.."Hey, this my new knife hmm, just got it hmm, (noise in background) that's my cat, hey get outta here"..and so on..lol

So at least we have choices people.:)
Cheers

Big Kitty and Dr. Bob are gonna be in every video.

I don't know. To me it's the bear grylls effect. I hate it when someone has the attention, and dare I say influence, over a large population and they proceed to give out bad advice.

I went on a hike with my wife's friend and husband once. It was a nice hike and we had a good time. I did notice he was decked out in grylls gear. At the end of the hike there were switchbacks and my wife and I were taking our time and going slow. He decided to run down the switchbacks grylls style. The minute he started down I flashed back to the time when I had to carry a guy 100 yards up a steep incline because he tripped and tumbled half of the way down it and couldn't walk. Grylls guy made it down okay and this guy we're talking about isn't grylls but bad advice is bad advice. I don't really care about the guys personality, he's just not very knowledgeable. He has the tendency a lot of reviewers have. They make up their mind about something and then go out to prove themselves right.

If you like him, that's cool. I don't. :D

Anyone remember his review of the Spyderco Southard? Ugh...all he talked about was the price. He insisted that it shouldn't be so high because it's made in Taiwan and Taiwan is China right????

Ugh that review pissed me off. Completely ignoring the quality of the piece as well as the fact that Spyderco's Taiwanese quality is on par with or, in my opinion, exceeding that of their US productions.

That's about when I just stopped paying attention to his videos
