Official PSK Challenege - With Giveaway!!

Have a lot of guys talking about it hopefully we'll have some pics up soon.

I'm going out myself just haven't found the time yet.

I received some neat trinkets for 2nd place prizes from one of our members here. I will get some teaser pics up soon just been busy.

Guys can I get a headcount of who plans to participate? I expected a larger interest.

I know it's getting cold out, what if we expand the options a bit? Your PSK and a sleeping bag or heavy blanket maybe? Minimalist gear should still be the focus, but you can bring what you want to stay warm.

I have some really good items to give away, maybe if I spilled the beans on it people would have the motivation to get out and do this. That is what I was trying to avoid, is people just posting some pics to win a prize.

Your thoughts?

I'm still planning on it! I'll have to do it after next weekend though, as I still can't get out, but I've got something all next weekend. I just got my beeswax, and my wife is going to dig out the jute so I can revamp my firekit.

I plan on not taking a sleeping bag or a blanket, but using a space blanket, since I've usually always got one if I'm out since they are so small. I'm looking forward to testing it out to see how it works, along with my other minimals.

So, Count me in!

My greediness says don't post pics so the few who do participate can win! :D But I do think posting pictures of the prizes will get people more interested. If the prize is a $400 Busse, then you'll have a lot jumping in. But if it is a single PJCB, then I'd probably still do it. :D

PERFECT! You are exactly who this challenge is for. Good for you dude. Teaser pic coming up soon...

i'm in. if all does well (and it looks like it will) i will be able to get out over night this weekend. looking forward to seeing how comfortable i can make myself with the below freezing temps we have been having all week (and its supposed to drop even more by the weekend!)

can't wait to get out. still looking around for the tripod so i can take some video...

The added blanket is good, I don't want to freeze to death out there. I think hot rocks under some dirt will be the way to go, and a really good shelter.
Weather has been crappy, checking long term forecast every day.

I want to give this a try, but I have to find a good spot for it first. I don't have much experience with the trails here in Nor Cal; I need to find one on which I could do an overnighter and make a fire without breaking any rules/laws. Don't count me in; but if I do it in time, I'll just post pics and thoughts anyway...it'll be from the perspective of someone new to survival skills. Besides I don't think the balmy california weather could compare with siguy's sub-freezing connecticut weather :D

edit: and yes, I realize since I lack extensive experience, I'll be double sure to ensure my safety should anything go wrong (backup plans and notifying others, accessible location, etc)

rksoon, it all depends on where your kit will be used....i build my kit based on the fact that it gets pretty cold around here, and your kit could be built to reflect that it stays warmer there...

you already caught my suggestion of having a backup plan in place. i like to think of myself as fairly experienced, but i will be taking some precautions myself. things can always go wrong, that's why we carry PSKs. stay safe everyone

Right; I look forward to seeing/reading about your experience:thumbup: :)

Ditto and have fun guys

Sign me up for this. I'll be trying to get into the woods as soon as I can. I'm a bit busy over the next couple of weekends so if we could get a final submission date then that would be great. Gives me a deadline to work to, might even have to use a sick day.

The weather here isn't great but hell I could do overnights in the woods with just a knife in the summer so this is a better challenge.

I'm thinking i'll probably wear a pair of trail trainers rather than boots, a pair of combat pants and a lifa top with a Montane jacket over that. I might pack a hat if it's raining when I leave the house.

Everyday kit wise i'm thinking a Busse CG FBM and my Koster Bushcraft (yes I do carry these 2 on most day trips, gotta love the big blades). I'll have a 500ml bottle of water, 3 or 4 flapjacks and a big of mixed nuts and raisins with me.

PSK will be a tin a bit bigger than an Altoid tin, probably have a lighter, candle, some cordage, a soup sachet and some other bits and pieces.

Looking forward to this now:thumbup:

I'm going hunting this weekend after all!!!

Looks like I'll get to put in a few good shots of my kit and my Sebenza

I'm just curious as to the rules - is this 'use whatever you'd normally bring on a dayhike' or is this 'you were walking down a city street, and are now gonna have to survive with what was on you' ?

Me too, at first I thought it was something more along the lines of an altoid psk, then it kind of turned into a day hike pack. I figured it would've been more interesting if it would have stuck to a "normal" edc such as a knife, multi-tool, firestarter, and perhaps a flashlight, anything else would be going out on a limb.

I also thought something small and simple such as an altoid psk would have sufficed in any type of weather. I'm assuming we're all going to dress for the weather and then take our psk's out for a day and take pictures of everything. So if it's cold, you'll have winter clothes on, if it's hot then shorts/jeans and a t-shirt, etc...

but I don't know for certain so hopefully the OP chimes in.
