I was thinking of going the 22 route. but most likely the pistol i get will be the nightstand gun and an edc for some time. So, even though where i live i dont expect a break in, i still need something with enough first round stopping power for if the wife (heaven forbid) needs to drop somebody. Me im grabbing the pistol grip mossberg 500 if someone EVER breaks the threshold but she has no interest in getting knocked on her ass lol

I should have started out by asking for the intended use of this firearm you want to get. I'd give different recommendations depending on what the use was gonna be. Guns are like women's shoes in that way, yer gonna need a bunch of them but the first 2 or 3 need to be carefully picked. Don't sweat it man, in ten years you'll have 10 of them.

If you're ever expecting a break in, somethings really wrong. Or you live in Detroit. Seriously, a .22 is a good multi-purpose piece. Good for small game, target practice, learning/fundamentals and just plain fun. If someone ever breaks in and its all you have on hand then somebody would really hafta be committed to take three. 22 rounds to the grape and keep pushing on for your valuables. At close range(room to room) the.22 would be ample deterrent. I'm not saying it's ideal, but it's better than a stick.

This is a smoking deal, That's dealer price though right? You'll usually get some night sights on these and they've been factory reconditioned. I've had several.

Nope. Right now that's anyone's price. You can order it online from a place that deals with tons of reconditioned agency trade ins. If you want the site, let me know. I didn't want to deal spot.

I think Murph nailed it. Get a .22 and shoot the hell out of it for not a lot of money.

Yeah, go with Murph's idea. Ruger makes a 22/45 that has the same grip angle as the .45 you want. You can shoot it all day, or until your loading thumbs give out . Plus, you'll save money and the skills you aquire with the .22 will transfer directly to the .45. It's a win/win.

The Browning Buckmark even has the same controls along with the grip angle, unlike the Ruger.
Or get a used High Standard.... mmmmmmm donut. (slide release is opposite side)

BCR, I'm not a fan of plastic pistols. They lack heft, rigidity, and don't carry the gravitas of a fine machine.
They're light, durable, and reliable - good attributes in a portable weapon. Lighter guns also recoil at a higher velocity. Unless you're carrying it day in and out, smaller and lighter convey only disadvantages: more transmitted recoil, lower velocity with shorter barrels, more blast, shorter sight radius, slower to get back on target. Range guns, house guns, target guns - gimme weight, stability, and a fine sight picture.

Agreed, they also don't have any soul to them either. On the other hand once you have put 2,000 to 5,000 rounds through them you don't notice the recoil any more, they just become a natural extension of your body and I've taken my muddy ass glock in the shower before to hose it out. I never would've done that with my Hi power.

Whatever you get, get quality and much ammo.

Dude, I'd be jumping for joy if you're talking about public land. That means the woods won't be full of yahoos.

Good rain gear and one of these have put me on stand in plenty of rainy weather.

I don't hunt in a tree stand where I go. The trees aren't wide enough up the mountain. I wish I could since I battle high thorn bushes and higher ground would be a benefit. I usually only sit till about 9 hoping to catch a late traveler from the lower fields, then I stalk the rest of the day

I've been skunked all week.
Not even bothering today (see time).

Ruger 22/45 is a good pistol, but I prefer the Buckmark -- it just feels better in hand to me. - both can be found new or used under $300.
either one can be a tack driver with a little practice.
and a .22 that you've practiced a ton with will be a better SD pistol than the uber-tactical job that your lady doesn't practice with because of the sharp report and recoil and you can't afford to buy enough ammo to put 50 rounds downrange 3 mights a week to get proficient with it.

Stock up on mags! :D

With this gizmo, I can load 10 mags in a couple of minutes or less. Then, I have 100 rounds to zing downrange without any stopping to reload.
