Y'all make me want to get a firearm...

Too bad unexpected expenses nixed that idea for the foreseeable future :( I had to shell out $3463 this month that I wasn't expecting to have to spend. Was going to get an XDM40 too. Seems like a neat pistol to me. Any of you have experience with it and can give me a yea or nay on whether it's worth buying as a first handgun?

Crimson, I don't know if I would go with a 40 for a first handgun. They have pretty snappy recoil for a beginner that could lead to a bad flinch. I would go for a 22 for a first handgun. You can shoot a buttload of ammo for cheap and get the fundamentals down before you have to deal with a bunch of recoil.

As far as the xdm goes I haven't shot one so no comments there other than everything i've read about them is that they are great guns

I suppose I should clarify that I've shot handguns before plenty of times, and I prefer the .40 and .45. I just haven't OWNED my own handgun yet. Plenty of range time though, just with the rental guns at the range. Favorite gun is the 1911, and not a huge fan of the Glock design, but everyone says Glocks are so reliable, and the XDM seems like a good compromise. Not locked into it, just wanted some feedback from any owners, if there are any out there.

I agree, and Springfield is top of the line so I'd have no worries, although I've only held them never shot 'em.. I'd suggest call around your local shooting range and find one that rents that particular gun and go spend an hour with it.. A decent indoor range will have some of the more popular guns you can rent and probably could point you in the right direction with a couple choices...

ETA: ooops.. okay you've been to a range so you know whats up, myself I love glocks, but that's just me... :)

Ahhh, that woulda changed my reply then. I have a S&W M&P 40 that I really like. It has been a great gun and runs smooth without any hiccups. It has eaten every type of ammo that I've fed it.

I have both a 1911A1 and a XD9. They are both great guns. I have had no problems with either. Do you want one to carry or just to have around the house?

I might carry it some, but most of the time probably will be locked up at home. I'm less inclined to want to carry it because the sheriff here puts you into the state database of ex-cons if you apply for a CCW. Guy's a real piece of work, IMO.

That's why I love where I live. If you have your permit and show it to the cops when u get pulled over they usually let u go with a warning. I have a small body and I carry a full size 1911 or a full size XD. They are great guns

I think its time to get off before I go on how our governor is a dumbass or how living in illinois sucks...aww crap im leaving.

I went with the Springfield XD 40 for my first handgun.
I absolutely love it.
The round has some decent pop, but it seems like the barrel returns to target quickly and easily.
Plus it shoots dead nuts on target out of the box.

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like it's a reasonably good choice then, for someone who likes a .40. I'd go .45, but the ammo is just so much more expensive.

I talk too much it seems. I'm nearly to 3K posts already, and still haven't finished the blades I'm making for my last GAW. Sheesh :P

Finally sat down to watch "Machinegun Preacher". My God, that will make you wonder what In the hell you're doing with your life.

You could get into reloading.......:D Then you can have a whole other obsession. It starts out innocent enough, then you need an electronic scale, then an auto dispensing scale, then a better case trimmer, a different press, and then....well you get the point.

That was definitely one of the determining factors in my choice of calibars.
I had shot a S & W 40. And the round felt great to shoot.
I actually had my heart set on getting a Glock 40 cal., but after handling the Springfield, the choice was easy.
The Springfield molds to my hand. And the action is smoother and just feels like it's made better.
I still like Glocks and will probably own a 9mm in the future. However, I've never second guessed my purchase of the Springfield.
Plus it came with holster, mag holder, and speed loader!

I have enough problems of that sort with knifemaking.

I shudder to think about how much money I have invested in new equipment for this hobby.
