October 98 registered members! Please stand up!

Hi,
In ten years some "Oct98" were sadly gone, some came back some were banned... Other even turned into wise moderators. ;)

What did happen to us eventually?

We were some kind of "foundation fathers". Idealists and very happy to be there in this new cyberspace "built" for our passion.
Most of us were exiled from a Mad Dog religious ego trip on the KF back in those days...
The BF was some kind of promised land. Freedom of speech. Respect to other points of view.
But eventually it seems like new "knives cults" and followers has been built.
Some moderate. Some radical. Some crazy. But cults are often narrowing the mind. To ask some "wrong" question on the "wrong" forum turn often to flame.

Ten years ago it was the start of the Tactical Folder crase initiate by the boom of the AFCK, Millie and CQC7. The Sebbie will soon follow.

The Thread which was coming back on the Benchmade forum was:
"AFCK or CQC7 what is the most tactical"...

(In 1998 it was th same about the Starmate and the Military...)

Then it was the fashion of Neck Knives. Kerambit. Hunted. Bushcraft...
Ten years ago we were also chatting about blades without the spectre of terrorism on our back...
Perhaps we were more innocent ?

Now there is a new generation of forumites. Seems also that the 1st access to the internet is made by younger people nowadays.

Do you feel the general tone in the exchange of knowledge has changed in a good way in ten years ?

Cheers
JM

Hello folks! Hey Bob! I never heard about your heart attack! How you doing?

P.S. Hey Baldy, what's that orange scaled Wharncliffe in you picture? I like that.

Gene,

Great to see you here too! That attack was on Easter Sunday 2006. I'm doing pretty good now actually although I had to stop a number of exercise routines because of severe stenosis that developed in my neck. I kid that I no longer can skydive or get on a trampoline..... but it is more serious than that. Still, I'm enjoying things.

That Warnie is a great little number and a bargain to boot (the cheapest piece in that picture). Made by Jim Wharton who goes with a "Stag & Steel" logo, it reflects the design features I think important. I absolutely hate Warnies whose cutting edge parallels the handle. As you can see from the picture, this one has its edge well below that line. Came fitted with a multi-position kydex sheath. Wharton sells here in the Maker's Fixed Blade For Sale Forum.

So you sold off your blades. What about your torches? LOL

JM,

I probably could write a mini-novel in response to those two queries. Instead, I'll bite my tongue and crawl back into my corner :)

JM,

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Our own personal tastes may have evolved (or regressed) but there's always a new crop of members coming up behind us that have the same questions, fantasies, beliefs, and/or prejudices that we all exhibited ten years ago.

And a new crop of experts to help them along the way (or not). ;)

It's been an interesting ride to say the least and one I'd not have missed.

I didn't make it until December.

My favorite was the Spyderco Wegner and now its the Wegner Pro Hunter. Things only get better over time.

I used to hate being thought of as an "Old Guy." Now I'm just happy to be around! The last ten years have been some ride!

Dan

Is this all that's left of us? Anyone ask Sparky if he can pull up active users with Oct '98 registrations?

I am still posting and checking in a few times a week, still collecting. Ten years goes by a lot quicker than you would think.

'98 seems like ages ago, even if I registered in February of '99! I'm still around, haven't posted much in the last few years but still collect customs. Fikes, Fogg and Hartsfield are still at the tops of my list.;) I guess I found alot of my Holy Grails, so it's a rare, rare thing to add a knife to the collection now.

Oh yeah, Paramedic school hasn't left alot of time (or money & sleep) lately either, and heck, I even just graduamated!

Funny though, I was just thinking about the early days of the forums last week, back to the rec.knives newsgroup days. Lotsa' fond memories, lotsa money spent and a few knives still in the collection from then.

Edited to add: Almost ten years and 115 posts. Maybe in ten years I can make it up to 200 posts!:D

Take care,
John

I guess I'm almost in the "Old Crowd" I lurked for months as the computer thing was fairly new to a Leatherneck like me then - can't believe it's been that long. Thanks for starting this thread Nemo.

I still enjoy learning about all things sharp and I think that is what continues to draw us old Timers back year after year.

All of us that have survived this long share other good traits I'm sure. I have alot of admiration for several of the Founding Members - like Gus / Bastid, Blues, Coug, etc There sure are alot that have come and gone, several I really miss their knowledge and perspective and some still here I wish would hurry up and leave.... :D but like the other Old Guys I will endure.

Bob,
Sorry for the late reply but I'm always late! :) Very glad you're doing okay. I stopped most of my exercise years ago! :) Yeah, let go of just about everything about 3-4 years ago as I had some serious expenses come my way and just got bored with the whole knife thing and especially the forums.

I still have some odds and ends and kept some favorites. I had quite an extensive collection of old Spydercos and they're gone too.

Yeah, still have quite a few "torches"! I even got into building some for awhile but my "mentor" ran off with a bunch of folk's lights and money. The LED technology is advancing so fast that if you miss a few days on the light forums, you're way behind.

Some of the things I'm seeing nowadays are the older stainless steels like ATS-34, (154CM), 440C, 8A and others still hanging in there. The "wonder steels" craze has waned some. Not disappeared by any means, they just don't seem as important now as they once were. I guess a lot of folks found out they weren't as "wonderful" as promised. The old standby non-stainless steels are also more popular now.

Slip joints have made a remarkable recovery. When I was screaming for manufacturers and makers to provide orange, yellow and brightly colored scales years ago, it fell on deaf ears. Now they're everywhere which is great!

Funny how the old saying that the more things change, the more they stay the same seems to ring true here. I like that the young guys are getting more and more into the "retro" stuff.

Yeah, I've always been a big fan of Wharnies. I like ALL Wharncliffes and Sheepfoots. Thanks for the info on your orange Wharnie. It's a winner!

I didn't even know forums existed until 2004. I read an article in a magazine about gun forums. I didn't own a computer before 1990 and I didn't get online until around 1998.

A quick search shows that of the people who registered in October of 1998, there's only 96 who are still "active" (have been online in the last 30 days):

Of course, there were only 248 people who registered that first month, so I guess that's not too bad for odds after 10 years.

96 of us left who still post or check in? Wow.
Nice to be included in that number. Even though it makes me old. :)

October 98 alumni checking in.

I also came here to get away from the old Knifeforums controversies even though I have remained a member there also all of these years. I too started on rec.knives before any of the forums existed.

Even though I don't post much I check in to read often and enjoy it just as much as I did 10 years ago.

Just found the thread by mistake on a google search after starting a new thread. Can't believe there are still that many active users from Oct. 98!!!

After nearly loosing a finger to a Gerber and a Buck, my first "real" knife was a Spyderco "Q", then an Endura, followed by a BM 910 Stryker, then a BM 9100 Auto-Stryker. Elishewiz was my fav. maker so my first custom was a real Striker.

Bought / sold / traded (mostly) over 100 folders on this forum in the first few years. The one I regret let getting away most is probably my DC Munroe Chimera, followed by my Ralph / Simonich Talonite EDC, (2) one of a kind Apogees, then my Drew aka Corduroy modded BM 850. Oh yeah, and my SpeedTech Elishewitz IPO / pewter SpeedTech.

These days I only have an Ontario RAT-5 with custom kydex sheath, a BM 635 I've had forever and of course a large, plain regular Sebenza. I swear I've had 6-7 of these, (as stjames can confirm) but this is my first dual thumb-lug. The ONLY way it's getting away this time is for an XM-18. I'm considering getting a CF handle scale for it and a flame job on the Ti. scales.

I may be one of the "old timers" here, but luckily I started at 18. ;) I've also grown to appreciate older folks over the years...my 78 y/o G-PA is my best friend. I'm still with the woman I was with 3 years before I joined here and our first child is due in Feb. Luckily I don't trade my women like I did my knives. ;)

Here's to another 10 years on BFC!!!

Looks like us 10/2/98 members are the real old timers here on the site. ;)

Seriously though, it's great to see that there are still a good number of us around and continuing to participate here on the forums.

Here's to you all!
