off the busse subject

I have carried and used both a hinderer and CR sebenza in pass arounds here. I really liked the Sebenza a lot. Smooth folder and well built. It was a cutter, much more than the Hinderer. I would not feel under knifed with one.

Are they worth it? Sure. If you don't like it, you can get your money back out of it relatively speaking. Just depends on whether you like the feel in your hand or not.

The fixed blades? I would not buy one. For the money there are brand I like better, with more durability. The hollow handle ones always appealed to me, but the handles are just not comfortable enough for me.

I don’t see a need to be a guardian of the “purity of the forum”. If this is so inappropriate, I’m sure the happy fella with the Busse folder will let us know (if he ever puts that folder down). Isn't it why he gets paid the big bucks?
The way I read OP’s question seems to be very complimentary to the people that frequent this sub forum; he wants their opinion, not the opinion from the main board or CR boys, but the HOGs of Busse, and the people generally admiring Busse products. So why not? At the end there is always this “don’t like, don’t click on the thread” thing as well.
But then again, you see it one way I see it the other, that’s why we post in here, isn’t it?

You are 100% correct, so I'm done!!!

Here's to pipe dreams worth waiting for...!

Based on this picture, I'll pass on waiting.............

I find it hard to address the "value for money" aspect of the OP's question ... if knives are a passion then you can willingly pay more for what amounts to "a little bit extra" ... I don't say a "little bit" out of hand ... because after years of testing and comparing "high end" knives with "value for money" knives the "difference" is usually "small" compared to the difference in price ... and this holds true for me with the Chris Reeve folders ... they have a better fit and finish ... similar to hand made custom knives and considering they are mass produced this is very impressive ... but this is probably their best point ...

For me the different steels available from Spyderco would interest me more and they are cheaper and the heat treatment is tailored for each steel and it is an excellent heat treatment ... something which CRK have had problems with from their response to the Noss tests on their fixed blades ...

The CRK folders though have not been shown to have these issues ... but I have heard they are a little "soft" on edge retention ... however they are known to sharpen easily ... although for me the type of steel they are using ought to have very good edge retention ... if the HT was done properly ...

So I have had some concerns over the HT on the CRK knives and given the high cost of their folders I decided when I wanted a high end folder to go for a "custom" where the extra money went into the blade being individually heat treated and then Rc tested and the maker providing a certificated Rc hardness ... plus the steel was a careful blend of stainless damascus to give the best properties of edge retention and lamination for toughness ... the cost was only slightly more than a Sebenza at the time ... but worth it to me ...

I guess what I mean is I would rather go higher "cost wise" and have just what I wanted if considering a CRK folder ... this folder was done for me by Mike Lampery a UK maker as a folding utility fighter and is now the only high end folder I own ...

Design wise though the one piece range was very interesting ... a great idea for a hollow handle blade ... very "original" and well thought through ... but they suffered from chequering which was far too aggressive ... this ruined the "hard use" working ability of these knives ... especially in their designated "survival" role where bare hand use must be comfortable ...

I tried to get away with using one of these for a while but gave up on it due to the uncomfortable grip ...

The other fixed blades don't interest me ... you can get better for less ... especially from Busse and Bussekin ... a Busse Basic is going to be cheaper or in the same price range and is a much better combat/survival knife ...

I believe The Large Sebenzas, Regular or 21, are worth more then they charge. I also believe that the claims of soft edge retention actually comes from people that are forming a burr and not removing it. So it feels razor sharp but then they cut anything harder then hair and it bends the burr over. That is my observation after doing it myself and not realizing it takes a little more to get the burr off then say INFI. Once I was able to properly sharpen my Sebenzas, I would not call them soft and they hold an edge very well. To me the Sebenza is the perfect folder and CRK is the most reliable company. They are no nonsense knives that actually take zero maintenance aside from sharpening to properly function and hold up well in just about any environment. They are hollow ground aside from the older ones and they are very good cutters unless you can't sharpen them.

They are very smooth and to me very comfortable. To me they put an end to the search for the perfect folder. I have been around the block just like most of the people in this forum. I found what I think is the best and I don't argue with what others find to be the best for them. I just sit back and enjoy my knives. I had to fall back to traditionals because they are such a different style knife from the sebenzas. I couldn't take not shopping for folders anymore :)

Just IMHO,

Kevin

worth noting that when i said that bringing s30v down to 55-57rc removes everything that makes the steel good, I was speaking solely of his use of s30v in his fixed blades. He puts his sebenza's at 58-59. I'm not familar with S35VN steel, so I can't claim to know exactly what it's best hardness for a fexed blade thats expected to see hard and heavy combat feild use, but I'm asuming it's similar to s30v, which isn't something I'd choose in anything but a slicer to begin with. As a folder though, it's an excellent choice at 58rc.

LVC, I have one CRK FB. The Pacific, never used, carried or sharpened so I have zero experience. Busse for FB's all the way in my house :)

Definitely Iconic, but I had to let mine go. I had the Tanto 9 inch one piece. I think it would have been quite uncomfortable to use, and I wanted to put the cash into the Busse pool, so I let her go.

This will draw some hoots from the peanut gallery, but I once traded an HOFSHLE for a CRK Shadow I and Strider MT-L.

I still have them both as my single exemplar of their respective makers' skills.

A HOFSHLE !!!!!!!!!!!!!! :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

I like my CRK's and Striders, but personally I would not trade my HOFSHLE #23 for anything.

IMO CRK makes the best factory folder hands down. I've had some custom locking folders, but didn't like any as much as my sebenza's.

It has the best straight handle of any folder I've held. And as far as the quality...I'm not sure if anyone other than CRK will ever win the Manufactured Quality award at the Bladeshow. They deserve it.

(After reading the first couple pages) OMG! Does every other thread have to turn into a pissing match over right and wrong? For God's sake! We talk about aftermarket mods by other than Busse employees, we talk about cars, women, men, children, watches, wallets, hikes and so many other things that are so far over and not even on the fringe of INFI talk. Busse brought us here, now let's get along. I feel like we need a "Does not play well with others" sign on the door sometimes.

As for CR knives, I have no experience. If I had the fundage I would love to try a large, plain Seb. People I respect like them, so I bet they are great.

I agree with this. Lately things just haven't been the same in the busse forum, as a result, it seems to me that participation is down. Can't we all just get along?

As far as the CR knives, I've handled one and was not impressed by the price for the materials used.

Joshuabl - I know what u mean lmao. Titanium slabs...junk...S30V? What were they thinking? Phosphor bronze washers now perforated...sheesh.303 Stainless screws and bushings that automatically lock due to the steel choice. I respect ur opinion but my opinion is that they made some very smart material choices.

He didn't say the materials were poorly chosen, just that the price/value ratio was out of line based on those materials. I don't think he was that far off. As an example, consider this selection of Kershaw knives:

supersteelmodels.jpg

The bottom five knives in this photo all have titanium slabs and premium steel blades, including (from top to bottom) CPM D2, SG2, S30V, ZDP-189, and 440V. Four of the five are assisted openers while the other is a flipper. And I didn't pay more than $200 for a single one of them, brand new.

I think they are worth it; my EDC folder is a sebenza 21 and love it. Definetly there are other excellent brands (Hinderer, Lion steel etc) but some of those are really really hard to get or the price in the secondary market is too high. Personally I'd rather to invest that money in a Busse fixed blade. I also have a Nyala and the knife does an excellent job; I wouldn't compare this knife with a CABS, SAR 3 or SAR 4, it is like you are comparing a BMW sedan and a Hummer (H3). But this is just my opinion.

I think we should try to get our names on this list, so they could be preserved for all eternity :D

I'll agree

I think the list order being the 11 year old list should be how many posts you have in the old and new FOLDER death chant threads.

By my calculations, bananaclip is first and I'm second on the new list :D ;)
