Nyala Has Landed ............

J,

Any chance of a comparison photo?

Thanks!

Yes, give me a day or so. I think I'm going to toss a quick video comparison onto YouTube as well. The funny thing is, on paper, they should be very similar. In real life, both are great, but they are very different. Personally, other than the fact that the one piece fixed blades are classics and are discontinued, in my opinion/for my needs, the Nyala simply blows away the 4" Mountaineer and Shadow versions. And I'd say that even if the Nyala was butt-ugly, which it most definitely is not.

Yea, but the Nyala can't store matches and a compass. :p :D

Looking forward to the pics!

Now we know another reason why the "Scout" was never made. OBE (overtaken by events - end of OPR and newer design in the works)

I got to handle one at the mothership, and the angle at the top back of the handle bugged me a little. That's the only nit I have to pick with it. But Chris explained to me that he expected it to be held choked up more often than not. It's great to get design philosophy and intent straight from the designer.

Here's a quick one with a Mountaineer I and an S35VN MT-06 in the background. The angle of the light makes the Mule look like it's got a coated blade - it's stonewashed and looks more or less the same as the Nyala if the light is at the same angle.

J,

Thanks for the comparison shot. That was very, very helpful since I own a Mtn. 1. The Nyala handle looks like it would be very comfortable in the hand.

Enjoy your new knife!

Nice comparison shot John

Great picture

I think the Mountaineer got bumped to the rear :D:D:D Rick :D:D:D

Yeah, Rick put his finger on it. Actually, I guess Rick's got all five fingers on it, and that's the comment I was going to make. :D While the Nyala is a real knockout as far as looks go (my opinion), it isn't until you get the Nyala in hand that you appreciate the little touches. I'm going to follow up in greater detail this weekend, but there are a lot of things working together to make this a genuinely great knife.

The only area where I think the Mountaineer clearly has (pardon the pun) the edge on the Nyala is the sheath. I really like the snap loop on the Mountaineer sheath, compared to the belt loop(s) on the Nyala and Shadow sheaths.

There may be some cutting tasks where the narrower blade (spine to edge) of the Mountaineer (or Shadow) are an advantage, but that just depends on specific use and needs.

The one-piece knives are time-tested classics, for sure. I predict the Nyala will become an instant classic.

I agree and it is close to what some people have asked for: a fixed blade Sebenza. I love the swedge on the blade, reminds me of the LDC Sebenza or a Regular profile with the swedge option.

Oh man. How I wish I could EDC a Nyala. :(

UPS brought mine yesterday and that is exactly what I plan on doing with mine for awhile. I guess I should find out if it is legal here but I can't see having any problems.

Where do you live?

I could EDC the Nyala if I had it exposed and on my belt. But, considering my job, that might not be such a good idea. :D

My first CRK is going to have to be a small Sebenza.

I live in rural Oklahoma. The leather sheath is not threatening looking at all. It looks a little like the plier sheaths a lot of farmers wear. Very little of the handle is visible.

I carry a Large Sebenza every day and frequently carry a fixed blade knife as well. Most of the Kydex sheaths I have are nice but the really do stand out and look aggressive to me.

The Nyala feels just like a Sebenza with more belly in your hand. I like it a great deal.

Looks like KnifeWorks has some more in stock. NGK has mentioned expecting some more in soon (six).

For those looking for one, Howard just posted in the dealer forum that KCI has got a few more in stock. I am guessing he got the six that were discussed earlier...
