Sorry Eric Normark

If you use a thumb hole, you'll have to pay Mike Turber royalties for using his design...

A hole by its nature is weak. I have never bought a Spyderco because the hole weakens the blade.

I want to be confident that my knife can stand lateral forces to pry doors open and handle whatever emergency situation I find myself in.

I want my knife stronger than me.

Don't blades usually break near the tip? And don't you need to drill a hole in the blade for a thumbstud, anyway?

How many Spydercos break at the hole? If you want your knife to be stronger than you, are you really in the market for a folder?

Thumbstud all the way ,maybe even a 1/2inch bolt for a stud .
Holes :barf: might work well on smaller and thinner blades, and men with lady fingers...... but not on a busse blade .
I also keep hearing that it will cost less with a hole design ,but if the knife has a well designed thumbstud I wouldnt care about the cost !

Not a flame, but how many knives have you broken during use? If this is a genuine concern, a thumb-stud or opening hole isn't going to "make or break the deal" for a user like you....especially for a folder.

My suggestion would be to get the best folder you can for typical use, but have a Steel Heart or Battle Mistress in the trunk for that "1%-level" of need when you truly need a stout fixed blade.

BTW, Jerry, how are things coming along for this project?

A drilled out thumbstud ,is alot smaller then an open thumb hole ! :footinmou
When im buying a folder ,the whole point is trying to find one as strong as it can be .

The actual physical date of the move will be from Apr 11 until Apri 14, so hopefully we'll just be down for a *long* weekend.

It's gonna get interesting now ain't it...:p

Oh, and put me down for a hole, but not some freakish overgrown eyesocket like those @#%$# spydies....NO, make it rectangular - or even better, use the outline of a combat blade as the shape - that would be neat.

But it's still a hole.

Again, don't blades typically break/fail at the tip, along the cutting edge, or at the pivot or lock of a folder?

Are Spyderco or Strider folders known for breaking at the hole?

I'm really asking this question (again), I'm not claiming to be a knife guru.

Edit: Here's a series of good posts on this topic (especially the thread linked at the end):
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=250831

It would appear that a small drilled hole has at least the potential to be a bigger stress riser, due to its sharper transition, than a large radiused thumbhole.

It would also appear that proper design & execution will probably trump any concerns about either choice. So perhaps the choice ought to be made on functionality rather than blade strength.

I don't think Jerry would have offered the choice if he thought one was inherently weak.

Seeing the recent banter about holes and blade strength, I gotta speak up again - - why not use a toggle style thumb-stud (below)? This puts the stud behind the stress line between pivot bolt and working part of the blade. Effectively, this removes the hole-issue. (Ha!)
