I have been contacted by a member of our great community and this party has donated a prize for this contest. I'm not going to say what it is because I don't want to compromise the idea of this contest/practice. I will say this though - it will be worth your time!!

Contest:

This whole idea revolved around actually USING a Personal Survival Kit. Too many times we spend money and effort building these things to just post pictures of them online to look cool. I want to see the guys out there who are DOERS, not TALKERS.

Outline:

You are to set out into the woods using only the items you would normally have on your person, and your PSK. You are to use this kit to its fullest ability to sustain yourself out in the wild the way a PSK is intended to work.

Rules:

My other thread said "no rules" but since we are giving items away, I need to make a few basic parameters:

- There will be no limit to the size of your kit or its contents. That said, this should fall within "PSK" ideals and not be a loaded up gear bag. Feel free to use whatever you want, but practicality will earn you more points than just simply having the most stuff.

- You are to spend at least 24 hours in the wilderness with the items in your kit. You choose what to use and how to use it.

- You will be judged on taking care of your basic needs. Shelter, fire, food, water, signaling, whatever else you think is important. Obtaining food while out there will certainly earn you more points, but it is not necessary. Please abide by local laws while taking on this challenge.

- Please do not cheat yourself. This is practice for you as much as it will create a great thread on here. Dress appropriately for the weather, but do not 'gear up' for this trip. I think we can all handle an uncomfortable night in the woods to see where our skills really line up. If you wouldn't carry it in your normal day to day activities or in your PSK, please do not bring it. (Other than a camera).

- You must take pics of the kit and you using it. The better documented your journey is the better off you are at winning this contest.

- I am a firm believer in mindset and skills before gear. If you carry a basic kit because your skills and knowledge are excellent, don't fret. As long as you can 'get it done' with what you have you will be well on your way to a great prize. I will not be judging based on who has the 'coolest' kit.

Judges:

Me. Our donor liked the original thread and gave me the honors of being able to decide who this great gift will go to. I want to keep this fun and upbeat and not solely about the prize, so please keep that in mind.

Timeframe:

I know we're busy and weather is getting colder, so I will be putting a 1 month time frame on this contest. Entries will not be accepted past Dec 11th, 2008.

Cliffnotes:

Grab your PSK, spend a day in the woods with it. Take pictures of your experience and write an after action report with how it went, what you learned, what worked well and what didn't work at all. Whoever 'does it best' wins a cool prize.

Example:

My every day carry consists of:

- Spyderco or Leatherman clipped to my pocket
- Keys
- Wallet
- Cell Phone
- Surefire or Streamlight Stylus light clipped to other pocket
- Glock 19

Those are items I ALWAYS have. I will be dressed for the weather (but not overly geared up) and will grab my PSK, my camera, and head out.

Again, this thread should be focused on practicing your skills and learning what works and doesn't work. I don't want anyone to get upset because they didn't win a prize or thinks somebody else did something unfair. I will attempt to keep my judging as unbiased as possible and stick to the basics.

Good luck and any questions....just ask!!

TFin,

I have a couple items I'd like to add to your give-away.

In order to stick with your idea of not giving away the secret, I'll not tell what they are. As a teaser I can tell everyone that the items I'm throwing in are not like anything I've seen here on W&SS.

I think you have my e-mail address but if not its Rupestris@gmail.com .

drop me a line and I'll arange getting them to you.

Chris

Ok this sounds pretty fun. I like a challenge! I live very close to a nice wooded area that may just be perfect to test out some skills.

Cool, count me in .

My EDC consists of my Large Sebenza 21, my leatherman, my "texas match," my SAK classic (for the toothpic of course), my caribeaner with keys, wallet, blackberry pearl (also my camera). My PSK will be an altoid tin with a few goodies in it.

Does a bottle or a metal cup count in this? I'm sure we will be getting kind of thirsty out there and it can be kind of frustrating having to boil water over and over again in an altoid tin :o

As an add on, this is perfect for me since I have a weekend hog hunting trip coming up in two weeks with my friend. I'll just use my PSK for one of those days and be sure to take pics :D

Awesome! Thanks for the moderate time frame, as this will give me a chance to hopefully participate.

Awesome Chris, maybe this will give us a chance to have a 2nd and 3rd place winner as well. That would be cool. I'm emailing you now.

Does a metal cup come with you every day, or part of your PSK?

Just a hint- Some heavy tooling foil can be folded into a PSK then folded into a container and placed on a fire to hold and boil water.

Good point, and thanks for the tip

Is anybody building a kit for this challenge or adjusting their current kit? Like my other thread on PSK's said, I never really got on the bandwagon. I am trying to create an inexpensive but useful kit so I can participate too. I've got an outline of items and most of it stocked, just working on gathering a few odds and ends and it will be complete. I think you guys will like it!

Well I pretty much always have my nalgene with me when I go out and I have purification tablets in my PSk, so that will prevent you from having to boil water. Nice and Simple!

thinking about the parameters here and have a question or two...

i was thinking i would do a sort of scenario based situation where i bring what i might for a quick dayhike, and then end up somehow unable to leave until the next day. in this case, i would normally be carrying a small amount of food (a sandwhich or some granola bars) and a bottle of water or two. would it be allowed for me to carry these with me, or is the whole point of this to really have to rely solely on the items in the psk?

i'm thinking i might forgo the food and water, to solely test what i would have on me for a quick unplanned jaunt through the woods, but just wondering anyways.

I really don't want to get into specifics, that takes the fun out of it. I think in the spirit of the challenge it would be best to go with just the basic kit but nobody will be 'disqualified' for having a bottle of water with them.

That said, my kit contains a power bar and an electrolyte drink mix. Water will be obtained and purified on site though. There is an area near me with hickory nuts and other items to snack on, and in reality, 24 hours with just some water to drink is just fine. I've done worse before.

By all means guys, don't put yourself behind the curve just for this contest. Go to a well known area with a known water source and easy way out.

If I get any warm days I might try and do this, it's pretty cold around here now, though.

Weather is getting a bit warmer in the midwest toward the end of the week, might be a good day to get out.

does it have to a hiking PSK or can it be a vehicle PSK? I drive a lot, hundreds of KM's down old logging road here in BC......

Again, nothing is disqualified but this is based on the idea of a hiking/bushcraft PSK.

My truck "PSK" (or get home bag if that's what you want to call it) holds about twice the gear I normally take with me in the woods. It wouldn't be a challenge at all.

I don't want to put limitations on size that it has to fit in a box that is X by X by X or anything like that, but the idea is a altoids tin, camera case, small pelican case, etc sized kits.
